This wide selection includes local Wisconsin brandies, classic French and California brandies, and even exotic Chilean and Croatian brandies. Enjoy a flight and experience the variety the world of brandies has to offer. The unique characteristic of each of these brandies is due to several factors. All brandies are made from fruits, and the type of grapes or fruit that are used will affect the base flavors of the spirits. Depending on the method and quality control of distillation the resulting spirit can be smooth and light or intense and sharp. When brandies are aged in charred-oak barrels they will develop a rich, caramel color and pick up sweet, smooth notes; whereas, un-aged brandies will express the piercing essence of the fruit. Humans have been distilling wine into a spirit since at least the 13th Century. The style of Brandy that we are familiar with today developed partly by mistake. It is thought that merchants distilled wine as a preservation method and as a way to reduce volume to ease transport and lessen taxation. This also explains the original Dutch name; Brandewijn or ‘Burnt Wine’ that the English transmuted to Brandy. The idea was to add back the water that had been removed, however it became apparent that the spirit (which had been transported in wooden barrels) had taken on a new and desirable character that no one wanted to alter. Thus, Brandy was born!
