April 2015
MESSAGE FROM THE VMA PRESIDENT
Dear Association Brothers,
We have reached six months since our
State Convention at Roanoke with the
weather being nicer and the temperatures
much warmer back then. Ole’ man winter
will let go soon with creating changes to
each of our communities ahead.
From now until April 30, 2015, we have
to make some changes and create changes
in growing and multiplying our membership
and reaching Lodge goals.
Your Association and International, is
sponsoring five different types of membership campaigns: Back to the Basics Draw
Down, the District Competition Campaign
and the Region 2 Lodge Retention Program.
Please check these out on the VMA website
or at the Lodge with the Membership
Chairman, Governor, Administrator or
better yet, attend that Lodge meeting and
review the programs together.
Also, review International offerings of
“Back to the Basic” and the extending “King
of Hearts” programs that are rewarding to
you, the membership sponsors.
Supreme Council Lodge Grant
Program 2015 – 2016
Our Supreme Council will once again be
offering the Lodge Grant Program effective
May 1 and closing June 30, 2015. Administrators, please use the same format (Admin.
Menu) on the Moose International webpage.
However, attendance at the 2015 Nashville
Convention is required to qualify your Lodge!
The final grant approvals will be announced
toward the end of August. Please do not miss
out on this great opportunity to make Lodge
improvements for your membership to share
and enjoy for years to come.
I am personally counting on each Lodge to
report a member and send in its endowment
fund on time each month for the remaining
timeframe concerning this year’s District
Campaign.
We have a few Districts that have not
reached the goal of 100% reporting and we
have several that have reached it every
month. Congratulations to them! In closing, I
thank each and every one for your support
during the first six months of being your State
President. Together, we all can accomplish
many great things and make each of our Lodges a much better place for family, friends and
communities to fellowship. Your continued
dedication and fraternalism will be needed
and shared, as we complete this Moose year
and enter the next! Thank you good brothers
for being “Moose Proud” and getting “Back
To The Basics”.
Until our fraternal paths cross again, be
safe in your daily travels,
God Bless and see each of you soon!
Fraternally,
Rodger Huffman VMA State President
Cliff Merritt received the highest honor this year. He
was inducted into the Virginia Shaggers Hall of Fame,
Richmond Shag Club by the Association of Beach &
Shag Club DJ’s Hall of Fame.
Cliff has been a long standing
member of the Hopewell Moose
Lodge and beloved DJ.

Gloria Anderson (458-6519)
As our chapter year draws to a close, I am reflecting
back upon our term. Our membership campaign was
“Back To Basics.” Did we accomplish our goal? Did we get back to basics? The answer is yes. We were able to take a
step back, re-evaluate and focus on the basics. We were able to do that because of our strong network of Women of
the Moose. From our committee members, chairwomen, board of officers, to each and every one of our co-workers,
you are the reason for our success.
Many of our members (new and existing), have little knowledge of what the Women of the Moose stand for and the
causes we support. Somehow, we had started to lose our way across the nation. For this reason, our fraternity focused on our basic core
values and emphasized the principles upon which we were founded. “Faith, Hope, and Charity”, our emblem and mission to support children
& seniors in need; and giving back to the communities in which our lodges & chapters operate.
By working together as brothers & sisters, not only did we step back and re-educate ourselves, but we also worked to attract new members who believe in the same basic principles that inspired us to join the Moose. With the addition of cross sponsorship, our efforts to increase our lodge numbers were successful. By bringing back the joint orientation program, it will help to retain those new members and bring
a clearer understanding of our fraternity. Our endeavors to work together didn’t stop there, we also hosted a joint Christmas dinner for all
co-workers, volunteers and board members of the LOOM and WOTM. We joined hands with the Legion and co-sponsored a Christmas
Dance, and we worked together with one another to host our Children’s Easter, Halloween and Christmas parties, which were also open to
the community.
While many people equate the Women of the Moose with just bake sales (which we do), we are also so much more than that. This past
year, we not only held bake sales, we also sold home-made ice cream, spaghetti dinner fundraisers, cookbook sales, cup sales, and held 50/50
raffles every other Wednesday night at dinner services. We raised money by holding a Penny Auction, Chinese Auction, White Elephant Sale,
Rocking Chair Fundraiser, our annual Fall Bazaar, and our ongoing book sales in the lobby. We also hosted a Father’s Day Breakfast complete
with gifts of appreciation for the special father’s in our lodge and hosted a wonderful Valentines Dance.
We worked tirelessly to support our foundation causes; Moose Charities, Mooseheart- our child city and Moosehaven- our senior home
of contentment. For Mooseheart, we sent monthly contributions to our sponsor child, as well as additional birthday & Christmas gifts. We
even had two of our co-workers travel to Illinois to visit our sponsor child and the Virginia Home for girls at Mooseheart during the Christmas season. We contributed to the Mooseheart School Renovation Project and the Scholarship & Maintenance Fund. We supported our
“Sunshine Grandfather” in Florida with monthly contributions and special birthday & Christmas gifts and correspondence. Does it sound like a
lot of work? It is….but like the saying goes…”Many hands make light work.”
Closer to home, we worked collectively on many local community service projects. We donated and held basket raffles, we assisted with
funds and projects for Relay For Life, Special Olympics, Massey Cancer, The Va. Scholarship Fund, The Salvation Army, Hopewell Social Services, The After-Prom Committee, and the Appomattox Regional Library. The Senior Health Care Facility is one of our most heartwarming
local outreaches, and the joy that the seniors benefit from the monthly birthday party celebrations is immeasurable. We sing songs, serve
cake & ice-cream, bring presents and goodies, but oftentimes, it is the simple act of just holding their hand that brings the biggest smile to
their face. This past Christmas, we witnessed our own Christmas Blessing at the Moose. Our entire lodge, men and women alike, got together and purchased an entire Christmas wish list for two families of five children, and also purchased gifts for over 40 residents in the Senior
Health Care Center. The love and support demonstrated by our members was tremendous.
Throughout the continuous community service projects and fundraisers, many of our co-workers went the extra mile to earn higher degrees and awards. I would be remiss if I did not mention them, as they are the solid foundation for our new members to build upon, and for
our chapter’s growth. Several earned their Academy Of Friendship, Star Recorder Degree, College Of Regents Degree, Green Cap Of Honor, as well as a Red Stole Recipient. We even had two co-workers receive the “Shining Star Of Achievement Award” for the state of Virginia!
It is nothing short of amazing what our co-workers have achieved, and what our lodge has accomplished by everyone working together.
To all of our outgoing board members and committee chairwomen, THANK YOU! Thank you for your knowledge and guidance. Thank you
for your support and endless dedication. Thank you for helping our chapter get “back to basics” while reaching new heights. To all of our
new, upcoming board members, chairwomen, and co-workers, Welcome! We have the promise of a new year ahead of us, filled with great
opportunities.
So, while we can make a mean batch of brownies for a bake-sale…..we are much more than that. Please consider becoming involved with
your chapter. Come to a meeting, sit and talk with us, volunteer some time with us, we would love to show you what we are all about.

Trivia Night
Meeting twice a month on Thursdays at 7 p.m., Dawn Ozmore leads her team to try to stump
participants. Most months we meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday but check the calendar to make
sure as holidays may impact the date. Sometimes Dawn likes to play and hands the lead over to
Julie Andrews or Darrell Johnson. There's no cost to play and there's lounge food available as well
as drinks. Where else can you play a mental game while enjoying your favorite beverage? Even if you don't win
you're guaranteed a great time. If you're alone we'll find a team for you to join and otherwise there's no limit on
the number of participants.
Thursday, April 9, and Thursday, April 23 at 7pm, in the social quarters. Come early, grab your table
and order up some delicious food and refreshing drinks! Cash prizes, gift giveaways and Moose Bucks are
waiting for you!
No team? No problem! We have plenty of people you can share a table with! Just come out and have FUN.
There is no cost to play, and all materials are provided.

Moose Youth Awareness Scholarship Program
Heard of the Moose Youth Awareness Scholarship Program. NO! This is an excellent
community service project for our Lodge that is easy to do and is relatively inexpensive.

The Moose leadership is scratching its head. We know that our members enjoy country and western music because we hear it on the Juke Box. But when we have a country and western dance we
don’t get much response. We’d love to hear from you with ideas regarding how we could make
C&W dances more attractive. Speaking of dancing, please remember that the dance floor doesn’t
drink! That’s right. We ask that you keep the drinks at your table when you’re dancing. Liquids
spilled on the floor are very difficult to clean up because of the interlocking characteristics of the
floating floor and baby powder creates a slipping hazard to the unexpected dancers.

Kids Movie Night
at the Moose
Here we go again. Kids Night at
the Movies has taken off really
well, with the children and parents alike. The interest seems to
be growing for both. This month
come and enjoy "Paddington", a
modern day remake of the
"Paddington, The Bear" collection. This will be a great movie
for all. Enjoy popcorn and drinks while chilling on
the HUGE bean bags and comfy chairs. The movie
starts at 7:30 so come early for a good spot on
Friday April 24. Parents enjoy some adult time
while the kids get you out of their hair OR come on
in and enjoy the movie as well. Invite your friends,
cousins, nieces, nephews and even that neighbor’s
child that is always at your house. The more the
merrier.
Think this is a good program? Well, we could us
some help, so if you are interested in lending a hand
with this project please contact Brian Carpenter or
leave your information at the office. Volunteers are
appreciated and are a great asset to our lodge.
