Travelling & Living with the stars
I
never felt more sincere for me than
right now. The story of people can
be traced through their food. When
people move territories, the remnants
they leave can be tasted in the cuisine that transpires from the fusion
of native and influenced flavours. For
examples, African slaves were taken
to Peru in the 1500s. Because they
were moved over as unskilled work,
they couldn’t afford prime cuts of
meat and used offal as a protein staple. Skewered and grilled beef heart
(anticochos) is still eaten in Lima and
is considered to be the food of the
people. Few Africans remain, naturally, but their mark on the land is
seen in the cuisine.
n this monthly column, we chat
to some of SA’s premier personalities about their travel experiences and favourite local pastimes and haunts.
This week we catch up with MasterChef SA winner KAMINI PATHER,
whose new show ‘Girl Eat World’,
launches on Food Network, channel
175 on DStv, on Friday, May 15, at
8pm.
What is your favourite travel destination, and why?
From my travels on ‘Girl Eat World’,
my top three were Sydney, Tokyo and
Berlin. Sydney because the change
from British Colonial style food to
the Asian influenced cuisine is clear.
The change of the people of Australia
can be seen and tasted through the
food. It’s an insanely exciting time to
be Down Under.
Tokyo’s fast paced life, the bright
lights, the fashion-forward swag, the
clean lines and effortlessness that go
with being in that city won me over.
‘MasterChef’ taught me that simple
food is the most difficult to produce,
because there’s nowhere to hide.
Japanese food is simplistic and there
is a purity about it, because their
cuisine is based on sourcing the best
possible produce that results in the
best possible taste. You can’t really
get more honest than this.
The creative youth in Berlin believe that being in the food industry comes with a certain amount of
savvy. And they couldn’t be more
correct.
I met with a Korean Opera singer
who had followed a singing teacher
to Berlin. Fraulein Kimchi found it
difficult to make a living solely in
music and started a food stall at an
organic market in Kreutzberg. The
dish of hers that I adored was her
spaetzle (handmade german noodles)
with Emmental, crispy bacon and
kimchi. It’s the perfect balance between German and Korean food - yet
another example of how creativity is
king in this fine city.
What was your first international
trip, and what do you remember
most vividly about the experience?
This was definitely not my first international trip, but it definitely
included many firsts. I had never

travelled, while working, through
nine countries in nine weeks. While
it was one of the most memorable
and life changing experiences of my
life, it was really hard. Having said
that though, the amazing moments
always remain. One such moment
was in Dubai when I got to make a
sweet dessert called Kunafa. It’s one
of my favourites that I ate on a previous trip to the city. It’s a mozzarella
textured cheese topped with crispy
vermicelli noodles that are heated to
a crisp and drenched in sugar syrup.
It’s the perfect sweet-savoury dish
and I could eat it the entire day.
What is the first thing you usually
do when you arrive at your destination and you’re trying to get acclimated?
Get a sim card. I now have a box full
of international sim’s - it’s definitely
a must. Once that is done, one has
access to the internet, from which
all knowledge can be sourced. I love
the way access to digital enables us
to navigate a new city, to find places
through the internet or to even communicate with the locals through
translation apps. The internet is a
wondrous tool.
What for you is usually the best way
to soak up the culture you’re in?
Eat with the locals. The old adage of “you are what you eat” has

That’s like asking me who my favourite member of the family is. Food is
mood dependent and what my taste
buds crave right now is not what they
lust after tomorrow, or even in an
hour’s time. Some of the most memorable dishes were the pope’s nose

You’ve got exactly R48 in your wallet. Where do you go for lunch in
Cape Town, and what do you have?
That’s a tough one. When I’m in
Cape Town I can be found, as a rule,
on Bree Street. I love the vibe. I adore
the food. Those are my people. R48
may not get me very far on that strip,
admittedly. Perhaps I would go to
Jason Bakey and have a Hot Diggity
Dog, which is a cracker of a hotdog
in a pretzel bun with Jason’s relish
and a juice. I might also go to Max
Bagel - my heart melts for glistening,
shaped buns. Also, this is lunch, so
carbs are still allowed.
What is your specialty in the kitchen?
For a dinner party? Anything that
doesn’t require me to be in the kitchen the entire time. Slow roasts (beef
brisket in beer with crushed calumet
olives, garlic and fresh thyme) or participation meals like making fresh
pasta, are some of my favourites. I
too want to enjoy my dinner party.

Not having seen even the film version of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, I
had no idea of what to expect from
KickstArt’s production. Not to retread the clichés, but oftentimes,
not having any expectations, or
even lowered expectations, is the
best way to go into a show. As it
happens, this ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ is an absolute blast, boasting
quality at almost every turn.
Director Stephen Stead gave The
Next 48hOURS readers a fair indication recently of how much this
unconventional musical means to
him, and it doesn’t take a seasoned
theatregoer to notice how much
passion went into his production.
As one of my mates, a novice theatregoer, but already a seasoned
cynic, said on the evening, “It’s really good, isn’t it.” Yes it is, Nadine.
Not only does this ‘Little Shop of
Horrors’ possess charm in spades;
it also has some interesting subject matter at its core, which feels
particularly relevant in our media
drenched age of Elliot Rogers’ and
Gamergates. That the main character, Seymour, played with gusto by
Alan Committie, self-identifies as a
so-called “nice guy,” but justifies to
himself some pretty despicable actions along the way, would feel familiar to anyone who has spent any
time on internet message boards, or
a YouTube comments sections (or
simply watched the news, for that
matter).
“Fun”. That’s the one word the producers insist describes the pantomime, ‘Liewe Heksie: Flower Power’,
set to enchant all ages at the Bellville
Civic Centre from May 19 to 31, every
night at 7pm. (There will also be Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2pm
and 3pm, respectively.)
The ancient Romans contributed in a major way to the modern
world: cement, roads, clay brick ovens, central heating, newspapers, calendars, false teeth, cesareans, books,
etc. Luckily the Romans weren’t just
highly cultivated, they were also
known for their wild parties. And one
of their most joyful contributions is
the Pantomime. This one was written by Francois Toerien and Margit
Meyer-Rödenbeck of ‘Dowwe Dolla’
fame, with direction by legendary comedienne Lizz Meiring.
Alan Committie and Candice van Litsenborgh
The two standout performers
are rubbery faced Zak Hendrikz as
sadomasochistic dentist Orin Scrivello, and Candice van Litsenborgh
as beat down Audrey, who has suffered a plethora of abusive boyfriends in her life, but continues to
believe in the redemptive power of
love. Van Litsenborgh has always
been a winning presence in the
supporting roles she has most often
been cast in, but here she’s granted
the opportunity to show her range,
and does she ever take advantage of
the opportunity.
Special mention must go to the
builders of the props and puppets.
Everything has a marvellously professional sheen to it, and it completely enhances one’s immersion
in the 1950s pop culture infused
world of the musical.
This one’s going to creep into
your heart, so don’t miss it.

(2000), which marked the beginning
of his professional career, followed
by Janice Honeyman’s pantomime,
‘A Lad ‘n a Lamp’ (2000) and ‘Ladies
Night’ (2005). His hit musical comedy revue, ‘Mile High - with Cathy
Specific’ (2007) and ‘Mile High – the
JUMBO Package’ (2008) was the
start of his journey as Cathy Specific.

Brendan van Rhyn, most recently

Rhyn in the guise of Cathy Specific,
the 7-ft platinum blonde bombshell
that is his alter-ego. Ridiculously regal and instantly intimidating, Cathy
Specific is South Africa’s self styled
First Lady of Flying and everyone’s
favourite flight attendant.
This sassy stewardess lived in
Van Rhyn’s head for many years as
he himself travelled the world as a
cabin crew member for our national
carrier. Only through her, could he
marry both his loves in life – his love
for performing and his love for flying. Miss Specific is a familiar face
on the corporate circuit, including
big clients such as FNB, Vodacom,
Mr Gay South Africa and the Mr Gay
World Pageants.

‘The Pervert Laura’ follows
30-year-old Laura through a week
in her life. In conversations with her
therapist, an attempt at an affair in a
seedy hotel room, and through arguments with her family, Laura reveals
herself to be a woman on the road to
absolute self-annihilation. As secrets
are unearthed and accusations are
made and relationships are shattered,
the true source of Laura’s decision to
veer from the path society chose for
her becomes clear.

Music Exchange: Those unforgettable gigs

wo of the most powerful, positive catalysts in a person’s make
up are music and sport.
I bring up the point as a
friend of mine, Mike Greenaway, one of
the foremost rugby writers in South Africa (he wrote John Smit’s best-selling
book ‘Captain in the Cauldron’), wrote
a piece this week about my number one
passion, rugby.
He penned how the All Blacks (the
team I love and have been supporting
since childhood) lost a game against the
Springboks in 2006 in the less than salubrious surrounds of the Royal Bafokeng
Stadium in Rustenburg.
I was at the game with Mike and remember every last detail, including the
crazy after party, and it got me thinking about the parallels with great music
performances.
What musical memory do you have
that is as clear as daylight as that rugby
game in 2006 was for me? All the stars
aligned - the game was a truly memorable once-off, never to be repeated
in quite the same way again by those
world-class athletes.
Music and performance does the
same thing to the human spirit. Think
of that first slow dance, and the party
hits in your final year at school. Whatever the year may have been, those hits
and memories will always stay with you.
My question is, are those performances, the songs I talk about, a distant
memory due to way we consume music
nowadays? Or are artists in South Africa
not pushing the creative co-operation
button hard enough?
A selection of music shows that stand
out for me while I was growing up include Juluka at UCT’S Jameson Hall;
Stimela and Ladysmith Black Mambazo
on their ‘Unfinished Story’ tour; David Kramer at Red Level at UCT; never
mind the gigs at The Base, situated at
88 Shortmarket Street, where the likes
of Sakhile, Bayete, Don Laka and Basil
“Mannenberg” Coetzee played. Add Yossour N Dour, at the then North Sea Jazz
Festival at the Good Hope Centre; and to
top it all, Shaun Morgan from Seether,
at the height of his powers, doing a solo
acoustic show at Mercury Live to 500
people.
These shows I mention all had something special that captivated the audience and which are still talked about
today by aficionados who where happy
to be at the right place at the right time
(like my Rustenburg rugby jol).
Recently saxophonist Don Vino Prins,
who can blow a tune or two, impressed
me immensely, but he now needs to
find that original song to carry him to
a broader audience. Frank Paco is an-
other name, along with Buddy Wells and
Moreira Chonguica. These are just some
of the names audiences across the Western Cape should seek out and whose
music they should immerse themselves

Madame Zingara announces return to
Cape Town in new spiegelpaleis

couldn’t go any bigger, Madame Zingara, the popular
dinner theatre cirque spectacular, presents ‘The Celebration’,
commemorating their fifteenth year.
The showpiece will be performed
in a new custom built three storey
high Belgian spiegelpaleis called
The Queen of Flanders, complete
with new upper level balconies and
opulent interiors.
‘The Celebration’ will be the
largest touring dinner theatre of
its kind, offering a sensory experience on a massive scale. After fourteen months of pre-production, the
new show is expected to push the
boundaries of dinner cirque theatre,
with artists from sixteen countries
around the world represented in this
all new spectacular.
Gastronomes can look forward
to a specially crafted new menu,
taking the culinary offering up to
five lavish courses.
In partnership with Gearhouse
South Africa, advanced digital
sound, pyrotechnics and lighting
have also been added to the theatrics, taking the production to new
heights.

and Sensibility’, Alan Rickman directs

the romantic drama ‘A Little Chaos’.
The year is 1682. Sabine De Barra
(Winslet), a strong-willed and talented
landscape designer, fulfils her chosen vocation in the gardens and countryside of
France.
One day, an unexpected invitation
comes: Sabine is in the running for an
assignment at the court of King Louis
XIV (Rickman). Upon meeting with her,
the King’s renowned landscape artist
André Le Notre (Matthias Schoenaerts)
is initially disturbed by Sabine’s distinctive eye and forward-thinking nature, but
eventually chooses Sabine to build one
of the main gardens at The Sun King’s
new Palace of Versailles. Under pressure
of time and as she charts her own course,
Le Notre comes to recognize the value of
“a little chaos” in Sabine’s process.
While pushing herself and her workers to complete the Rockwork Grove as an
outdoor ballroom, Sabine negotiates the
perilous rivalries and intricate etiquette of
the court, going about challenging gender and class barriers.

17th-century set romantic drama ‘A Little
Chaos’, which is his second feature as di-
rector following ‘The Winter Guest’.
He remembers, “Alison Deegan’s script
landed unannounced in my letter box.
As I read it, I was struck by Alison’s
deep knowledge of the subject matter, by
her incredibly refreshing use of language,
and by her very personal take on the interplay between men and women.”
‘A Little Chaos’ re-imagines the creation of the Rockwork Grove, a unique

XIV’s magnificent Palace of Versailles. Le

brated architect, is tasked with overseeing

their respective visions of beauty for the
garden might initially be seen as contradictory, a true meeting of minds begins
to take shape.
“Any audience member will be able to
enter this story, whether knowing a lot
about the period or nothing at all. Some
of what we are dramatizing happened,
and some of it did not. We are looking at
history through a kind of prism.”
The screenplay’s key departure from
the historical record was in the creation
of the character of Sabine.
Producer Gail Egan offers, “The character of Sabine is what gives our film
such resonance. One of the things Kate
Winslet said when she first read the script
was that this was an incredibly modern
story, only set in a different period. Sabine takes on life, creativity, and emotions in a very modern way; we can relate
to her attitude, her pride, her pain, her
hopes and dreams, and her redemption.
“I’d worked with Alan when I was 19,
on Sense and Sensibility. We had always
remained in touch ever since,” says Winslet
“I knew that our friends Emma
Thompson and Phyllida Law had had a
wonderful time when Alan directed them
in ‘The Winter Guest’, so I was naturally
intrigued to join with him on this.”

uavas – Mother Nature’s
gift to us during winter –
is one of the most powerful and versatile fruits. An
excellent source of Vitamin C, Iron
and fibre, guavas are also rich in Vitamin A and B1. Guavas have three
times more Vitamin C than oranges,
almost 20 times more than bananas
and about three times more than papayas – just what we need when we
need it to ward off winter colds.
This high fibre winter jewel is rich
in essential nutrients such as minerals, potassium and magnesium, yet
it has a welcome low-calorie profile
which is great news if you are trying to keep those love handles at bay
during the long winter months.
Guavas contain both major classes
of antioxidant pigments, carotenoids
and polyphenols, making them a real
antioxidant powerhouse.
The versatility of guavas is endless. Gone are the days where guavas
were only considered good to eat
stewed with custard! We all know
that guavas can make wonderful
salsa or tasty chutney to jazz up any
meal, but guavas can also work well
in cooking with ingredients such as
fish or chicken. With guavas it is old
meets new in the kitchen when it
comes to savoury and sweet treats.
Try some guava chicken. It is so
easy to make - just pop the chicken
in the oven and glaze it with guava
nectar.
This is scrumptious and adds so
much flavour and versatility to that
ordinary Sunday roast chicken. Who
would have thought that you can
combine guavas and fish in the same
dish? Try cooking your fish in a delectable guava sauce, which you can
prepare from guava juice, spices, tomato paste and lemon juice. It provides the most unbelievable taste –
you will never want to cook without
guavas again.

Guava and Raspberry Fridge Tart
Serves 6 – 8
Ingredients:
Guava Raspberry Fridge Tart

1 x 200g packet Tennis biscuits
1 x 820g can guava halves,
drained but reserve the syrup
1 x 360g can caramelised condensed milk
375ml water
1 x 80 g packet raspberry jelly
250ml cream
Method:
Dip the Tennis biscuits into the reserved syrup and lie overlapping on
the base of a square or rectangular
dish. Pour the remaining syrup over
the biscuits. Combine the caramel
treat and 250ml of the water. Whisk
over low heat until the caramel has
melted. Add the jelly powder and
the remaining water. Mix well. Remove the pips from the guavas and
chop them. Add to the jelly mixture.
Leave to cool. Whip the cream until
stiff and fold into the jelly and guava mixture. Pour over biscuits and
refrigerate until set. Decorate with
fresh raspberries and chocolate curls.
Guava Chutney
Makes 3 litres
Ingredients:
• 1 litre brown vinegar
• 750ml sugar
• 500g onions, peeled and finely
chopped
• 2.5ml ground ginger
• 10ml cloves
• 10ml salt
• 5ml pepper
Guava Chutney
•
2.5 litres cooked guava puree
Method:
Heat vinegar in a stainless steel or
enamel saucepan. Add sugar and
heat until dissolved. Add onions and
other spices and cook for 20 minutes. Add guava puree and cook until
the mixture thickens. Allow to cool
slightly. Bottle in sterilized jars after
the chutney has cooled off.
Serve with fish, chicken and cold
meats. Ideal for browning oven
baked chicken.

Albert Frost Trio bring the blues
to the Northern Suburbs

he Albert Frost Trio (with
Schalk Joubert and Jonno
Sweetman) will be rocking
Die Boer theatre restaurant
in Durbanville on Friday, May 15, at

Frost is a familiar and respected
feature of the South African blues
rock music scene. For the past 20
years, the energetic performances
of this accomplished guitarist have
dazzled audiences as he deftly alternates between rhythm and lead,
while showcasing acoustic and electric guitars. His first love is blues,
stemming from the influence of his
long relationship with the Blues Broers, with whom he has performed
since 1994 – that’s a relationship
that has stretched for more than 20
years.
The Blues Broers have recently
become active again, releasing new
material in the form of albums ‘Out
of the Blue’ (2012) and ‘Into the
Red’ (2014.) The ‘Albert Frost Blues
Trio Live in Grahamstown’, recorded
in 2013 and released earlier this
year, reflects the magic of witnessing Frost performing with Joubert
and Gibson. Frost has recorded with
Arno Carstens, Koos Kombuis, Chris
Chameleon, Blues Broers and many
others. He has performed with every major artist in South Africa, and
Albert Frost
with international artists like Ali
Faka Toure and Finley Quaye. He
has toured with Simple Minds and
R.E.M., and supported the Rolling
Stones.

St Petersburg Ballet Theatre in
city to perform ‘Swan Lake’
The St Petersburg Ballet Theatre
(SPBT) arrives in South having received rave reviews and sold-out
performances in Paris. Returning to
Cape Town for the first time in eight
years with the world’s most loved
ballet, ‘Swan Lake’, two additional
performances have been added to
cope with the demand for tickets.
Performances are at the Artscape
Opera House from May 19 to 24.
The South African season is part
of a significant international tour
which includes Johannesburg, Cape
Town, Singapore, Perth and Melbourne that culminates in the UK
season.
“This global review gives South
African audiences an indication of
the treat that is in store for them.
The St Petersburg Ballet Theatre offers Cape Town audiences their first
opportunity in eight years of seeing
‘Swan Lake’ with its sumptuous sets
and costumes accompanied by the

different versions, the St Petersburg
Ballet theatre bases its staging,
both choreographically and musically, on the 1895 revival of Marius
Petipa and Lev Ivanov, first staged
for the Imperial Ballet on 15 January 1895, at the Mariinsky Theatre
in St. Petersburg. For this revival,
Tchaikovsky’s score was revised by
the St. Petersburg Imperial Theatre’s
chief conductor and composer Riccardo Drigo

New stop for Skateboarding
for Hope tour

he Skateboarding for Hope
community outreach initiative presented by VANS
has added a new tour stop
to its nationwide schedule. Skateboarding fans in the Western Cape
can become part of the excitement
when the road show slides into
Somerset West on Saturday, May
16.
The action will be going down
at the I2B Skate Park on the corner

of Hillcrest and Lourensford Road
from 9am until 5pm. Kids from the
ACVV Bright Lights children’s home
will attend the free skate clinic and
life skills workshop, while more experienced skaters can take part in
the contest.
The competition is divided into a
TopGrom division for kids thirteen
and younger and an Open division
for skaters aged fourteen and older.
The top three in the TopGrom division will earn product vouchers,
while cash prizes are up for grabs
in the Open division. Skaters also
stand the chance to qualify for a
wild card entry into the SA street
championships at the Kimberley
Diamond Cup Skateboarding World
Championships presented by Kumba Iron Ore that will take place in
Kimberley from October 7 to 10.
The Skateboarding for Hope
campaign is supported by the
Northern Cape Provincial Government and has been travelling
around the country for the past five
years to promote skateboarding as
