book about Borgess–Health Care Anew: The First
125 Years of Borgess Health–will be available
March 30 at The Seasons Gift Shop within Borgess
Medical Center.

“The title is our quasquicentennial celebration theme,”
said Tom Comes, director, marketing and communications, Borgess Health. “It echoes the important words
describing the caring direction of the Congregation of
St. Joseph–Neighboring Anew.
“Noted Michigan author Larry Massie wrote our book,”
Comes said. “He has completed more than 20 Michigan
history books in the past 35 years. Larry first fell under
the spell of Borgess heritage in 1980 while researching
Kalamazoo: The Place Behind the Products, which he
co-authored with Peter Schmitt.
“Larry and his wife, Priscilla, have assisted us with
our centennial events in 1989 and in the creation of a
Kalamazoo Gazette historical insert for our 110 year
anniversary in 1999,” Comes said.

Transport Services earns Crothall Healthcare
President’s Council Award
Crothall Healthcare has honored its Patient Transportation
(PT) team at Borgess Medical Center with the annual
President’s Council Award. The award is given to PT
teams that have exceeded targets in performance, finance,
audits, safety and patient satisfaction.
A trophy recognizing the team’s accomplishments was
given and is currently being displayed in their dispatch
office. The entire team is absolutely thrilled to have been recognized for its efforts and has the goal of working hard to
achieve this award again in 2015.
Borgess’ transport services provide between 550 and 650 runs per day. On average,
this translates to one transporter completing approximately 3.51 trips per productive
hour, while the industry average is 2.66.
Every current manager of the transport department has been a transporter as well. This
model of promoting from within has helped us to gain a better understanding of not
only the job, but most importantly, how we impact the patients. Borgess has seen several transport managers go on to successful careers at other facilities around the nation.

You may have heard the phrases “One Integrated Ministry” and “One Ascension.”
As part of the largest non-profit health system in the U.S., you play a vital role in
fulfilling our Mission to meet the needs of individuals and communities, with special
attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. We aim to transform health and health
care in a rapidly changing environment.
It’s time for all Borgess Health associates to

In order to continue to deliver on our Mission, it is important that we share a common
understanding of today’s health care environment and our vision of the future.
Ascension values associate engagement, and we believe the key to success is education, collaboration and dedication.
Registration for Engagment Map sessions
Last year Ascension leadership began using “Engagement Maps” to engage associates
in discussions about our journey to One Ascension. The Engagement Map process is
an interactive learning activity in which participants share ideas and opinions by
exploring information about three topics.
The Changing Health Care Landscape is about the current state of the health care
industry in the United States, and how it may change in the future. Person-Centered
Care is our vision of the future of healthcare and is focused on the people we serve.
It is our promise to support individuals’ lifelong health and well-being through holistic, coordinated care models and resources. We will focus on the basic needs that they
have voiced to us: Welcome Me, Respect Me, Include Me, Protect Me, Connect Me,
Engage Me, and Comfort Me.
One Integrated Ministry depicts how we will work together to deliver
Person-Centered Care.
I look forward to your participation in Engagement Map sessions. They will
be scheduled:
■ For leaders, starting in late March and for all other associates in April through May.
■ At the BMC Lawrence Education Center, Borgess Gardens, Borgess Health Park,

St. Patrick’s Day
“The music makes people happier, including me,”
said Martha Kuch, a Borgess Volunteer who plays
her harp each week in the Borgess Medical Center
atrium entrance.
Martha played Irish music on St. Patrick’s Day
(March 17), including “Fanny Power,” by Turlough
O’Carolan, a blind harpist and considered by some
to be Ireland’s national composer.
“Martha’s music is appreciated by young and old,”
said Julie Luginbill, manager, Borgess Volunteer
Services. “Like Martha, I also see faces light up as
they briefly hear Martha’s gentle music and pass
through our main entrance. While it’s said that
‘Everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day,’ Martha’s
music helps make every day special.”

Dr. Green was also selected by the
Heritage Community of Kalamazoo’s
Board of Directors for his service and
advocacy, particularly for individuals
(and their families) living with
Alzheimer’s and Dementia in Kalamazoo
and southwest Michigan.
“It is a privilege to recognize Dr. Green
as our very first Purple Poppy Award
recipient,” said Jay Prince, President &
CEO of Heritage Community of
Kalamazoo. “We honor his service and
compassion that is focused on improving
the comfort of others through innovative,
person-centered care.”
Dr. Green served on the Heritage
Community of Kalamazoo Board of
Directors from 2008 to 2011 when the
organization expanded to provide additional residential care to people living
with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. He is a
board-certified neurologist with a subspecialty in dementia and geriatrics. Dr.
Green is director of neurological research
at the Borgess Research Institute and also
the medical director of the Borgess
Geriatric Assessment Center.
His leadership on numerous research
projects for memory-loss diseases
continues to benefit many in our
community and beyond. Dr. Green
served as a research investigator on all of
the medications that are currently
approved for Dementia and Alzheimer’s.

“A historical writer could not have invented a more colorful story brimming with
emotion and drama,” wrote Larry Massie in the book’s preface. “Father Francis
O’Brien’s giving last rites to a sick youth thrown in jail because there was no hospital in Kalamazoo–his pledge to change that situation–the $5,000 seed money given
by his friend and mentor Bishop Caspar Borgess of Detroit–Fr. O’Brien’s long quest
for Sisters to staff the hospital ending with the arrival of 11 brave Sisters of St.
Joseph from Watertown, New York–and the story continues for 125 glorious years.”
Transition and growth
The book offers glimpses of Kalamazoo’s first
hospital as we transition from a general hospital
into a regional medical center and then become
a part of Ascension Health, the nation’s largest
Catholic and not-for-profit health system.
Ascension Health was formed in 1999 when
the four provinces of the Daughters of Charity
of St. Vincent de Paul (now combined into one
province, the St. Louise Province) that were
Sponsors of the Daughters of Charity National
Borgess Hospital, 1960.
Health System, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of
Nazareth, Mich. (now part of the Congregation of St. Joseph), brought their health
systems together.

perseverance and wisdom of our foundresses, the Sisters of St. Joseph,” said Kathy
A. Young, president & CEO, Borgess Health. “We are inspired by the first 125 years
