The Passion and Death of Jesus
This weekend we enter into
the holiest and most important
week of our church year. The
final week of the life of Jesus
Christ, his violent and brutal
death on the cross, and the glory
of the resurrection lie ahead for us. Make the liturgies of
Holy Week your top priority. Mark’s gospel, the shortest
of the four, devotes one third of its length to the final
journey of Jesus. The passion narrative that we will hear
this Palm Sunday, is Mark’s version.
The passion narrative becomes our meditation; as our
imagination allows us to feel with the characters of
Peter and the apostles, of Judas and the high priest, of
Pontius Pilate and the screaming crowds of onlookers, of
Mary his mother and John the beloved of the Lord. “Were
you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there
when they crucified my Lord? Oh, oh, oh, oh sometimes it
causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there
when they crucified my Lord?”
The crucifixion and death of Jesus was a shattering
series of events in the lives of his disciples. They were
hoping that he was the one who would set Israel free. His
death on a cross as a common criminal upended their
world. Their expectations were obliterated in the finality
of death. Even the manner of his death was a scandal for
them. “God’s curse rests on him who hangs on a tree.”
(Deuteronomy 21. 23)
They fled for their lives, knowing that they were at
risk to be taken captive and crucified as the followers of
a man perceived to be both a threat to the religious
authorities and to the Roman Empire.
It was only in the unexpected event of the
resurrection that they began to understand the meaning
of the scandal of the cross. They searched in the Torah and
the Writings and the Prophets for themes that would
help them understand who Jesus was, and the meaning of
his death. The powerful motifs of the rejected messengers
of God, the prophets, and the suffering righteous one
(Isaiah, and the book of Wisdom 2 and the book of
Daniel), helped these early Christians deal with the
shame of Jesus’s public humiliation and death.
“For I handed on to you as of first importance
what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our
sins in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he
was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in
accordance with the Scriptures, and that he
appeared to Cephas (Peter), then to the twelve. Then
he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and
sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive,
though some have died.” (1 Corinthians 15. 3-6)
Jesus Christ had died for us and our sins. “For
the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve,
and to give his life as a ransom for the many.” (Mark
10. 45) Paul keyed in on this theme as central in his
letters, written in the 50s and 60s A.D., to various
Christian communities - not long after the death
and resurrection of Jesus.
“The stone that the builders rejected has become
the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and
it is wonderful in our eyes.” (Mark 12. 10-11) The
gospel of Mark, written around the time of the
destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D.,
is quoting Psalm 118. The themes of the rejected
prophet, and the suffering servant of God take
center stage in the developing theology of the early
Christians. The rejected prophet, vindicated in the
resurrection, is now the foundation of the new
Temple, his body the church.
God has triumphed over darkness and death in
the crucifixion, and the seeming failure of the
mission of Christ. Instead, paradoxically, victory
and glory can be found in the cross. As the hymn
“Glory in the Cross” proclaims so well, “Let us
ever glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
our salvation and our hope. Let us bow in homage
to the Lord of life, who was broken to make us
whole.”
God’s great love has conquered all that seeks to
destroy the human heart, with its hopes and
dreams. Death has no power over us, glory fills us
all!

HOLY LAND COLLECTION
Good Friday, April 3rd
On Good Friday, our parish will take up the
annual Good Friday Collection for the Holy
Land. Each day, the news reminds us of the
violence and instability plaguing the Middle
East, but we rarely hear of the shrinking
Christian community there, a community that
struggles to remain in the land of Christ’s
birth, death and resurrection. Please help
support our brothers and sisters in the Holy
Land by giving to the Good Friday Collection.
This Pontifical Collection allows the
Franciscans and others to continue caring
for Christianity’s holiest sites and for God’s
people in the Holy Land. Please be
generous.

AN EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE:
The Second Vatican Council defines our conscience as the
voice of God echoing in the depths of our hearts calling us to
do this and to avoid that. The conscience is the secret core and
sanctuary of a human being. In our conscience, we are alone
with God. What is God asking of me at this time and in this
situation?
pray for the unity of the church and for the proclamation of
Jesus Christ to all nations?
Do I speak out when others are being bullied or treated poorly?
In my work or profession am I just, hard-working, honest, and
serving society out of love for others? Do I pay a fair wage to
my employees?
Do I obey legitimate authority and give it due respect?

ethnic group? Do I express my prejudice in what I say or do?
Have I worked hard to control my vices, my bad inclinations
and passions? Have I been proud and boastful, thinking myself
better than others and looking down on others as less important
than myself?
In my family life, have I contributed to the well-being and
happiness of the rest of my family by overlooking faults and
being patient? Have I been obedient to my parents, showing
them proper respect and giving them willing assistance? Have
I been careful to give a good example to my children teaching
them by my words and actions about God’s love and
forgiveness? Have I been faithful to my husband (wife) in my
heart and in the way I relate to others?
What have you made of time, of health and strength, of the gifts
God has given me to be used for the sake of others and the
gospel? Have I been lazy and too much given to leisure?
Do I share my possessions with those less fortunate? Do I
reach out to the victims of oppression, misfortune, and poverty?
Do I share in the charitable works of my parish by getting
involved in ministry and making donations to the needy? Do I

are required to participate in one Sacramental Preparation
session. These meetings are held on the first and third Sunday
of each month. After attending the 9:30am Mass, parents
should proceed to the Parish Center (below the church) for
the Baptism Preparation Class. Godparents are welcome. Please

to register for the preparation session and the Baptism

Matrimony - Marriage arrangements should be made with a
deacon or priest at least six months before the proposed
wedding date. No dates for marriage will be given over the

Anointing of the Sick - The Sacrament of the Anointing
of the Sick may be received by any Catholic who is preparing
for surgery, or is of advanced age, or is seriously ill. The
sacrament is the Church’s prayer for health and healing and
should not be delayed until there is danger of death. Please
call the rectory to speak with a priest. Also, to arrange for
Communion to be brought to the homebound, please call the

collection on Easter Sunday. The second collection will
be for the Social Ministry/Outreach Program here at
St. Kilian’s. Thank you for your generosity.
2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal
Serving God by Serving Others
St. Kilian’s goal for this year is $133,000.00. So far
pledges total $77,430.00 or 58.22% of goal. Payments
received so far total $46,317.00.
Do Parishes benefit in any way from the Appeal?
Resources contributed to the CMA are distributed in a way
that allows our Catholic faith to be lived and shared
throughout our 133 communities. Parishes that reach goal
receive a 20 percent rebate and any paid gifts raised over
that goal generate an 80 percent rebate to parishes on
those gifts. Our parishes use their rebates to support Parish
Outreach programs, develop special programs for the
community, or to help maintain their physical structures

SOCIAL MINISTRY/OUTREACH
Outreach is our parish community’s response to the Gospel call to help those in need.
We serve anyone who lives within our parish boundaries regardless of religion, race or ethnicity.
We are located at 140 Elizabeth Street but our main entrance is in the parking lot facing Conklin Street.
OUR FOOD PANTRY AND OFFICE IS OPEN MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY, 10AM-2:30PM.
We are also available certain Saturdays by appointment only. Spanish translators are available Tuesdays and Fridays.

We are very excited to be starting a new ministry called “FRIENDLY VISITORS”!
We are looking for volunteers to sit, talk, play cards or a board game, read, etc. with a
homebound senior in our community for about an hour per week. This is a socialization
program and not a program for doing chores. We will interview, train and background
check all volunteers. If you are interested in learning more about this new volunteer
opportunity, or if you know of a homebound person who would like a weekly visit from
our volunteers, call Nina at Outreach or drop this form in the collection basket at Mass

audition for the show. Audition dates will be Friday March
27th and Friday, April 10 with callbacks on Sunday April
12th. Auditions will be held in the basement of the church
from 7:30PM to 9:00PM. Please be prepared to sing 16
bars of a song of your choice. If you are unable to attend

“TOUCHED BY GRACE”
An Invitation
How has God been moving in your life? What are
the moments when you have felt touched by the grace of
the Holy Spirit within you and around you?
Certainly, many of us have had profound
experiences of God’s grace filling us with awe and wonder
that He could touch us so deeply.
News Flash!!! Those moments are not meant for us
to keep to ourselves but to share with others so that they,
too, might reap the rewards of God’s grace. What a better
way to nourish us as a community of faith, the Body of
Christ, than to witness God’s love in action in the hearts of
His people.
To that end, we are inviting you to submit your
testimony of how you have been touched by the grace of
God. Each week, we will print one story in our parish
bulletin in a column entitled “Touched by Grace.” (200 - 350
words.)

This spring, couples that have
been married fifty years or more will be honored
at liturgies on Sunday, April 19 at the Church of
St. Lawrence the Martyr in Sayville and on
Sunday, April 26 at the Church of Maria Regina in
Seaford. Both liturgies will begin at 2:30pm.
Couples may register for ONE liturgy.
Registration forms and complete instructions can be
obtained at the rectory. Registration must be
received by the Office of Worship by April 6 for the
April 19 liturgy and by April 13 for the April 26
liturgy.

parking lot to receive your donations of clothing. The bin is for
the donations of clothing only, not for furniture or household
items. Please place your donations of clothing in the bin. Your

BAUTISMO:
Se celebra cada cuarto domingo de mes, a las 2:00 de la tarde.
Es requisito para los papás y padrinos, atender la clase prebautismal, cada tercer miércoles de mes a las 6:30 PM, en la parte
baja de la Iglesia. Por favor llame a la rectoría para hacer su cita
con el sacerdote, para llenar el formato; usted deberá traer el
certificado o registro de nacimiento de su niño. Los niños de 6
años ó más, deberán asistir a las clases de catequesis regular.
PADRINOS: Deben ser católicos, con los Sacramentos de
Bautismo, Comunión y Confirmación; solteros ó casados por la
Iglesia. Deben traer una notificación indicando que están
registrados o son miembros de la Parroquia, en donde viven ó
adonde asisten a misa. No pueden ser padrinos las personas que
tienen parejas sin haberse casados por la Iglesia.

Domingo de Ramos
de la Pasión del Señor
Llegamos a la Semana Santa. O Semana Mayor,
como muchos le llamamos a este tiempo del año litúrgico
tan especial, ya que es el culmen de nuestra vida de fe. En
este domingo, como durante el Triduo Pascual, la liturgia
nos invita a vivir rituales diferentes de lo que habitualmente
hacemos durante el año. Por lo tanto, es necesario prestar
atención especial para que no se nos haga rutina.
Conviene que revisemos con cuidado esmerado las
lecturas, símbolos y especialmente la liturgia del Triduo
Pascual. Los catecúmenos deben de estar preparados
para que, con entusiasmo, participen de la celebración
desde la bendición de los ramos hasta la Vigilia Pascual.
Con nuestros cantos de júbilo del hosanna, que
literalmente significa “sálvanos”, y el Kyrios, cuyo
significado es “Señor”, damos inicio a la entrada triunfante
del Señor a Jerusalén. Él entra humildemente montado en
un burrito, según nos dice la Escritura, pues llega
buscando la paz. Imagínate tú mismo entre la gente de ese
día, agitando las palmas y lleno de gozo por haber visto al
Mesías. ¿Cuáles son sus esperanzas del Mesías al llegar a
Jerusalén? ¿Qué haremos esta Semana Santa para
acompañar al Señor? Dios viene a nosotros humildemente,
sin forzarnos, enseñándonos que su amor es sin medida.
La victoria triunfante de Jesús en la cruz es muestra de
humildad, no de poder. Sin duda alguna, el Reino que
Jesús nos ofrece por medio de la cruz es distinto al que
nosotros muchas veces deseamos. Al acompañar a Jesús
en este Domingo de Ramos palparemos algo nuevo: Dios y
su Reino se nos han acercado.
El Viernes Santo, nuestra parroquia llevara a cabo
la colecta anual del Viernes Santo para la Tierra
Santa. Las noticias diarias nos recuerdan de la
violencia y la instabilidad que atormenta al Medio
Oriente, pero nosotros raramente escuchamos de la
disminuyente comunidad Cristiana que se
encuentra alla, una comunidad que lucha por
permanecer en la tierra del nacimiento, muerte y
resurreccion de Christo. Por favor ayude a nuestros
hermanos y hermanas en la Tierra Santa. Esta
colecta pontificial permite que los Franciscanos y
otros continuen trabajando pos los Cristianos en los
lugares mas santos y por el pueblo de Dios en la
Tierra Santa. Por favor sea generoso con su ayuda.
