Do not attempt repairs or use defective vehicles. 19 Wed Thurs Fri Sat Module 4 Test Information The Module 4 Test is taken at the practical driving test centre. The candidate is required to demonstrate and explain their knowledge in five key areas designed by the Driving Standards Agency, and by working with transport companies to create a 'real world' test. The five topic areas are: • Ability to load the vehicle with due regard for safety rules and proper vehicle use • Security of the vehicle and contents • How to avoid transporting illegal immigrants and banned substances • Understand what to do in an emergency or incident • Ability to check the vehicle for defects The candidate will be expected to take a hands on approach to answering the examiners questions. The candidate will be presented at the driving test centre with the training vehicle, which they can use to demonstrate their knowledge. The examiner will ask various questions and ask the candidate to show how they would do a task. Each of the topics areas will have up to four questions or requests to demonstrate. Some topics will only have one question or request to demonstrate. The examiner will be looking for the candidate to explain verbally or demonstrate physically the 'Key Knowledge Indicators' (KKI's) as created by the DSA. The KKI's sought by the examiner are not published directly; instead they prefer the candidate to have a good general understanding of the topic area as a whole. By having this understanding the candidate should be able to satisfactory answer the question or show the examiner what should be carried out with a hands on demonstration. The marking system works as a percentage, if all the questions and demonstrations are correct the candidate can score a maximum mark of 100%. Each topic area is worth 20% with each KKI worth 5% and a maximum of four KKI's available for the topic area. For an example question: What would you do if you were involved in a road accident? KKI 1 - Turn off your vehicle so that fuel and battery is isolated, 5% gained KKI 2 - Warn others of danger with hazard lights, warning triangles, another 5% gained KKI 3 - Offer assistance to others, another 5% gained KKI 4 - Contact the emergency services, final 5% gained to make a maximum of 20% However there is one exception to this marking system, the topic area, Ability to check the vehicle for defects is divided into 2% for each of the 10 KKI's, which in this case are parts of the vehicle such as tyres, lights and tachograph that the candidate needs to check for defects. However the score for this topic can only be the same as the other topic areas, 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% or 20%. If the candidate misses out 2 items, such as lights and reflectors they will lose 4% but this will be rounded down to a 5% loss to give a score of 15% for this topic. A minimum of 15% must be scored for each topic area so candidates must ensure they do not forget more than two of the 10 defect check items that form part of this test. It is with this in mind that we recommended that you ensure you use the vehicle defect check sheet provided in this booklet during the test. Candidates are permitted to use check sheets to ensure they don't miss any items during this walk around test, as these check sheets are commonly used by professional drivers. The other 4 topic areas that have four KKI's, the candidate must mention or demonstrate a minimum of three to gain the minimum of 15% required to pass. The overall percentage scored must also be over 80% for the entire test and final result. 20 Topic One: Ability to load the vehicle with due regard for safety rules and proper vehicle use Question One, Part One Your fully laden vehicle is ready for you to do a delivery.
