We began our 31st season Monday, March 2nd.
The team rehearses every Monday morning at 10:00 am at the Torigian Life
Center in Peabody and is seeking new members. All are invited to come and
watch the team in action and consider joining. Each rehearsal, under the
direction of former Marine Carol Spencer, provides a mild workout, engages
the mind by requiring attention to steps and formations and establishes a
genuine sense of teamwork. There is a satisfying sense of accomplishment
that comes from finishing a drill all together and on time. The Team performs
to great acclaim at the PCOA annual shows as well as in other venues.
Experience the fun of marching in formation to the
stirring music of John Philip Sousa and consider joining!
There is no cost to participate, and membership is NOT
LIMITED to Peabody Residents. Bring your coffee and
enjoy watching the Team rehearse every Monday!
For more information, call Carol Spencer at (978) 531-1167.

February certainly was a harrowing month!
Keeping ahead of the endless snowstorms proved to be quite challenging and unfortunately, even with our best efforts, we lost five full work days due the wintry and despicable weather conditions! Our Maintenance Supervisor
Mike Callahan, basically lived here for three weeks, working around the clock in an effort to clean and clear the
premises with the bobcat and snow blower and salting the entrances, walkways and parking lots on an hour by hour
basis. Assisted by his guys Scott Hochman and Jim Downey, members of our staff, Washington Neves,
Gilberto DaSilva and April Lussier, he was able to shovel the roof, clear the multiple entrances, walkways and
sidewalks and salt the entire area to insure the safety of the Seniors that volunteer and frequent here.
Below are a few pictures: Picture One: Mike (circled) on our roof, Two: The Center buried under the snow
and Three: The severe build up of snow, ice dams and icicles all around the building.
Many THANKS go out to Mike and Crew for their hard work and perseverance!

A Message from the SHINE PROGRAM:
MEDICARE FRAUD AND ABUSE...
DID YOU KNOW…?
Over the past year, Medicare paid for health services for
approximately 512 million individuals at a cost of about
$604 billion. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
(CMS estimated that improper payments—some of which may be
fraudulent)– were almost $50 billion.
Fraud, waste, and abuse contribute to the rising cost of health care.
Taxpayer dollars lost to fraud, waste and abuse affect all of us.
You can help stop fraud and abuse by reviewing your Medicare
statement (Medicare Summary Notice—MSN) OR Part D
Explanation of Benefits (EOB) to make sure Medicare is not charged for
items or services you did not receive. If you have a question or
concern regarding Medicare claim, you should first discuss it directly
with your physician, provider, or supplier that provided the service.
Assistance is also available through the Massachusetts Senior
Medicare Patrol (SMP), which is a group of trained volunteers
who teach Medicare beneficiaries how to protect their personal
information, identify and report errors on their health care
statements and report fraud and abuse to the proper authorities.
You can contact the Massachusetts SMP Program
at Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley, 1-800-892-0890.
For further assistance with any Medicare issue,
contact the SHINE Program. Trained SHINE counselors
off free, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare and
related health insurance programs
To make an appointment with the SHINE counselor here,
please contact Maryanne Pierce at 978-531-2254 x 120.
You may also call the Regional SHINE office at
Mystic Valley Elder Services in Malden at 781-388-4845.
Please leave a message and a counselor
will return your call within two business days.

PEABODY COUNCIL ON AGING
CATHERINE MORROCCO SECRETARY OF
FRIENDS AND TRIAD REPORTS - APRIL 2015
April has arrived, look around, have you noticed signs
of Spring and other things? Perhaps this is the year
Mother Nature has a chance to say April Fools!
However, never fear, signs of Spring will appear, the
Birds will sing, Trees will have new leaves and the
Lilacs and Tulips and Jonquils will bloom. The days are
longer and will be warmer, but remember, Income Taxes
are due.
The Friends Board of Director express their
appreciation to all who have responded to this years
Annual Appeal for Funds. More than six hundred
have renewed their membership and or became new
members. Please keep them coming! Our goal is to
have 2,500 ‘Friends’ who support the Director and
her Staff as they provide services and programs to
enrich the quality of life for all Seniors who come to
the Peter A. Torigian Senior Center.
In the March issue of Tips & Topics the names of
all the volunteers who assisted with the mailing of the
Annual Appeal for Funds Packets were listed except
for Joe Mendonca’s name, Mia Culpa. Joe, I
apologize and please forgive me for the omission.
I truly appreciate the time you spend each year,
checking and counting every one of the Packets
before taking them to the Post Office to be mailed.
FYI: A delicious breakfast is available on Thursday
Morning, 8:00 to 9:30 A.M. for just $2.00. All Seniors
who come to the Senior Center on Thursday morning
to enjoy dancing and or to socialize and listen to the
wonderful music of the Golden Echoes Dance Band are
invited to partake and enjoy. Also, the delicious lunch
can now be purchased to take home, just put your order
in as you purchase your lunch ticket.
Triad Chairman Joe Mendonca and his Committee
are on the road again. Their Programs and a delicious
Lunch, provided by the Senior Center, was enjoyed by
the residents of Penelope Apartments who attended the
meeting.
All Seniors are reminded to update all their medical
information records, (especially any change of
medications) in the following places:



In your File of Life Pouch on the refrigerator door.
In your File of Life Wallet Size on your person.
On your File of Life Card in the glove compartment of
your car that has the ‘Yellow Dot’ on the rear window
GREETINGS OF THE SEASON.
ENJOY THE HOLIDAY !
