St Mary’s Catholic Primary School
Celebrates One Hundred and Two Years
Newsletter—Week 8
To all in our School Community,
The Flemington Race Meeting on Saturday was
called, “Super Saturday.” And this best describes Saturday morning at St Mary’s, when over
thirty families gathered for our first Working Bee for 2015. Under the supervision of Anthony D’Amico and Phil Poursanidis, the focus was to rejuvenate the sandpit and re-establish the
Vegetable gardens, rehousing the boxes from beside the disused portable classrooms (this
building that has now become a useful storage facility) to the area by the new water tank,
where the old Foundation classrooms used to be. It was a very labour intensive few hours, as
sand, gravel and soil was shovelled, wheel barrowed and emptied. The outcome was a refreshed sandpit and garden beds that have been now professionally recreated with a plastic
base, gravel, hessian, soil, resident scarecrows, (courtesy of Isabel and Cooper Harris) and a
tested irrigation system. In expressing our appreciation to all who came and assisted, many
thanks to our “overseers,” Anthony and Phil, whose task orientated methodical approach to
the morning’s activities ensured all was achieved.
Super Saturday merged into Sunday, with many of our school community gathering for the
Year Five Family Mass at 10 30 a.m. With our school choir in wonderful voice, and our Year
Five children having prepared the difficult readings with diligence, the parishioners spontaneously showed their appreciation of the children’s participation at the conclusion of Mass.
Morning Tea followed with thanks to the parents.
And this week, schools in the Melbourne Archdiocese, celebrated Catholic Education Week,
an opportunity to celebrate and build community awareness about the strengths and distinctiveness of Catholic schools. In Victoria more than 200,000 children attend Catholic schools
and the Catholic system is growing faster than many other systemic schools (and our enrolments for Foundation 2016 are a testament to this fact). The focus of this special week for all
schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne was the St Patrick’s Day Mass at the much admired
majestic Cathedral. With Archbishop Hart being the main celebrant, the Mass begins with a
procession of school banners of those schools celebrating milestones leading the processions.
Representing St Mary’s at this Mass was our school student leaders of 2015. Accompanied by
Teresa Mercuri, the students were worthy ambassadors of our schools reflectively participating in the Mass and enjoying being an enthusiastic audience at the concert in the park that
followed.
Photo Day yesterday may have seemed a little chaotic, with the weather not being conducive
for photography (and it was not just the children who were worried about their hair), but we
all “survived.” Thank you to all who ensured the children were dressed in full summer school
uniform and were groomed for the occasion. And believe it or not, it was the boys this time
that had some interesting hair styles.
Today St Mary’s was amongst more than 1700 schools registered (over 800,000 students), to
participate in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. Co-ordinated by
Sandra Lind and organised by our student leaders, the day was noted for the variety of activities which focussed all of us on learning about what bullying actually is and what it is not and
how to implement appropriate strategies. The highlight was each class tying their ribbons on
the fence, under a Harmony sign. This was symbolic of the fact that even though we are all
different, we live in harmony by respecting and accepting individual differences.
Whilst the children at school were participating in activities to remind all of us about the effects of bullying, our Cross Country team was experiencing the challenge of long distance
running. Inspired by Andrew Hook, James Mitchell and a very supportive Parent Group all the
children strived to achieve their best with the team showing wonderful spirit in coming
fourth.
Enjoy the weekend.
My best wishes
Graham

LANGUAGES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY REVIEW
On Friday 13th March, 2015 I attended a workshop on Highly Effective Strategies for Teaching
Italian. The facilitator Viviana Golding has been a teacher of Languages for 27 years teaching
at all levels from Foundation to Tertiary. The workshop provided strategies, ideas and activities to motivate and engage students in the study of the Italian language. Italian remains the
fourth most studied language in the world today thanks to Italy’s unique culture, its history,
food, fashion, design and overall charm..
The workshop also provided teachers with the opportunity to reflect on the dynamics of their
own classroom teaching and how these routines, repackaging and revision of language can
facilitate their own teaching.
At the conclusion of the workshop teachers came away from the session with a wide and varied array of strategies and ideas that can be implemented in the Languages classroom.

GOOD LEADERS EAT LAST!
Religious Education Leaders meet once a
term to further develop their knowledge and
understanding of Catholic theology and contemporary theory and practice.
On Friday, March 13, I attended the Religious
Education Leaders Network Meeting at the
Treacy Conference Centre in Parkville where
we focused on what ‘good leadership’ actually
is or looks like, etc.
It behoves me to stress here that all teachers are leaders!
The Leadership Standards Framework (or LSF) clearly describes the complex role of leaders in
a Catholic school. The publication refers to ‘The Five Key Areas of Leadership Action’ and the
first of these, ‘Area 1 – The Faith Community’, informs us that:
The role of school leaders is to actively and collaboratively promote, maintain,
enhance and uphold:
1.
The Catholic identity of the school.
2.
An education in faith and opportunities for faith development.
3.
Processes for reflection, prayer and liturgical celebration.
4.
A commitment to social justice and action in the school and wider community.

2015 NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST
BULLYING AND VIOLENCE
ST MARY’S IS TAKING A STAND AGAINST BULLYING
AND VIOLENCE
Bounce Back
Week 8
Our school is one of over 1,600 schools across the country
taking part in the National Day of Action against Bullying
and Violence today, 20 March 2015.
The National Day of Action, now in its fifth year, is Australia's key anti-bullying event for schools.
The day provides the opportunity for schools like ours to
showcase how we are creating a safe and supportive
school community, free from bullying and violence.
The National Day of Action is a day where school communities across Australia, Take a Stand Together against bullying and violence. St Mary’s is dedicated to creating supportive school environments, free from bullying, harassment and violence. By working together at St Marys, we
are sending clear messages to young people that bullying
and violence, in or outside of school, is not okay - at any
time.
St Mary’s celebrated the National Day of Action Against
Bullying and Violence on Friday, 20 March by holding a
special assembly organised by our school leaders at 3.00
p.m. in the hall. The students also completed a display on
the newly erected fence adjacent Father Justin’s property,
which symbolises individual differences and our commitment to living in harmony.
The National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence is
a major activity organised by Bullying. No Way!
(www.bullyingnoway.gov.au). The Bullying. No Way! website, created by all Australian education jurisdictions, offers
practical resources and information to help schools work
together against bullying, harassment and violence.
Students and parents can also download the
free iPhone app Take a Stand <http://
itunes.apple.com/us/app/take-a-stand/

dealing with bullying close at hand.

This fortnight’s core
value :
RESPECT
Respecting the rights of
others and acknowledging your own rights and
responsibilities to others
in a respectful way.
Respecting other people
means treating others as
you want them to treat
you. It means you have
to stop and think about
the feelings and rights of
others. Respect involves
being polite and using
good manners, not insulting or hurting others, not
getting in the way of others when they are trying
to do something, looking
after shared property and
the property of theirs,
asking permission to use
things which belong to
someone else and speaking in a polite tone of
voice.
EDUCATION IN FAITH SPHERE
The contribution our Year Five children and School Choir to last Sunday’s Family
Mass was much appreciated.
A belated Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you all!
As you may know, most Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne send a representative group of students to this memorable
liturgy and concert each year.
7
EDUCATION IN FAITH SPHERE
This year, our Year Six Captains and Vice Captains were chosen to represent St. Mary’s at
the annual St. Patrick’s Day Mass for Schools and Concert for Schools. The Mass was
celebrated by Archbishop Denis Hart at St Patrick’s Cathedral and the concert took place in
the Treasury Gardens.
Who was St. Patrick?
St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. He
was born in Wales somewhere around AD 385. He was carried off by pirates and spent six
years in slavery before escaping and training as a missionary. He died on March 17 in AD
461 and this day has since been commemorated as St. Patrick’s Day.
Why is St. Patrick so important to us here in Australia?
The Irish people who migrated to Australia in search of
a better life were responsible for building the first
Catholic churches and schools here. St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a prime example of their legacy.
What is the national emblem of Ireland?
The national emblem of Ireland is the shamrock. St.
Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock (clover) to
teach people about the Trinity – the Father, Son and
Holy Spirit.
This week, our Social Justice Captains (Akot, Georgia, Isabella and Sara) visited
the classrooms for a second time to remind everyone about the importance of giving to people less fortunate than ourselves and to ask everyone to please return
all Project Compassion money boxes to the School Office.
Heartfelt thanks to the generous families who have already done so!
Kind Regards,
