UConn Extension Presents For the Birds…The Story of Great Gull Island Dr. Juliana Barrett and Joel Stocker UConn Extension Thursday, April 2, 2015 11:00 a.m. -‐ 12:30 p.m., ATL 109 On Thursday, April 2nd Dr. Juliana Barre7 and Joel Stocker will be presen?ng their work “For the Birds…The Story of Great Gull Island.” Great Gull Island (GGI) is a 17-‐acre island between Block Island and Long Island Sounds. As one of the most important nes?ng habitats for roseate terns and common terns in the western hemisphere, it is cri?cal to maintain and improve the nes?ng habitats on GGI. Helen Hays, Director of the Great Gull Island Project, and others have worked to restore the nes?ng tern colonies at this site. They have been collec?ng data since 1969 and have tried various techniques to improve the nes?ng habitat for the birds. Currently however, invasive and nuisance plants are overtaking much of the Island which is impac?ng the nes?ng habitat of the birds. UConn’s CT Sea Grant and Extension are partnering with the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), the USFWS, UConn Department of Ecology and Evolu?onary Biology, University of Rhode Island, Massachuse7s Audubon, and EPA’s Long Island Sound Study to determine habitat management to improve the nes?ng habitat for the birds.
