Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation manages 96 parks and trails on over 4,171 acres of land. In addition to the urban parks of all sizes, there are many acres held in reserve for future park expansion and flood control. The full service park season for the availability of restrooms, drinking fountains, pavilion rental and general day-to-day operating conveniences is April 18-October 11, 2015. TRAILS Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation maintains a variety of hard surface and crushed limestone recreational trails. The Cedar River Trail and Cedar Lake Loop Trail are hard surface and are kept open throughout the year. The crushed limestone trails are not cleared in the winter. If you make a complete tour of all the park trails, you will travel over 24 miles. Cherokee Trail This 1 mile trail is located off Johnson Avenue between Edgewood Road and Wiley Boulevard NW. Parking is along Midway Drive on the trail’s north side. A meandering path lined with bur oak trees makes this one of our most popular crushed limestone trails. Cherry Hill Trail This crushed limestone trail is .825 miles long. It is located on the west end of Cherry Hill Park on the City’s NW side. Ample parking exists off Stoney Point Road. A playground, two softball fields and the Cherry Hill Park pavilion are adjacent to the trail. Noelridge Park Trail One of the oldest trails in the park system, this popular trail is located in Noelridge Park on the City’s NE side. The trail is .8 miles long. This crushed limestone trail is best accessed off Council Street between Collins Road and 42nd Street NE. Nixon Park Trail A .75 mile crushed limestone trail with very little grade change awaits users. The trail runs through Nixon Park and around Nixon School near Hiawatha on the City’s NE side. Prairie Park Fishery Trail This 1.7 mile hard surface trail loops around the 65 acre lake offering excellent views for hikers, walkers, bicyclists, and bird watchers. Prairie Park Fishery is located at 2125 Otis Road SE. It is open year-round, seven days per week from 6:00am-dusk (½ hour after sunset) when the gates are locked. Sac and Fox Trail This is the oldest National Recreation Trail in Iowa. It is 7.2 miles in length and is crushed limestone. The trail follows the Cedar River and Indian Creek on the SE side of Cedar Rapids. There are numerous access points along the trail and abundant parking areas, especially south of Mount Vernon Road. Cedar River Trail This all-weather trail extends from Blairs Ferry Road NE through downtown Cedar Rapids to 76th Avenue SW where it becomes the Hoover Trail. The Cedar River Trail is 12.6 miles long and is 10 feet wide. Native grasses and wildflowers have been established along sections of the trail and offer vivid floral displays of native Iowa prairie. Parking for the Cedar River Trail is located at Tait Cummins Park on C Street SW, Werner Avenue, and McLoud Run Place on the NE side of Cedar Rapids. Please keep bicycle and roller blade speeds to a reasonable level and practice good trail etiquette. Cedar Lake Loop Trail Parking for the 1.6 mile loop trail is located on Shaver Road NE, south of Interstate 380 at H Avenue NE. Three shelters with picnic tables, many new benches and bicycle racks await trail users. Visit www.linncountytrails.org for trail maps. Call Bill Snyder at (319) 378-3141. 43 PARKS / SERVICES 44 OFF-LEASH DOG PARKS OLD MACDONALD’S FARM The City has two off-leash areas for dog owners and their pets to enjoy. Owners are required to clean up after their dogs in all parts of the parks. Bags are available. Owners are also expected to familiarize themselves with park rules and etiquette posted on the park kiosk and available at www. k9cola.org. City ordinance requires dogs to be leashed until entering the off-leash area. Old MacDonald’s Farm, Bever Park’s Children’s Zoo, is operated by Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation. Located on the SE side of Cedar Rapids, it is a free public zoo and features farm animals and North American waterfowl. (The baby animals, possibly piglets and ducklings, are only out when the weather is warm.) This city landmark is over 100 years old and is enjoyed by people of all ages. Cheyenne Off-Leash Dog Park Located on Cedar Bend Lane SW, off Old River Road, it consists of 13.8 acres of fenced canine recreation yards (main yard, training yard, small dog yard), benches and a shelter. Water is available for owners and dogs. A portable restroom is located near the entrance. OPEN DAILY: April 25 - October 4 10am-7pm K9 Acres Off-Leash Area Located at Squaw Creek Park, it is an 11 acre facility with a small dog yard, training yard, dog water station, walking trail and benches. OFF-LEASH DOG AREA PERMITS Permits are required to use the off-leash dog areas. Season passes may be purchased at Animal Control 900 76th Avenue Drive SW Phone: (319) 286-5993 Daily Passes (for those who want to try the park or are just in the area for a short time) may be purchased at the park just inside the entry gate. Simply fill out an envelope, put the $6 fee inside, and deposit the envelope in the slot of the green honor box. The Schuknecht Waterfowl Exhibit closes at 6:30pm. Some exhibits may close 15 to 20 minutes early due to variations in feeding schedules. PRAIRIE PARK FISHERY Fishing, ice fishing, picnicking, scuba diving, paddle sports and geocaching are some of the activities that Prairie Park Fishery provides. The park is ADA accessible and includes a 1.7 mile hard surface trail loop around the 65 acre lake offering excellent views for hikers, walkers, bicyclists and bird watchers. The park is open yearround, seven days per week, from 6am to 10pm. Fishing licenses are available through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. More information is available at www.crrec.org. Trout Derby Fishermen of all ages are invited to come try their skill (luck) at the 5th annual Trout Derby at Prairie Park Fishery. A total of 2000 trout will be released with 200 tagged. Anyone who catches a tagged trout may turn it in for a prize during the event. A valid fishing license and trout stamp are required.
