Dear Parents We have had a remarkable first few weeks of 2015. I

Dear Parents
We have had a remarkable first few weeks of 2015. I have been delighted to
see the emergence of exciting new after-school activities this term, such as the
Scuba Diving course being held in partnership with Bedales, as well as the
Horse Riding club which has a massive waiting list, so popular has it proved.
We’ve also made encouraging changes to how we serve lunch to the children.
Whatever you are hearing from your own children about this, our interim
findings are that this is a vast improvement in the quality of experience for
children overall. Vice Principal Mrs West has been closely monitoring the food
availability and confirms that, contrary to some older students’ impressions,
there is now a full choice available right through the lunch period. The ‘Snack
Shack’ is also due to come on stream straight after half-term, which will further
improve choice and speed of service.
I have also been having very productive discussions with Governors about the
pressing need to radically improve our dining facilities. Fingers crossed that I
will have some pretty exciting news on that in March…
This half-term has been crowned by our amazing production of “Cats” at the
Kings Theatre, Southsea. I hope that many of you did get down to the Kings to
see it. The children performing were, indeed, sensational and drew fantastic
responses from family, friends and the general public, many of whom have
written to me, all commenting in the same fashion: “We didn’t even realise this
was a school production, so professional did it seem…”
We also had a great response from the primary school children who attended
the Thursday matinee. Speaking of primary schools, you may be interested to
hear that we have had record applications (307) for Y7 next year, which is
hugely encouraging.

BBC School Report
Practice News Day
On Tuesday 10 February 16 eager
journalists gathered in E3 to create some
newsworthy videos. If successful and if
they are downloaded in time, they will be
available from 4.20 for the whole country
to see on the BBC CBBC news Tuesday.
The eager young journalists spent the
day writing and presenting interesting
topical stories that deserve to be heard.
Being in BBC School Report gives the
participants the opportunity to improve
their writing and presenting skills.
Charlotte Avery said, ‘It gives us the confidence to present stories that mean something to
us, and share the views and opinions of our students and teachers.’ A year 8 student,
Jasmine who took part in the event said ‘I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.’
Harry Geeves and Phoebe Stone acted as confident, amazing presenters! They showed
great skill and wowed everyone with their articulate and breezy speaking voices.
The big breaking news story of the TPS day was the Maths Magician! Toby and Archie
worked on this story and interviewed Ms Colenso and the magician himself.
The results can be viewed on the BBC News Report website and the school website.
The day has been great fun and we all enjoyed it. We are looking forward to the real
School News Report Day on
Thursday 19 March 2015.
Charlotte took a collage of
pictures of the day which you
will be able to see on the
website. If you want to take
part, come to the BBC News
after school club which I run
every Friday in E3.

Shoe Box Challenge—Y8J
Miss Sharipo’s tutor group – 8J – wanted to
get involved with a Christmas charity, and so
got in touch with an orphanage called “Vita”, which is located in Riga, Latvia.
There are 60 children who have either lost their parents, or were taken away from their
parents by social services. The students decorated shoe boxes, put presents in and
wrote cards to wish the children Merry Christmas.
The boxes were shipped and during the Christmas holiday, Miss Sharipo went to the
orphanage herself to give out the boxes, read the cards and talk to the children.
Miss Sharipo said, “The
children’s reaction was really
positive, and they were
absolutely delighted to get
the attention and hear stories
about how children in
England live and what they
do. In fact, we want to make
a Skype conference call
between our tutor group and
the orphanage, which we will
be organising soon!”
TPS Art Work sent to the
Saatchi Gallery
Once again our young artists at TPS
have been excelling themselves by
producing artwork of the highest
quality.
Each year the internationally
recognised Saatchi Gallery in London
stages its prestigious Saatchi Gallery
Schools Prize.
We have selected entries from current
TPS students and those who
graduated last year to be entered into
this competition and as a result have
their work displayed on the Saatchi
Gallery TPS profile page.
This is a huge competition that puts
the work of our students firmly in the
spotlight on a world stage.
Well known critics from the art world
will judge the entries and the top 20
pieces will be selected to go on
display in the Saatchi Gallery London.
This year we have
extremely high hopes of
achieving this goal.
So, fingers crossed and
well done to everyone
who put such a huge
effort into developing
their skills in the Visual
Arts Department. Thank
you for creating such
stunning creative work
that keeps us all
captivated and
congratulations to those
who have been
selected.

Head of Visual Arts
Poetry Live
On 29 January, the English Department took 50 Year 10
and Year 11 students to Poetry Live! in Reading
accompanied by Miss Allen, Miss Sanders and Mrs Bloor.
The beautiful and ornate town hall was our backdrop to
listen to some of the best poets in the world read and
discuss their poems, whilst taking the time to answer any
questions the students had.
Kicking off the event was Simon Armitage, who shared
his love of poetry and inspiration through humorous
anecdotes and then shared some new poetry he had
just written with us. Following on was Imtiaz Dharker,
who brought us tales from her heritage in India and
discussed the impact of moving to the UK. After a
quick break, we then heard from the Poet Laureate
Carol Ann Duffy, who shared the stage with close
friend and poet, Gillian Clarke; both shared
inspirational poems influenced by the emotions felt
through life experiences. Lastly was John Agard,
who was hilarious from start to finish, and an
excellent way to end such a fantastic day.
Interspersed throughout the day was an opportunity
for the students to be given an invaluable insight into
what examiners are looking for in the poetry section
of the exam, as chief examiner, Tony Childs, gave
key guidance and advice on how to tackle the
Unseen Poetry section.
The students really enjoyed listening to the poets
and having their questions answered and they were
a credit to the school. An excellent day had by all!

EPQ Team Win the Final
Recently our Year 10 Gifted and Talented students participated in a competition run
by Alton College against other local schools. The competition was a taster of the
EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) which is completed at sixth form college
alongside academic studies. The EPQ is an opportunity to study a topic you are
interested in and present your findings and analysis to an audience.
The chosen topic for this year’s competition was ‘The Biggest Global Threat’ and
several teams at TPS competed in a semi-final here at school. Our semi-final winning
team, consisting of Rosella Cottam, Zoe King, Isobel Jones and Poppy Cain, went to
the final at Alton College with their presentation about ‘Super Volcanoes’ and wowed
the judges with their PowerPoint, video and answers to questions about the process
they had undertaken. The girls were deserving winners and received £25 Amazon
vouchers. Congratulations to all of them.
Congratulations to Year 9 Art student Charlotte
Larner: the winner of the Pride Catering Menu Art
Competition.
The winning design (as shown) will be featured on
the border of the new cafeteria menus, alongside
the work of the three runners up.
Congratulations also to the Year 9 Photography
students Callum Hornby, Jasmine O’Brien, Tegan
Armstrong and Morgan Ford, who will soon have
their work displayed as canvas prints in the café.
Thank you—Miss Kinsella
Sky Sports Living for Sport Programme
The six keys to success are designed to help young people develop valuable life skills that
will help them in and outside of school, now and into the
future.
The six keys to success are:
1. Mental toughness
2. Hunger to achieve
3. People skills
4. Sports and life knowledge
5. Breaking barriers
6. Planning for success
On Friday 6 February a group of Year 9 and 10 TPS students welcomed Pete Waterfield, the
Olympic diver and Sky Sports Living for Sport mentor and Damian Hinds MP.
Pete spent time with the students, focusing on leadership skills and giving them the
opportunity to have a go on the trampoline and learn some new skills such as back drops
and front somersaults. There was also a question and answer session where he talked
about his sports
experiences.
After a presentation by
Pete as to what the
programme entails, he
thrilled the group with
stories and photos of his
career and his successes
in all competitions
throughout his life including
a Gold in the Manchester
Commonwealth Games
2002 and Silver in Athens Olympics 2004
They had the opportunity to develop a sense of what Peter had trained for since the age of 9
by developing skills on the Trampoline which he then developed into diving for his Country.
A fantastic day was had by all and the students have truly been inspired by the day!

Year 11 Mock Interview Day
Last week each Year
11 student was given
the opportunity to be
interviewed by
individuals from the
local business
community, parents,
TPS Governors and
Further Education
College
representatives. The
aim of the day was to
show students how
they present at an
interview in preparation
for the world of work,
and some opted to wear
smart interview clothes
instead of their
uniform. Following the
interview, students were
given feedback on areas
such as the presentation
of their CV, their
appearance, body
language and overall
impression.
At the end of the day, 12
students were chosen as overall ‘top
candidates’ and will be presented later
with an award in a celebration
assembly. This Mock Interview Day is
always a very valuable experience for
students, allowing them to practise their
interview skills and gain insight into what a
good CV should look like before leaving
school and attempting to find employment.
Over the course of the day all students
conducted themselves in a professional
and mature manner and many of the
interviewers have commented on the
outstanding ability of all of our students.
Careers Co-ordinator, Alistair Clewley
said, “It is an invaluable experience for the
students and we are very grateful to
everyone who has given up their time to
help. I would like to thank all of the
employers who gave up their time to come
and interview our pupils and I look forward
to hosting them next year.”
British Basketball
Finals
On Sunday 11 January, 50 students and staff had the opportunity to watch British Basketball at the
highest level in the Men’s and Women’s BBL Cup finals at the NIA, Birmingham.
The atmosphere was fantastic with the Sheffield Hatters beating the Nottingham Wildcats 76-62 in
the women’s game and the Newcastle Eagles overcoming the Glasgow Rocks 84-71 in the men’s
game. All students were amazed by the level of athleticism on display and had a fantastic time!
The entertainment throughout the day was amazing. Supporting the two great finals were the BBL
cheerleaders with slam dunk contestants and high-flying
acrobatic dunkers all on show.

Horse Riding
Expedition
in the New Forest
TPS has started its own Pony Club! 25
students have signed up to attend the
Greatham Equestrian Centre for discounted
riding lessons. The one and a half hour
sessions run over 6 weeks up to Half Term,
followed by another 25 students after Half
Term. Due to its overwhelming popularity, the
intention is to run another course after
Easter . The students spend 45 minutes
learning about pony care and then 45 minutes
riding.
Horse Riding Club is
open to Years 7 to 10 of
all abilities from
beginners to experienced
riders. Mr Clewley heads
the Club this
term, supported by
experienced riders Miss
Sanders and Miss Duvot,
and after Easter Miss
Sanders will take over.
Mr Clewley
TPS Scuba Diving Academy
This term students from TPS have been
enjoying a fantastic opportunity to get involved
with Scuba Diving as an extra-curricular
activity.
TPS now has a Scuba Diving club which is run
every Monday after school. The club is open
to all students and cost £230 for a 7 week
introduction to scuba diving. The seven-week
course at Bedales’ pool is designed to help
students develop a variety of skills, both in and
out the water, including an
introduction to marine
conservation. The course will
prepare students ready to take
their Level 1 PADI Open Water
qualification that the course
leader Miss Warner hopes to
run in the summer term. There
are currently 33 students on
the course and a new
introduction to Scuba diving
course will be run in the
summer term.
Latin Club
Amo, amas, amat…
Translating Latin is like breaking an ancient
code, and many students have risen to the challenge over the last year. It is hard to
believe, but as of January, Latin Club has been running for a full year at TPS. I’m sure
many parents will remember Caecilius and his family, and their exciting adventures in
Pompeii - and nearly 30 Year 7, 8 and 9 students last year found themselves introduced
to the wondrous world where “Metella in atrio sedet” and “servus in horto laborat”.
Most of our team of regulars have now nearly completed Book 1 of the Cambridge Latin
Project, and will be steaming ahead into Book 2 starting in February. This means they
have successfully got to grips with the present, perfect and imperfect tenses of verbs, as
well as nominative, accusative, and dative (and a sneaky little touch of ablative) cases of
nouns. Their translation skills are admirable - they can fairly quickly get the jist of an
unseen passage, with a little vocab help.
The club has put together a google site on
tpssmart.com, Latin language quizzes on
memrise, and regularly compete in online
quizzes, armed with their growing Latin
knowledge. At the end of Winter term we even
held a Saturnalia party, complete with Romanstyle snacks (dates, pomegranates, and
‘wine’ (grape juice), Roman music, and Latin
charades!
Excitingly, next year should see our first cohort entered for the WJEC Latin Language
Level 2 qualification - which is equivalent to a GCSE and counts in the EBacc.
I am also pleased to announce that two of our newer staff, Mr Tweed and Mr Findlay,
have started a second cohort of the club
for new starters in the language, which is
running on Tuesdays after school. The
first few sessions are out the way, and the
students seem to have easily breezed
through the nominative and accusative.
However it is not too late for interested
members to join - please email any of the
staff involved to enquire.
Vale!

Catering Students’ success—Lauren
Cooks up a Storm at Chewton Glen
As winner of the area finals of the
Springboard Future Chef 2015, Year 10
Lauren Kates visited Chewton Glen, a luxury
country house hotel in the New Forest,
famed for its food. 15 year-old Lauren
prepared her new dishes for Head Chef,
Luke Matthews, who gave her positive and
constructive feedback, demonstrating how
he would present the dishes. Lauren said, “It
was the most amazing experience of my
life! The kitchens were huge and it was
fascinating to see how it all works.”.
Our Catering students are going from
strength to strength in their studies and their
hard work has paid off. Each year South
Downs College recognise and reward
exceptional performance by presenting
students have who exceeded expectations
and this year Lauren has received the award
based on her performance and
achievement. The nomination for Lauren
stated “Lauren has shown great promise
through her attitude and commitment to the
course…. She is always happy, polite and a
pleasure to teach” - Well done Lauren and
we wish her the best of luck in the next stage
of the National Springboard Future Chef
competition with takes place shortly.
As well as the individual award that
Lauren won, she was also part of the
Outstanding Curriculum Group
Award. Andrew Backshall, who is the
catering lecturer at South Downs
nominated the group because “their
behaviour and attitude towards the
course is fantastic and they are all
polite, happy and committed to the
course.” The group is made up of a
mixture of learners from different
schools, so it is fantastic that they
have built up a great team and are
working so well together.
Mrs Heath
Year 9 G&T Taster Day
14 Year 9 students enjoyed a Gifted and
Talented day at Havant College on
Wednesday 4 February.
The morning sessions included testing
decision making skills; students had to
consider factors of clothes shopping decisions
and then apply this process to choosing a
college. The morning session also challenged
teamwork, communication and pressure
through preparation for a presentation from a
list of topics including role models, learning
styles and inspirational TV programmes.
The afternoon session was choices of
masterclasses. Economy, Classical
Civilisation, Geography, Chemistry,
Psychology, Sociology were just some of the
many options available. Classical Civilisation is
the study of Ancient Greek and Roman
mythology. We studied a myth to decide how
much 'truth' there was in the belief in the Gods.
We also analysed spells from Harry Potter,
linking their Latin terminology to the lesson.
Psychology was a fascinating discovery about
how we remember things, we completed many
experiments to see how much we could
remember and applied this to criminal
Psychology.
Overall a great day!
Mrs Dollimore
U15 Netball
U15 Netball took on a school that we hadn’t played before, Meon Cross. With “Cats”
finished, the team flourished with old players returning, motivated to get back into the
team. With the addition of Saffron and Grace, two new students from other schools
starting in key positions, Miss Bullock was excited what the team could pull together
during the match. Going into the last quarter the score was 18-18 and Miss Bullock kept
the team the same with fingers crossed, hoping that they could beat them. With the
Rock Challenge dancers sitting around the edge cheering on every move the girls were
able to edge the lead with a nail-biting finish 24-21. With all players playing
exceptionally well, Miss Bullock couldn’t be prouder!

Geography Reward Postcards
Over the last few months in Geography we have seen some amazing work completed by our
Year 7 and 8 students. This has included tens of Year 7 students baking delicious coastal
landforms made out of cake, which not only tasted great, but also explained the processes
that create these iconic structures. We have also seen Year 8 students ponder the future of a
range of endangered animal species and try to come up with solutions to ensure their long
term survival.
Exceptional work like this
simply had to be
recognised and rewarded
and we hope that those
students who received a
geography postcard in the
post enjoyed the surprise.
We are sure that there will
be many more postcards
to follow over the next few
months as we continue
our Year 7 geography
journey to South America
and appreciate the impact
of conflict around the
world with Year 8.

Some lucky TPS students were given a fantastic and unique once in a lifetime opportunity
when they were invited on board one of three visiting Chinese Warships which were based in

School Uniform Supplier
Allsorts, the uniform market stall have informed us that from now on they are only available
for uniform on the market on Saturdays.
They have informed us they will continue to offer a good service to the school and will
endeavour to get uniform to our customers as quickly as possible, even by delivering
personally when they can if something is needed urgently .
Allsorts also intend to have a stall at some extra markets through August and at the start of
the summer term to ensure at the new term parents still have a full choice of suppliers to
equip the TPS students uniform.
Thank you - Jackie and Julie Sykes
TPS Appeal Trust News
At our last meeting the Committee agreed to new substantial commitments to school
projects that should really benefit your child during their time at TPS. For example we have
agreed to fund the purchase of a radio station for the school to be installed in the Music
block. This will enable the enrichment of the children’s learning over a whole range of
curriculum areas. We have also funded the purchase of equipment for the school’s
Greenpower STEM challenge as well as a maths magician for the Maths department and a
green screen for use by media and photography.
In consultation with the school, the next project we would like to support is a ‘make over’ for
the Year 7 school playground. We are conscious that when the children come from their
primary schools, they need a space in which to feel secure. Currently the playground area is
devoid of character. We have started the process of improving this area by donating £5,000
with which to buy new benches and seating areas. We now need you and your children’s
ideas on what else they would like to see in this space. A covered/ canopied area? Tables
with games? Playground markings of any sort?
We would be very grateful if you could please email the school any suggestions or ideas you
may have on :[email protected].
Thank you—Abi Jonas—Chair

The Performing Arts Faculty
TPS Are The
Cats Whiskers
At The Kings
After months of twice-weekly
rehearsals, the 145-strong cast
and crew of students from
Years 7 to 11 finally took to the
stage at The Kings Theatre,
Southsea, performing the wellloved musical – “Cats” - to sellout audiences and critical
acclaim. The sheer
professionalism and vitality of the
students impressed everyone in a
whirlwind two-hour show which,
according to many, would not
have looked out of place in the
West End.
In addition to three evening
performances, a special matinee
for primary schools attracted a
large and enthusiastic audience.
The set, designed and built by
staff and students, was a creative
mixture of all manner of dustbins,
car bonnets, wheels and general
“trash” which, along with the clever use of lighting, was a fitting backdrop for the action.
“Cats” is the perfect vehicle for a school as it allowed many individual performers to showcase
their incredible talent, brilliantly supported by the slick and animated cats chorus. The student
band, led by Head of Music Annette Joyce, was confident and accomplished and held the
show together with aplomb.
It was an amazing four months of hard work, dedication, rehearsing and laughter that no one
would have changed for anything! “Cats” is the largest production we have done to
date. Words cannot describe how proud we are of everyone involved. We always have the
utmost confidence in our students during performances, but each time they just manage to
blow us away!
I have to say a huge thank you to everyone who was involved in or supported us. The photos
say it all – it was an amazing week and an unforgettable experience for us all.”
Lisa Baker, Head of Specialism and Artistic Producer and Lucy Reah, Director
The Performing Arts Faculty
Although Cats has been the main focus
this term, we have also been rehearsing
for Rock Challenge, taking place on 26
March, the Petersfield Music Festival on
16 and 18 March and we have Year 7
Marvellous Maths on 17 March in the
Studio.
Over the last two weeks, the Year 9 and
Year 10 GCSE Dance students have
performed units of their coursework in
two Evenings of Dance.

Petersfield Festival
All students will be required to
use their own headphones in
Music after half term; many
students already are and are
in the habit of bringing theirs
in, well done to you! Please
ensure that you have your
own headphones as school
headphones will not be
replaced once they are
broken. Suitable headphones
are shown below.
Preparations are now in progress for our next large scale
event, Petersfield Music Festival. We will be forming a large
joint wind band with Churcher's wind band, some of our
string players will form a massed string orchestra with other
players from other local schools and members of the Year 7
& 8 choir will also perform.
Most students involved have been issued with booking
packs - if you haven't received one, please let Mrs Joyce
know ASAP as tickets are limited and sell out fast!
Extra Curricular Timetable
Instrumental Scheme
Please note changes and additional
sessions in the timetable for revision
and theory as shown on next page.
Please remember that students taking lessons in
school are required to attend the relevant rehearsals
for their instrument/voice. All singing students should
attend the relevant choir rehearsal on a Thursday.
Also the addition of a new
Musical Theatre based rehearsal
aimed at those students who took part
in Cats and wish to continue working
in this style or students who wish to
take part in the next school musical.
This will provide valuable singing
experience particularly for those
students wishing to audition for lead
roles. This rehearsal will start after
half term.
PLEASE NOTE all timetables can now be found on
the NEW school website by following the 'Curriculum'
Tab and choosing music lessons.
We are continuing to see attendance at lessons
improve with the 'Friday email' for non attenders.
Please note, this email is based solely on the
instrumental staff's paper registers. We are unable to
cross check with the central system due to time
constraints so please, do not take offence if your child
has been absent from school or on a trip. You do not
need to contact us, merely, ask your son or daughter
to let the teacher know at the following lesson.
