Taizé Prayer
Join us Tuesday at 7:00 pm and Thursday night in Holy Week for Taize
Prayer. The format is sung evening prayer using the chants of the Taizé Ecumenical Community. After the evening psalm and the lighting of the candles the
reading of the day is proclaimed. This is followed by an extended period of silence. The prayer concludes with intercessory prayer and more songs.
Drama! Suspense! Music! Celebrate Easter at CTR!
The celebration begins with Palm Sunday and intensifies through Holy
Week. The Passion Drama on Palm Sunday, Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Good
Friday Service, the Easter Vigil on Saturday and the Sunday Easter Masses all
offer opportunities for us to celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord.
These liturgies involve many ministries and require numerous volunteers
with roles for both individuals and families. Please consider filling a role, whether new or returning. We are grateful for your gifts of time and talent.

The arrival of some Greeks who wish to see Jesus signals
the collapse of a barrier that separated Jew and Greek. This
was the hour Jesus had been waiting for; the ‘Hour” in the
Gospel of John is the cross. This is a transformational moment and thus it is not static: it’s not the grain of wheat, but
the grain of wheat that falls into the earth and dies. Without
this dynamic movement, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears
much fruit.” (John 12:20-24)
This is a threshold moment, like crossing a bridge. A bridge can separate or
unite. John O’Donohue explains, “The word threshold was related to the word
thresh, which was the separation of the grain from the husk or straw when oats
were flailed. It also includes the notions of entrance, crossing, border, and beginning.
To cross a threshold is to leave behind the husk and arrive at the grain."
In an interview with Krista Tippett, O’Donohue elaborated on this image,
“The threshold, in a way, is a place where you move into more critical and challenging and worthy fullness. And I think there are huge thresholds in every life.
I'd like to give a very simple example of it: you are in the middle of your life in
a busy evening, 50 things to do and you get a phone call that somebody you
love is suddenly dying. It takes 10 seconds to communicate that information,
but when you put the phone down, you are already standing in a different
world. Because suddenly everything that seems so important before is all gone
and now you are thinking of this. So the given world that we think is there and
the solid ground we are on is so tentative. And I think a threshold is a line
which separates two territories of spirit, and I think that very often how we
cross is the key thing.”
On Friday we crossed the “threshold” into Spring. We are on the cusp of
Holy Week, and the celebration of Easter– reminding ourselves of the spiritual
elements of suffering, death, and resurrection. John O’Donohue summarizes it
well:
“Like spring secretly at work within the heart of winter, below the surface
of our lives huge changes are in fermentation. We never suspect a thing. Then
when the grip of some long-enduring winter mentality begins to loosen, we find
ourselves vulnerable to a flourish of possibility and we are suddenly negotiating
the challenge of a threshold.”
“At any time you can ask yourself: At which threshold am I now standing?
At this time in my life, what am I leaving? Where am I about to enter? What is
preventing me from crossing my next threshold? What gift would enable me to
do it? A threshold is not a simple boundary; it is a frontier that divides two different territories, rhythms, and atmospheres. Indeed, it is a lovely testimony to
the fullness and integrity of an experience or a stage of life that it intensifies
toward the end into a real frontier that cannot be crossed without the heart
being passionately engaged and woken up. At this threshold a great complexity
of emotion comes alive: confusion, fear, excitement, sadness, hope. This is one
of the reasons such vital crossings were always clothed in ritual. It is wise in
your own life to be able to recognize and acknowledge the key thresholds; to
take your time; to feel all the varieties of presence that accrue there; to listen
inward with complete attention until you hear the inner voice calling you forward. The time has come to cross.” O’Donohue, To Bless the Space Between Us,
p. 48.

Grieving with Great HOPE is a
five week grief support series that offers a prayerful, practical and personal
approach for anyone who is mourning
the loss of a loved one. If you have
lost a spouse, a child (including pregnancy loss), a grandchild, parent, another family member or a friend, you
are encouraged to attend. Presenters
will be Fr. Joe Dailey, Fr. Mike Verschaeve as well as John and Sandy
O’Shaughnessy from Good Mourning
Ministry, a local Catholic bereavement
organization. This is a joint effort with
our parish and St. Joseph Parish. This
year, the sessions will be held here at

When is my child ready for the Sacrament of Reconciliation?
A quick story: My daughter Lauren was in fourth grade at the time and her
sister Audrey in second. One day I picked them up from school and Lauren was
enjoying a yummy candy bar. Audrey asked “Where did you get that?” Lauren
replied “From Joel.” Now, Joel happened to be Audrey’s best friend at the time
(the plot thickens). So Audrey, understandably, was very confused. She asked
Lauren with the deep pain of being jilted in her voice “So, Joel gave YOU a candy bar but didn’t send one for me? Why would he do that?” Lauren just
shrugged her shoulders and continued to enjoy her candy. Audrey was just devastated. Feeling snubbed, the big crocodile tears started to roll and Audrey cried
“I just don’t understand Momma, why would Joel give Lauren candy and not
me? Do you think he isn’t my best friend anymore?” I tried to comfort Audrey
“Oh honey, I’m sure you are still Joel’s best friend, maybe he only had one piece
of candy…etc, etc.”
Eventually we were driving in silence; I not knowing how to comfort Audrey
any further as she continued to whimper in confusion and Lauren being unusually quiet. As we pulled into the driveway, all of a sudden Lauren blurted out
“Mom, I need to tell you something! Joel actually gave me two pieces of candy,
one for me and one for Audrey….but I ate them both.” Audrey’s face first registered relief that Joel hadn’t forgotten her and then I had to diffuse the rightful
tirade of anger and indignation she wielded at her sister. After the dust settled
and apologies were made, Audrey left in a huff to go into the house and Lauren
and I stayed in the car to chat about what she thought her punishment for this
selfish act should be. Her response was classic. “Mom, I don’t care how you
punish me…I’m just glad I told you because I was soooo sweating!!!” It was at
that moment I knew Lauren was ready for the Sacrament of Reconciliation!
Our Catholic guidelines recommend that children should begin preparation
at the “age of discretion” (usually ages 7-9) when they can determine right from
wrong to the best of their ability with the right intentions. Parents are the best
judges for when the time is right (and, of course, are the primary Catechists of
what is morally right and wrong).

There is a helpful study by Harvard Professor Lawrence Kohlberg that identifies 6 stages of moral development. Opinions vary, but many think our Catholic “age of discretion” lands around stage 4 and hopefully will continue to grow
with the guidance of all of us – the faithful, the Church - into Stage 6. Though,
there are still adults stalled in stage 1 and some kids who have already arrived at
stage 6, so everyone is different.

Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants agree is of great importance. It is also a
concept that is the source of tremendous disagreement between Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants. Its theological development by theologians has led to
the creation of certain famous aspects of Christianity such as original sin and
predestination. Learn about the theological concept of grace and it is a vital
component in the Christian understanding of salvation.

Lent in Youth Ministry
I would love to invite all teens in grades
9-12 to join us Tuesdays from 7-9 pm during
Lent for a special series called, “Chase”. We
will be taking a closer look at some of the
“things” we’re chasing in our busy lives. It’s
so easy to become distracted and derailed
from our faith journey by events and objects
that seem to be value added but that actually
take us away from our relationship with
Christ. David was a man who chased after
the heart of God. Join us as we look at his
life and how, despite his short comings, God
was able to use him in remarkable ways. Our
last Lenten session is scheduled for March
24. What are you chasing?
Spring Break Mission 2015
Are you a student in grades 9-12 looking for
something new to do on Spring Break? Join us
as we journey to the Old Redford district in Detroit and work with the Motor City Blight Busters Wednesday April 8-Friday, April 10. We
begin each morning at CTR with a light breakfast and prayer before we carpool down to Lahser and Grand River. We never know exactly
what our tasks will be when we arrive, but it’s
always interesting. We may be doing anything
from clearing up parks of illegal dumping, cleaning empty lots, or taking down burned and
abandoned homes. If you like to meet new and
interesting people, swing a sledge hammer and
help others, then this is the experience for you.
We have scheduled an informational/
training meeting for Thursday, March 26
from 7-8 pm in Bethany. We leave CTR at
about 8:30 am and return each evening by 5:30

In this week’s Gospel message, Jesus is telling of his own
death. From the time we are small, a classic method to illustrate
Christ’s death and resurrection is the planting of seeds. As children in school, most of us have been given a small paper cup, a
couple scoops of dirt and a seed. We are told that when we plant
a seed, it must first “die” before it can bring forth new life. Maybe it goes back to the fact that I tend to kill every plant I’ve ever
had, but I’ve never quite understood this analogy. I think it’s
because I can’t quite grasp the need for the seed to “die”. If it
dies, it can’t possibly form the basis for new life, right?
I came across a story that better helped me to understand
this comparison.
“Forest fires swept through nearly half of Yellowstone National Park’s 2.2 million acres in the summer of 1988. At first, it
seemed life in the park could never be the same. The fire seemed
like a total disaster. But it wasn’t. Foresters pointed out that
lodge pole pine trees had cones on them that would only open
under intense heat – almost as though they were designed to respond to a forest fire. Yellowstone’s dry climate kept dead wood
from decaying quickly, so the ashes from the fire provided nutrients to the ground that could actually mean better growth for
years to come. No one at Yellowstone looks forward to forest
fires. But it is known that fires, however devastating they seem,
don’t mean the end of things. They bring about new beginnings.”
Jesus is like the cones from the lodge pole pine trees. Just as
they seem to be destined to respond to a forest fire and bring
new life, Jesus reminds us that it is in his death that God will be
glorified and new life can begin. Jesus tells us that, “It is for this
reason that I have come to this hour.” (John 12:27b) If Jesus
had not been willing to die as the Father planned, we would not
have life.
Any time we put another’s needs before our own, we are
following Christ’s example. Sometimes it takes heat and pressure, like in the forest fire, to bring us to the point where we are
able to blossom. Don’t be afraid to face the challenges in life.
It’s often during these trying times that God is helping us to
grow into something even better.

measures and signs of sexual abuse. All parents and caregivers are encouraged

parish are required to attend a training session of Protecting God’s Children. This workshop will inform and inspire participants to be part of the solution and to help keep our youth safe from harm.

Lent's austerity is interrupted on
March 25, as we keep a feast in honor
of the Annunciation. The Solemnity
of the Annunciation of the Lord
recalls when the angel Gabriel visits
the Virgin Mary. Mary has heard the
angel Gabriel's explanation of the
mystery; the will of God is made
known to her. Mary, the humble maid
of Nazareth, is to have the happiness
of becoming the mother of Jesus, the
son of God.
Through the marvel of Mary,
God shouts to us to wake up to the
marvelous creatures that we all are by
His design. The Annunciation is the
beginning of Jesus in His human nature. Through His mother, He is a
member of the human race.
Exactly nine months before
Christmas, the date signals the start of
God's plan of salvation. This feast day
is very important in the defense of the
life of unborn children. For those
with small children, this is a good time
to begin teaching about the value God
places on human life. He loved us so
much that he became one of us, and
became an innocent, completely dependent infant.
