Everyone had a terrific time being healthy while having fun. I hope everyone will have a relaxing and fun Spring Break. It will give all of us time to recharge our batteries as we prepare for our last quarter of the school year. The students have all worked very hard to develop and perfect their technical writing skills in preparation for this important State Assessment. Kindergarten Round Up HEAD START APPLICATIONS 2015-2016 The School Board of Broward County Head Start and Early Head Start Departments will be accepting applications for the preschool programs for three and four year old children for the 20132014 school year. Applications will be accepted during the weeks of March 2-March 14, 2015 and April 6-18, 2015 Quiet Waters Elementary School will hold a Kindergarten Orientation on Friday, March 13 at 8:30 am for children who will be entering Kindergarten in August. All children must be five years old on or before September 1, 2015 and reside in the Quiet Waters Elementary School boundaries The Orientation will be held in the school cafeteria. It will include a presentation by our staff describing the kindergarten program and then a visit to a kindergarten classroom. Parents may pick up a registration packet on this morning or may stop by the front office and begin registration beginning on Monday, March 30 between 8:00 am through 11:00 am and continue through the summer until school begins on August 24, 2015. After bringing home a First Place technical Award and receiving a bid for the state competitions at the South Florida Regionals at McNicole Middle School on Saturday, January 31, our EGGHEAD Robotics Team are headed for the state competition. State competition will be held on March 8 in Orlando at the University of Central Florida campus. The Robotics Lego League is an international competition for elementary and middle school students. Each year the contest focuses on a different real-‐world topic related to the sciences. The team's robot has been designed, built, and programmed to score points in 2.5-‐minute matches on a themed playing field. Students also learn that "Gracious Professionalism", friendly competition, and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork. Extended Day Opportunity For All Students in Grades 3-‐5 We are pleased to announce that Quiet Waters Elementary School will offer a series of test taking workshops for all students in third, fourth, and fifth grade with the student’s classroom teacher. These after-‐school sessions will emphasize specific strategies to increase student’s overall math and reading scores. Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) PTA hosted our First Boosterthon FUN RUN at QWE on Thursday, February 19. Everyone had a great time! Quiet Waters Elementary students, grades 3 -‐5, (and their siblings) have been invited to participate in the 4th Annual Earth Day Open House at Monarch Hill Renewable Energy Park on Saturday, April 11 from 12 noon to 4 pm. Waste Management has invited ten schools to participate in the free event featuring environmental displays, bus tours of Monarch Hill landfill and the landfill gas-‐to-‐energy plant, free hot dogs and refreshments, and other activities. The District will be administering the CogAT assessment to all 2nd grade students on Monday, March 16, Tuesday, March 18, and Wednesday, March 18, 2014. The purpose of the CogAT is to assess the level and pattern of cognitive development of students and pre-screen all children for eligibility for gifted services. Furthermore, this assessment will provide valuable information regarding students’ learning strengths and styles that will allow teachers to improve differentiated instruction and student achievement. BCCTM Math Competition This year will be the 35th Annual BCCTM Mathematics Competition on Saturday, March 7. Ninety-‐three Elementary Schools including charters, private and Broward schools will compete on Saturday, March 8th at Coral Glades High School. In some instances, students who have been previously retained, students who are disabled, and students who have limited English proficiency may be promoted if they meet certain requirements.
