Region/State A6 State GRASS FIRE FORT CALHOUN — A man, his neighbors and firefighters have stopped flames from reaching the man’s home and others northwest of Fort Calhoun in eastern Nebraska. Val Goodman says his lawnmower burst into flames on Sunday, touching off the blaze. He called 911 and then used his garden hose to keep the blaze at bay. Neighbors soon joined him, and then firefighters arrived at the scene. The wind-whipped flames charred an estimated 30 to 40 acres, and a shed containing two classic cars was destroyed. HASTINGS TRIBUNE Monday, March 16, 2015 Firm proposes adding space to jail 10 staff evacuated The Associated Press LINCOLN — A Lincoln architectural firm has proposed adding more than 17,000 square feet to an old county jail it’s renovating, to the tune of up to $4 million. The Public Building Commission is renovating the old Lancaster County jail, located in Lincoln. Once a new entryway for inmates heading to court is completed by mid-June, crews will start demolition work on the building’s interior, the Lincoln Journal Star reported. The plan is to house various county departments inside, including adult probation, community corrections and the county attorney’s child support division. Eventually, all of the county attorney’s office will be in the building. Demolition inside the building is set to be complete by January. Construction of the new interior is expected to be done by late 2016. Architect Greg Newport said his firm has found a way to add floor space to the building’s third floor — now composed of holding cells around an area open to the floor below — by constructing a concrete and steel deck to close the open space. The move would increase the building’s interior space from 26,700 square feet to nearly 44,000 square feet. The new square footage could provide space to house the county’s juvenile probation office, Newport said. Maryland: Man makes license plate pilgrimage to Ohiowa Continued from page A5 Roit is retired from the postmaster position, as it was eliminated. The Ohiowa post office currently is served by area clerks. McCoy said he was thrilled to be in Ohiowa Saturday. “Ever since I was a child, I have always loved history, especially local history,” he said. “The smaller the town, the more fascinating.” In 1998, McCoy founded the Silver Spring Historical Society, which serves the city’s 80,000 residents. He is president of the organization. McCoy also been a specialcollection librarian for the Washington, D.C., Public Library since 2000. He works with the Washingtoniana Collection on the local history of the District of Columbia. McCoy beamed as he spoke of the joy he feels for his job. “I can’t believe I get paid for what I do,” he said. While his Maryland Ohiowa license plate adorns his auto- mobile, McCoy said, the Nebraska Ohiowa and Iowa Ohiowa ones will go back on the wall when he gets home. McCoy said he also has license plates of the states from the years he and his wife were born. McCoy plans to continue his quest for more Ohiowa license plates. “I keep looking all the time. It is my fantasy to find someone in Ohio who has Ohiowa plates.” amid Ebola scare CLARENCE ROY-MACAULAY AND ROBBIE COREY-BOULET The Associated Press FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — Ten health care workers with a Boston-based nonprofit organization responding to Sierra Leone’s Ebola outbreak are to be evacuated to the United States after one of their colleagues was infected with the deadly disease. Partners in Health said in a statement Saturday that the 10, the largest group to be evacuated to the United States over possible Ebola exposure, would travel on non-commercial aircraft and be isolated in Ebola treatment facilities. Four of the 10 health care workers arrived at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, spokesman Taylor Wilson said Sunday. None of them were sick, but if they do develop Ebola they will be treated in the hospital’s specialized biocontainment unit. The others will be monitored at U.S. hospitals with experience treating the disease in Atlanta and in Bethesda, Maryland. On March 11, a Partners in Health medical worker in Sierra Leone tested positive for Ebola, and the 10 fellow workers “came to the aid of their ailing colleague,” the organization’s statement said. The 10 have not shown signs of Ebola and Partners in Health said the evacuations were ordered “out of an abundance of caution.” “They will remain in isolation near designated U.S. Ebola treatment facilities to ensure access to rapid testing and treatment in the unlikely instance that any become symptomatic,” the group’s statement said. The Partners in Health staffer who became infected has already been evacuated and is receiving treatment at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Partners in Health did not specify a timeline for the remaining evacuations and a representative of the U.S. Embassy in Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital, referred questions to Partners in Health and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Partners in Health began treating Ebola patients in Liberia and Sierra Leone last November, and the health care worker who tested positive for Ebola on March 11 is the first staff member to fall ill “as a result of a confirmed occupational exposure,” the group said.
