World Meeting for Families’
Theme for March is Creating
a Future. Creating the Future
Marriage is meant to be fertile and
welcome new life. Children shape
the future, just as they themselves
are shaped in their families.
Without children, there can be no future. Children reared with
love and guidance are the foundation for a loving future. Wounded
children portend a wounded future. Families are the bedrock for
all larger communities. Families are domestic churches, places
where parents help children discover that God loves them and has
a plan for each child’s life.
Roast Beef Dinner at Holy Rosary School.

Sunday April 12 from 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
Adults $10.00 Child (5 to 12) $5.00 under 5

Come to the Cathedral to celebrate Mass and
Divine Mercy Sunday and stay for dinner!
Everyday Stewardship
In trying to understand the true power of stewardship, we need
not look any further than the cross. It serves as a tremendous
example of giving everything away freely for God and the people of
God. Jesus answered the call, regardless of the cost, and the cost
was life itself.
Duluth-Superior Catholic Young Adults Interested in
fellowship and/or opportunities to grow in your faith while
connecting with other people your age? DSCYA seeks to assist you
in this through social gatherings, Theology in Tap, service, and
prayers nights. Aimed at ages 21-39. For upcoming DSCYA
events, check out our website at dscya.weebly.com,
email [email protected] to subscribe to our email list, or friend
us on Facebook.
Most of us will never have to sacrifice our lives in response to
God's call. But there are Christians all across the globe that do
every day. Missionaries have died due to violence or disease.
Activists stood up for the basic rights of others and have lost their
own right to live. Men and women who swore to keep the peace or
rescue others from disaster have traded a lifetime with family and
friends for the sake of the vulnerable. These people answered that
call and responded with courage and commitment.
AROUND THE DIOCESE
Bulletin Notices
Ham Bingo! St. Mary Star of the Sea, Sunday March 29th.
Lunch at 1:00 PM, Bingo starts at 2:00 PM. Boards are $2 each or
3 for $5. There will also be a raffle with a $500 first prize.
But even though our sacrifice might not be as great, it does not
diminish the power in the response. Perhaps through our small
everyday actions, someone will be touched by God and then
transformed. It is not the size of the sacrifice that counts, but the
complete willingness to give that sacrifice. Jesus' sacrifice is
sufficient for the salvation of all humanity. Now, we are called to
translate that reality into our own somewhat simple lives.
Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother, an
extraordinary study that reveals Mary's unique role in God's
Kingdom and in our lives will be presented at St. Ben’s. This
series, filmed on location in the Holy Land, will place you in the
midst of the powerful drama of her earthly life. You will learn how
she works in our lives today, drawing us ever closer to her divine
Son. This 8-week study begins on Tuesday, April 7th at 7:00
PM For more info or to register, call Sister Anna Rose
(218) 724-4828 or email [email protected].
Northland Family Programs invites you to “Tea for Two”
a mother/daughter event for girls ages 9-13 and their mothers (or
a female relative, friend or mentor in place of the mother). Learn
about body changes and cycles, self-image and effective mother/
daughter communication in a short presentation. Then the two of
you will sit down to a pretty table with fancy treats, tea and punch
and have time to talk. The tea will be Sunday, April 19th 2-4 PM
at Essentia Health, St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. Cost of
the program is $20.00 for mother and daughter. Preregistration is required call Kathy 800-842-0279. Registration
deadline is April 14th.
On those days when being a good steward seems too difficult, look
to the cross and find strength in a God who knows how hard this
earthly life can be at times. Look to fellow stewards who are
carrying their crosses and find empathy and companionship.
Reflect on the lives of saints and those who gave their lives because
of their love of God. Then go forth into a world that so badly needs
Jesus and give thanks for knowing how hard the day otherwise
would be without him.

Q
A
What are the servant songs of Isaiah? How do they
relate to Jesus' life and ministry?
The four servant songs, Isaiah 42:1-4, 49:1-6, 50:4-9, and
52:13--53:12, are strategically placed in Second Isaiah to
offer hope and consolation to a suffering Israel during its
Babylonian Exile.
Israel had been defeated by the Babylonians, who
destroyed their Temple, killed the last of the kings in
David's lineage, and exiled them from their land,
transporting them to Babylon. This is the context in
which Second Isaiah composes his powerfully poetic
book of hope and consolation. A significant part of that
message is the portrait of God's servant, who is called to
be a source of hope and encouragement for the people.
Each of the four poems emphasizes God's choice and
election of the servant. The last poem stresses the
suffering and rejection of God's servant, along with his
eventual death. Isaiah is certain that God will use the
servant's innocent suffering as a way to redeem and
remove the guilt and sin of others. Thus the servant
becomes a source of salvation for himself and for others.
Who is this servant? Many suggest that Isaiah was
referring to Israel herself, as she underwent exilic
suffering which would ultimately prove to be redemptive.
Jesus' followers, including those for whom Mark wrote
his Gospel, understood Jesus' ministry in terms of
Isaiah's suffering servant whose innocent suffering and
death became the means of salvation for all.

process. The normal grieving time for a significant loss is three to
five years, with the second year being the most difficult. This
process of grief will be done in a healthy or unhealthy way. In
order to help those that are grieving, Cathedral will be offering a
five-week course on grief education and support. The classes are
open to the public, and will begin Wednesday, April 8 from 7:00

It was during the fourth century in Jerusalem that
Christians first starting using palm branches in
commemoration of Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem.
Today, we continue to use palms in most churches on
this Sunday, Catholic and Protestant alike. It is one of
those traditions of worship that, no matter how far
apart we may seem at times, we continue to share due
to our common heritage.

But Palm Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday,
because we hear an account of the passion of Jesus
Christ during the liturgy. Most churches also share this
reading in common. Many Catholic parishes use
multiple lectors to proclaim the Gospel, while it is not
uncommon for a similar reading or even a performance
in many mainstream Protestant churches.

The commonality found in the worship on this
particular Sunday seems to highlight the fundamental
truth in the observance: Jesus Christ died for everyone.
He did not die on a cross for just Catholics, or just
Orthodox, or just Protestants. Whether one
acknowledges it or not, he was crucified for all those
who are born of man. Today, we rejoice not just for
what he has done for us but also for what he has done
for all of creation.
