Cultivating Resilience: The Practice of
Flourishing in Any Circumstance
March 20, 2015
Conference Overview
Modern life presents us with a myriad of
challenges... a constant state of change, increasing
use of technology and multiple demands on our
time and resources to name but a few. What if it was
possible to flourish in any circumstance? It is! The
key is to cultivate resilience within. This conference
invites you to open to this possibility and offers tools
and support for your journey. The experiential lunch
offers additional opportunities to begin or enhance
your personal resilience path (by connecting with
others and participating in self-care activities). Let
this day inspire you to create a plan to build capacity,
cultivate resilience and experience more joy and
equanimity in your life.

Renewing the Heart of Nursing: Sustaining
Resiliency in Caring Practice
Keynote Speaker: A. Lynne Wagner,

Educator facilitating the development of
mentor programs, presenting workshops
on Caring Science and serves as Faculty
Associate at the Watson Caring Science
Institute. She is a published poet who
uses poetry, photography and other

heart-centered techniques in her
research, presentations and journal publications. The resiliency
needed by all nurses to develop and sustain a holistic caring
practice requires nurses to reflect on why they came to
nursing and why they stay. Her multimedia presentation will
address the application of Caring Science to holistic nursing
practice, the renewal of heart-centered care through
compassionate self-care practices, and the possibilities for
healing personal and institutional cultures and systems.
One Destination: Many Paths
Peggy Mangan, RN is a cancer survivor and model of
resilience. Her evidenced-based and time-tested techniques
can benefit each of us as no one is exempt from major life
challenges. You will hear Peggy’s miraculous story and walk
away with methods to deepen your own resilience.
Healing Conversations with a Tree: A Year’s Journey
Through Grief
A. Lynne Wagner, EdD, RN, MSN. Nurses who attend to their
own healing are more resilient and creative in their daily caring
for others who are experiencing loss and grief. We learn from
each other’s stories about coping with painful human
experiences, such as grieving the loss of a loved one. This
aesthetic presentation is a nurse’s story about her year-long
journey with grief, told through personal voice, poetry,
photography, music, and reflective conversations with a tree
and self. This story serves as an example of how reflective
practice and giving voice to personal journeys build resiliency.
A Trio of Take-Home Resilience Tools
Kathleen Neuman, MSN, RN, HSMI has been a psychiatric
nurse since 1972 and is an adjunct Assistant Nursing Professor
at Madonna University. She is a certified Laughter Yoga® leader
and Holistic Stress Management instructor. Kathy will close
the day with easily accessed resilience tools to take home.
We’ll learn quick and practical ways to practice resilience on
the go, incorporating gratitude, mindfulness and perspective.
And we’ll have a bit of fun with it too!
