HISTORY
Most area residents
know of families in
need due to illness or
unemployment.
Often times, those
families are forced to
decide between
buying medicine, making a housing
payment, or putting food on the table. For
the past 16 years, Bittersweet Plant-A-Row
Community Garden has provided thousands
of pounds of fresh, organically grown vegetables to Gleaners Community Food Bank
of Southeastern Michigan. Over the last
four years, Bittersweet Farm has expanded
its production, to over 3,200 lbs.
Today, these efforts have been spread to
the historic grounds of a newly acquired
piece of parkland, formerly owned by the
McCord family. The Clarkston Community
Garden is manned by community groups
and individuals. It provides an ideal
opportunity for local churches, families, and
neighborhood associations to help their
neighbors by gardening in one of the oldest
farms in the community. Garden
volunteers will benefit from the expertise of
Jim Tesnar, horticultural professional and
former marketing manager for ten years at
Bordine’s Nursery.
