Doctoral School Days (DSD) What is it ? – The Doctoral School Days (DSD) is an event for all PhD students of the SIMEM Doctoral School. – It is organized by the DSD Committee, consisting of volunteer PhD students – Like any conference, PhD students can present their thesis work with a talk or with a poster, and that should be understandable by any scientiﬁc PhD student. It’s a good exercise for training yourself to speak about your subject and to popularize it ! Mason International Women’s Day Scientiﬁc Culture I was asked to write about something that I feel passionate about. I looked for an interesting topic and then I realized that today is Sunday, March the 8th ! The international day for women ! So I would like to remember with you those women that revolutionized our era. In the following, you may have already heard about some of them. Today, I have just discovered more awesome women. Marie Curie Of course, for me the most famous of them is Marie Sklodowska-Curie (1863-1934) from Poland. She is the ﬁrst woman to have won a Nobel Prize. She remains one of only two people in history to be awarded two Nobel Prizes in two different scientiﬁc ﬁelds. sicist, space scientist, and mathematician. She brilliantly calculated the trajectory for Apollo 11. Her work was so accurate that when NASA switched to using computers, they would call her to check the computer’s calculations for errors. That occurred in 1962 for John Glenn’s orbit around the Earth. Margaret Hamilton Without the next woman, we probably would never have been on the moon. Her name is Margaret Hamilton and she was born in 1936. She is a computer scientist, systems engineer, and business owner. She wrote the self-testing code for the Apollo 11 mission. That code saved the mission 3 minutes before landing on the moon when the computer was overloaded with incoming data. Thanks to Hamilton, it continued to run and prioritize important tasks for the landing. Hedy Lamarr Now, I shall talk about women that I have just recently discovered. I will begin with Hedy Lamarr (1914-2000) who I had, in fact, heard of as a famous actress from Hollywood. What I didn’t know was that she was also a mathematician. She invented the frequency hopping spread spectrum, a technology still used today in GPS, Wiﬁ, and Bluetooth. Valentina Tereshkova I have also discovered a famous Russian woman who is now 78 years old. She is the ﬁrst woman to be sent into space. Her ﬁrst voyage was on the 16th of June 1963 when she was 26. Valentina Tereshkova orbited earth 48 times in 3 days. In 2013, she volunteered for a one-way trip to Mars whenever the opportunity would arise. I have always been fascinated by space and what may be beyond, so I will stay in this ﬁeld and talk about two more women that have brought space closer to us. Et contrairement à ce qui est demandé en entreprise, l’aspect « recherche de proﬁts » au détriment du sérieux scientiﬁque est normalement peu présent, il est donc possible de s’attarder sur certains détails, pour bien les approfondir. Quel était ton sujet de thèse ? « Traitement sur surface et variétés avec mise en application au patrimoine culturelle ». Cette thèse a été ﬁnancée par le conseil régional à 100%. Un des objectifs, concerne l’exploration et les opportunités de la technologie 3D pour la valorisation du patrimoine culturel. Ainsi nous faisons de la restauration (géométrie ou couleur) ou l’interpolation de données (inpainting, la segmentation) sur des objets 3D. L’idée est de représenter un nuage de points ou une surface 3D par un graphe. Puis nous avons réutilisé un formalisme pour traiter des données discrètes sur graphe, développé au sein de l’équipe Image, pour approximer des opérateurs différentiels (gradients, laplacien, . . . ) et résoudre des EDP (Équations aux Dérivées Partielles) sur ces nuages de points. Pour donner un exemple, cela pouvait consister à restaurer les couleurs ou la géométrie d’un vase ancien. Quels outils as-tu utilisés ? OPTI’mag #1 - March/April 2015 Pas trop dur d’écrire ses propres articles ? Comment tu t’y es pris ? J’ai d’abord eu des réunions avec mon directeur de thèse pour préparer les articles (contribution scientiﬁque, plan, introduction) et une fois que j’avais des ébauches d’articles, je les faisais relire, réécrire et corriger par mon entourage. Tu as fais de l’enseignement. Qu’en as-tu pensé ? J’ai bien aimé ! J’ai apprécié de pouvoir parler franchement avec les élèves. Maintenant j’ai moins peur de parler devant du monde ! Quel est ton impression générale sur la thèse ? La thèse c’est comme un marathon : faut avancer tous les jours et ne pas attendre le dernier moment ! Et maintenant que tu es docteur, que fais-tu ? J’ai actuellement un contrat ATER (Attaché Temporaire d’Enseignement et de Recherche) à temps plein avec l’université de Caen, jusqu’à ﬁn août. Ensuite j’essayerai d’obtenir un contrat de recherche post-doctoral à l’étranger. C’est le bon moment pour partir sans contraintes et ça fera de nouvelles expériences !
