We hope the recent Powerball jackpot brought some fun
and excitement to your location. I think we all enjoyed
getting our minds off the blistering cold weather as the
jackpot grew. It’s the highest jackpot seen in the U.S. since
2013, and it reached $564.1 million before the jackpot was hit by lucky ticket
holders in North Carolina, Texas and Puerto Rico.
Ohio Lottery retailers shared almost $2.2 million in bonuses and commissions
during that jackpot run, which stretched from Dec. 3 to Feb. 11. The Ohio
Lottery secured a number of big winners on Feb. 11, including three $1-million
prizes sold at stores in Springfield, Columbus and Carroll. Growing jackpots
provide a great opportunity for retailers to make a good impression with customers
and boost their in-store sales.
We have a challenge for you. The $30 instant games are doing well and we’d
like that to continue. Next month, we’re offering an incentive for retailers who sell
a book of 40th Anniversary Millions and a book of $500 Million Spectacular…or
more. Get the details on page 3. With a $1.65 commission for each ticket sold,
it makes sense for retailers with customers who enjoy higher-priced instant games
to prepare for the promotion and make the most of it.

Getting credit for online adjustments
When a draw game ticket doesn’t print correctly from your terminal,
what do you do?
Immediately take a reprint for a ticket jam or missing ticket.
Take the necessary steps to help your customer. Then, call the Ohio Lottery
Customer Call Center at 1-800-686-4208. Press #1 for the agent menu, and
then #2 for call center. By calling the Customer Call Center during normal
business hours, or the Intralot Call Center at 1-866-710-2462 on nights or
weekends, we can assist you in getting proper credit.
There are a few quick details we need in writing, on a retailer requested online
adjustment form. These forms can be conveniently downloaded at http://www.
ohiolottery.com/Retailers.

Be prepared before a problem occurs by discussing the adjustment process with your sales representative, who can provide you

malfunction occurs. Write down the date, time and the name of the
representative who worked with you. Late requests may be denied.

As the third highest Powerball jackpot ever, the drawing held Feb.
11 captured a great deal of attention throughout Ohio and the U.S.
Ohio enjoyed three $1-million winners and Ohio Lottery retailers

Hard work, friendliness and a knack for numbers have
put Harper’s Point Shell, located in Cincinnati’s Sycamore
Township, on the map as a favored destination for Ohio
Lottery players.
A plan of action makes Harper’s Point Shell a
standout retailer. Store owner Peter Patel is known
for keeping close watch on his Lottery financials. He sets
monthly goals and works with staff to achieve them. Left to

Nilesha Patel and her husband
Peter Patel have made
great strides to improve their
business, which they purchased
in 2009. One of their biggest
projects was to rebuild and
expand the convenient store.
As a result, in the last three
years ticket sales have increased
80%.
“They are just awesome
with customers,” says sales
representative Mike Grause.
“Peter’s turned that store
around.”
Peter made a point of seeing
what other Lottery retailers in
his community were doing.
He found retailers with empty
instant ticket boxes, some of
whom took little time with
Lottery customers. He used
that to his advantage.
“I gave it (Lottery) the priority
and customers a place to play,”
he says.
Nilesha works the morning shift,
and Peter works in the afternoon,
and they have three employees
who assist. They find that
especially helpful during the lunch
hour and evening rush. Everyone
is trained to sell and cash
Lottery games. There are two
separate lines – one for Lottery,
and the second for other store
merchandise.
Keys to success
• Prominently display winners. “He’s papering
big winners all around the store,” says sales
representative Mike Grause.
• Give customers what they want. Peter Patel
took time to learn the interests of his customers,
whether they play in local work pools or live in
the neighborhood.
• Work closely with employees and Lottery sales
representative. To make sure their operation
runs smoothly, the Patels share their sales goals
with employees, and everyone helps out when
flexibility in schedules is needed.
• Peter says Mike Grause “gives me same day

Mike, including the store’s
commissions. “Peter sets a
monthly goal and asks his staff for
help to achieve it.”
Peter also knows the importance
of cashing – and it doesn’t matter
whether or not the winning
purchase was made at his store.
He’s heard from customers who’ve
purchased tickets elsewhere.
Sometimes they’ve gone back
once, twice, even three times to
cash. After being refused multiple
times, he says “they never go
back to that store. They lose their
patience.”
As to those other retailers, he
says, “They don’t realize the
opportunity they’re missing.”
