Catholic Church

In today’s readings we experience Jesus, as the suffering servant who brings
God’s love to the human family. St. Francis
de Sales reminds us that we are called to
be like Jesus:
The most powerful reason for Jesus’
death is to fill the human spirit with God’s
love. Out of death has come life, the wondrous paradox, which the world does not
understand. Jesus not only died a cruel
death to bring God’s love to us, but He also
suffered fear, terror, abandonment, and
inner depression such as never had and
never shall have an equal. He did this so
that we too may persevere in pursuing divine love.
Jesus’ human feelings left his entire
heart exposed to sorrow and anguish. For
this reason he cries out: “My God, why
have you forsaken me?” Mount Calvary is
the mount of lovers. All love that does not
take its origins from the Savior’s passion is
foolish and perilous. On Calvary, we can
not have life without love. Nor can we have
divine love without dying to our false loves.
Christian wisdom consists in choosing
rightly. Hence we ought to consecrate every moment of our lives to the eternal divine
love of Our Savior’s death. This means we need to empty ourselves of all other loves that are destroying us so that we may be filled with God’s eternal love that gives life!
So when injured by others, look often with your inward eyes on Christ Jesus, crucified, forsaken
and overwhelmed, by every kind of anguish. Then think of the many people who are incomparably
more afflicted than you are and say: “Are not my hardships roses in comparison with those, who
without help, assistance, or relief live a continual death under the burden of afflictions infinitely
greater than mine? When all things fail us, when our distress is at its height, say the final words of
Jesus on the cross: “Into Your hands I commend my spirit.”

Blessing of Easter Food and Baskets will take place on Saturday, April 4 at 11:00
am in the Church.
In many countries the blessing of Easter foods is an important tradition. Many parishes still
participate in this custom of the blessing of the Easter food or baskets.
In some places the blessing of special Easter food takes place on Holy Saturday. The baskets
may contain lamb meat (which of course signifies Jesus, the Lamb of God), Ham, Sausages and
other meats, boiled eggs, dyed and plain, Pascha (a special Easter bread), butter, wine and other
foods. Children can help prepare the family basket or their own Easter Basket filled with sweets
to remind them of the Resurrection of Jesus. The food is then taken home and eaten on Easter Sunday.
Among the Polish people the same custom is practiced, but the main foods blessed are an egg
which is broken and shared by all on Easter Sunday morning, and a lamb or cross of butter or
pastry. This butter-lamb and blessed Easter egg have a place of honor on the festive Easter table.
In Rome on Holy Saturday there is an old custom which is still in practice. A fresh table cloth
is spread on the table in the dining room and on it are laid out the Easter meal, including the uncooked Easter Lamb which is decorated with flowers, eggs, wine, fruit, and a large traditional
cake called "pizza". These are sprinkled with holy water, and are given a special blessing by the
priest.
Whatever your ethnic or cultural background, the blessing of Easter food unique to you and
your family can be blest. Why not add this special tradition to your Family’s Easter celebrations.

Battle of the Books Champions!
A BIG congratulations to the St. Ann Battle of the Books
team! On the afternoon of March 18th, for the SECOND year
in a row, nine 4th and 5th grade students from St. Ann School
successfully competed against St. Patrick Catholic School and
the Fayetteville Academy. They spent almost 5 months reading a list of 18 pre-selected novels and being quizzed on those
books after school every week. Their hard work paid off with a
victory! We are very proud of their accomplishment!

Come Celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday
What is Divine Mercy Sunday?
The world was in the midst of the Great Depression in 1931 and the memories of World War I
were still very much alive in the minds of Europeans when in Poland a sister of the Congregation
of Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938), is said to have been personally
visited by Jesus.
According to her diary, which was listed on the Index of Forbidden Books for more than 20 years,
an image was revealed to her of the risen Lord, from whose heart shone two rays, one red
(representing blood) and the other “pale” (symbolizing water), with the words “Jesus, I trust in
you” at the bottom. Faustina wrote in her diary that Jesus told her, “I promise that the soul that
will venerate this image will not perish.”
When she was canonized in 2000 under the direction of fellow countryman Pope John Paul II, he
proclaimed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday,
thereby widely promoting the devotional practices associated with Faustina’s visions, already popular in many communities.
The celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday is an opportunity to reflect on the theme of how God’s
mercy can overcome sin and, as the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the
Sacraments states, “a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine
benevolence, the difficulties and trials that mankind [sic] will experience in the years to come.”
St. Ann Parish will celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday with a Liturgy of the Word and the singing of
the Chaplet of Divine Mercy on April 12 at 12:45 in the Church.
