AEROPERFORMANCE THE 2016 DIAMONDBACK PODIUM A NEW IDEOLOGY. A NEW METHODOLOGY WHEN WE SET OUT TO DESIGN THE 2016 PODIUM, THE GOAL WAS SIMPLE: MAKE THE BEST ROAD BIKE POSSIBLE. THE DESIGN TEAM MADE A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO APPROACH THE PROJECT WITH AN OPEN MIND: ANY POTENTIAL INCREASE IN PERFORMANCE WOULD BE THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATED, INCLUDING IDEAS THAT BUCKED PREVAILING WISDOM. KNOWING WE HAD A SOLID FOUNDATION TO BUILD UPON, THERE WERE SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITIES TO ENHANCE BOTH THE PERFORMANCE AND RIDE OF THE PODIUM. BUILDING ON DISCOVERIES FROM THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SERIOS AND FEEDBACK FROM PROFESSIONAL RIDERS, THE 2016 PODIUM IS ENGINEERED TO DELIVER SPEED, PERFORMANCE, AND OUTSTANDING RIDE QUALITY. EXTENSIVE COMPUTER MODELING, WIND TUNNEL TESTING, AND REAL WORLD INPUT REVEALED NEW DIRECTIONS—SOME OF WHICH DID RUN COUNTER TO CONVENTIONAL BICYCLE INDUSTRY OPINION. THE DESIGN AND TESTING EFFORTS THAT WENT INTO THE SUCCESSFUL SERIOS PROJECT BLED INTO THE PODIUM’S DEVELOPMENT PROCESS, HELPING CREATE A WORLD CLASS RACING MACHINE. THIS PROVENANCE SHOWS IN TUBE SHAPES, AIRFOILS, AND RIDE QUALITY. THIS PODIUM IS INDEED A DREAM BIKE. AEROPERFORMANCE PARTNERING WITH TEAM OPTUM MANY BICYCLE MANUFACTURERS WORK WITH PROFESSIONAL CYCLING TEAMS FOR ONE REASON – BRAND EXPOSURE. HAVING PROS RIDING AND WINNING ON OUR BIKES IS NOT A BAD THING, BUT WE ENTERED INTO OUR OPTUM TEAM PARTNERSHIP WITH A MORE STRATEGIC GOAL IN MIND: MAXIMIZING PRODUCT PERFORMANCE. OUR ENGINEERING TEAM HAS MANY ADVANCED DESIGN TOOLS AT THEIR DISPOSAL (CFD, SMALL AND LARGE FORMAT WIND TUNNELS, 3D PRINTING), BUT NOTHING PROVIDES INSIGHT LIKE PUTTING A PROTOTYPE THROUGH ITS PACES ON THE ROAD. ENTER TEAM OPTUM. BY PARTNERING WITH TEAM OPTUM, DIAMONDBACK HAS ACCESS TO WORLD CLASS ATHLETES WHO SPEND EIGHT OR MORE HOURS A DAY TURNING THE PEDALS. THE PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCT FEEDBACK WE GET FROM THESE PROFESSIONAL RIDERS IS INVALUABLE, AND WE TRY TO INCORPORATE ALL OF IT INTO OUR DESIGN PROCESS. OUR ENGINEERS WORK CLOSELY WITH TEAM OPTUM RIDERS TO THOROUGHLY TEST FRAMES AND MEASURE HOW THEY PERFORM IN REAL WORLD CONDITIONS. AEROPERFORMANCE SERIOS IMPROVED AERODYNAMICS & COMPLIANCE PODIUM WHEN WE BEGAN THE DESIGN PROCESS FOR OUR GROUNDBREAKING SERIOS TT/TRIATHLON BIKE, WE TOOK A VERY METHODICAL APPROACH. WE DESIGNED EVERY TUBE AND SHAPE FROM THE GROUND UP, PAYING MORE ATTENTION TO RESULTS THAN CONVENTIONAL WISDOM. THE FINAL SERIOS OPTIMIZED AERODYNAMICS WITHOUT COMPROMISING RIDE QUALITY, AND THE RECEPTION TO THE BIKE HAS BEEN STAGGERING. WHEN PLACED SIDE-BY-SIDE, THIS PODIUM’S SIMILARITIES WITH THE SERIOS ARE APPARENT. THE PODIUM INCORPORATES OUR TT BIKE’S CURVED SEAT STAYS, WIDER AND DEEPER DOWNTUBE, AND SIMILAR AIRFOIL SHAPES. UPON EVEN CLOSER INSPECTION, ONE CAN SEE HOW EACH OF THE SHAPES HAS BEEN REFINED TO MEET THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF THE PODIUM. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE SERIOS IS TO CHEAT THE WIND. ANY BIKE CAN BENEFIT FROM AN AERODYNAMIC REDESIGN, BUT MULTIPLE DAY STAGE RACING HAS OTHER FACTORS TO CONSIDER. THE NEW PODIUM WAS ENGINEERED TO INCORPORATE AERODYNAMIC BENEFITS IN A BIKE DESIGNED FOR ALL-DAY RACES. WHILE WORKING ON THE DESIGN OF THE PODIUM, WE REVIEWED EACH TUBE SHAPE USED IN THE SERIOS PROJECT, AND LOOKED FOR WAYS TO KEEP AS MANY OF THE AERODYNAMIC BENEFITS AS POSSIBLE WHILE MAINTAINING RIDE QUALITY. WE APPROACHED THE FORK WITH THE SAME OPEN-MINDED PROCESS. GIVEN RECENT CHANGES TO UCI REGULATIONS WE WERE ABLE TO DESIGN A STANDARD FORK WITH THE SAME AERODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF AN OFFSET ONE. THIS, ALONG WITH OUR DECISION TO ESCHEW PROPRIETARY BRAKING SYSTEMS, IS IN LINE WITH OUR CREDO OF INCREASING USABILITY WHILE DECREASING COMPLEXITY. THIS PHILOSOPHY IS ALSO REFLECTED IN THE PODIUM’S STOCK STEM AND HANDLEBAR: WE FEEL THE ABILITY FOR A RIDER TO PERSONALIZE THEIR BIKE TAKES PRECEDENCE OVER NEGLIGIBLE AERO GAINS. ONCE OUR ENGINEERS WERE SATISFIED WITH THE IMPROVED AERODYNAMICS OF THE NEW FRAME, THEY BEGAN WORKING WITH TEAM OPTUM. THE TEAM WAS SENT PODIUM PROTOTYPES AND PUT THE FRAMESETS THROUGH THEIR PACES. BASED ON THIS RIDER FEEDBACK, SLIGHT ENHANCEMENTS WERE MADE THAT IMPROVED COMPLIANCE WITHOUT INCREASING AERODYNAMIC DRAG. THE NET RESULT OF THIS WORK IS A FRAME THAT IS 50% FASTER THAN ITS PREDECESSOR - SAVING A RIDER 100 GRAMS, UP TO TEN WATTS OF ENERGY - ACROSS ALL YAW ANGLES. THE PODIUM STAYS COMFORTABLE ON A SHORT TRAINING RIDE OR A GRUELING MOUNTAIN STAGE. AEROPERFORMANCE IMPROVED STIFFNESS WHEN DESIGNING A BIKE, THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF STIFFNESS TO MANAGE – VERTICAL AND TORSIONAL. VERTICAL STIFFNESS REFERS TO HOW COMPLIANT A BIKE IS. THE STIFFER THE FRAME, THE MORE RIGID AND JARRING THE RIDE. BY TINKERING WITH DIFFERENT SHAPES, TUBE SIZES, AND LAYUPS, WE FOUND A SWEET SPOT OF COMPLIANCE AND PERFORMANCE: THE PERFECT VERTICAL STIFFNESS. OUR ENGINEERS ALSO OBSESSED OVER TORSIONAL STIFFNESS. A FRAME THAT’S TORSIONALLY STIFF STAYS FLEX-FREE WHILE CLIMBING AND OUT-OF-THE-SADDLE SPRINTING. THE GOAL OF THE TEAM WAS TO DESIGN A BIKE THAT BALANCED VERTICAL AND TORSIONAL STIFFNESS, FINDING A REASONABLE BALANCE BETWEEN RIDE QUALITY, PERFORMANCE, AND AERODYNAMIC BENEFITS. ONE OF THE WAYS THE DESIGN TEAM WERE ABLE TO ADD STIFFNESS WAS THROUGH THE USE OF TRUNCATED AIRFOILS. THE LEADING EDGES WERE KEPT RELATIVELY UNCHANGED FROM THOSE OF THE SERIOS, BUT THE TRAILING EDGES WERE CUT SHORT—ABOUT 55-60% OF THE FULL LENGTH AIRFOIL. AS KEVIN QUAN POINTS OUT: “THE REMAINING 40% IS WEIGHT WE CAN SIMPLY DROP.” THE PODIUM’S WIDER AND SHORTER AIRFOILS MAXIMIZE STIFFNESS AND REDUCE WEIGHT. FOR THE PODIUM, WE USE A MIX OF MANY DIFFERENT CARBON LAMINATES. WE USE UNIDIRECTIONAL HIGH MODULUS 40T CARBON FOR STRAIGHTER PORTIONS OF THE FRAME, AND LESS BRITTLE 30T AND 20T FOR COMPLEX SHAPES AND AREAS WHERE COMPLIANCE IS MORE IMPORTANT. THROUGH EXPERIENCE AND MODELING, WE’VE FOUND A GREAT MIX OF WEAVES, LAMINATES, AND ORIENTATIONS THAT MAKES THE FRAME AND FORK FUNCTION AS A SINGLE COHESIVE UNIT. WE’RE NOT IN THE BUSINESS OF CREATING CARBON FIBER DUST COLLECTORS, WE ARE DRIVEN BY MAKING BIKES THAT BEG TO BE RIDDEN. THANKFULLY, OUR ENGINEERING TEAM WERE ABLE TO DRAW ON THEIR YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND DESIGN AND TESTING PROTOCOLS. COMBINED WITH THE INPUT FROM TEAM OPTUM, THE 2016 PODIUM FRAME IS STIFFER THAN ANY PREVIOUS INCARNATION, AND STILL COMES IN WITHOUT PAYING A WEIGHT PENALTY. THE BOTTOM LINE: THE 2016 PODIUM’S COMBINATION OF A LARGE (STIFF) DOWNTUBE AND A FULL ROUND 27.2MM DIAMETER SEAT TUBE (COMPLIANT), MAKE IT THE LIGHTEST, BEST RIDING, AND FASTEST PODIUM EVER. OUR BIKEOUR STORY THE DIAMONDBACK PODIUM COMES TO LIFE WE ARE IN FULL CONTROL OF OUR PROCESS FROM BEGINNING TO END. FROM PRELIMINARY SKETCHES ON OFFICE WHITEBOARDS TO THE HEAD OF PRO PELOTONS, WE STAY DEEPLY CONNECTED TO OUR BIKES. NO PART OF THE DESIGN OR MANUFACTURE OF THE PODIUM IS CHEAP OR EASY, SO WE MAKE CERTAIN TO BE PRESENT AT EVERY STEP. EVEN AFTER DECADES OF REFINEMENT CARBON FIBER BICYCLE CONSTRUCTION REMAINS DECEPTIVELY DIFFICULT. WITH THE VARIATIONS IN FIBERS, THREADS, WEAVES, AND LAYUP AND CURING METHODS, ALL CARBON BIKES ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL. WE’VE SURROUNDED OURSELVES WITH THE BEST MINDS IN THE BUSINESS, COLLABORATED WITH CUTTING EDGE FACILITIES, AND WE TEST WITH THE HIGHEST LEVEL ATHLETES. WE USE A COMBINATION OF UNIDIRECTIONAL AND WOVEN CARBON TO OPTIMIZE STRENGTH, WEIGHT, AND STIFFNESS. UNIDIRECTIONAL CARBON IS USED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, WITH WEAVES FOR REINFORCEMENT AND EXTRA STRENGTH. A FOAM CORE SUPPORTS THE PRE-PREG MATERIAL THROUGHOUT THE LAYUP PROCESS, AND WE USE A VACUUM SYSTEM TO ELIMINATE VOIDS AND EXCESS RESIN. PNEUMATIC INTERNAL BLADDERS, AN ADVANCED CURING PROCESS, AND WORLD-CLASS QUALITY ASSURANCE ROUND OUT OUR METHODS. MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY HAVE ADVANCED BIKE BUILDING OVER THE YEARS, BUT AT ITS CORE IT’S UNCHANGED. IDEAS BECOME BEAUTIFUL, RIDEABLE, RACE-WORTHY MACHINES. OUR BIKEOUR STORY THE DIAMONDBACK PODIUM COMES TO LIFE DIAMONDBACK LEVERAGED MULTIPLE RESEARCH CHANNELS IN DESIGNING THE 2016 PODIUM. FROM PROFESSIONAL RIDER FEEDBACK TO WIND TUNNEL TESTING, WE HAD LOTS OF INFORMATION TO SIFT THROUGH. AFTER KEEPING OUR MINDS OPEN AND CONSIDERING ALL THE INPUT - BOTH HARD NUMBERS FROM THE WIND TUNNEL AND REAL WORLD RESULTS RELATED TO THE MYSTERIOUS ART OF ROAD FEEL - THE NEW PODIUM WAS BORN. THE END RESULT IS A RACE BIKE THAT SLICES THROUGH THE AIR, STAYS STIFF IN SPRINTS AND CLIMBS, AND IS VERTICALLY COMPLIANT ENOUGH TO STAY COMFORTABLE ALL DAY. OUR BIKEOUR STORY DIAMONDBACK AMMP CARBON TECHNOLOGY THE DIAMONDBACK PODIUM IS HANDMADE USING OUR ADVANCED MONOCOQUE MOLDING PROCESS (AMMP). AMMP ENSURES THAT EACH CARBON PLY IS LAID PRECISELY WHERE OUR ENGINEERS WANT IT. THESE CARBON PLIES ARE HAND WRAPPED AROUND A POLYSTYRENE PRE-FOAM CORE, USING A PLASTIC BLADDER IN THE SHAPE OF THE PRODUCT. TO ACHIEVE A PRECISE MOLD DURING THIS LAYUP PROCESS, WE SURROUND THE EMERGING FRAME WITH A PLASTIC CAVITY, WHICH GUARANTEES A PERFECT FIT. SILICONE MANDREL SHELLS ARE THEN USED TO INTERNALLY REINFORCE CRITICAL JOINT AREAS, CREATING SMOOTHER OVERLAPPING FIBERS AT VITAL JUNCTIONS. FOR AREAS SUCH AS THE HEAD TUBE AND BOTTOM BRACKET, THIS IS IMPERATIVE FOR PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY. EACH SILICONE SHELL IS JOINED TOGETHER PRIOR TO PLACING THE PRODUCT IN THE STEEL MOLD. IN THIS FINAL MOLD, WE USE PROPRIETARY COATING FOR OPTIMAL FIBER ADHESION. OUR AMMP SLP FRAME IS THE ULTIMATE IN LIGHTWEIGHT FRAME CONSTRUCTION. WE USE A BLEND OF HIGHER MODULUS CARBON LAMINATES IN THE FRAME, ENSURING EVEN LIGHTER WEIGHT WITHOUT ANY EXCESS MATERIAL. THIS TECHNIQUE ALLOWS US TO MAKE THE FRAMES THINNER WHILE MAINTAINING AND INCREASING STIFFNESS BECAUSE OF THE ADDITIONAL MATERIAL PROPERTIES. IT’S THINNER, THEREFORE IT IS LIGHTER. OUR BIKEOUR STORY CLOSED CIRCUIT CABLING CLOSED CIRCUIT CABLE ROUTING PROVIDES A CLEAN AND SLEEK FINISH TO THE FRAME. ROUTING OF THE BRAKES AND DERAILLEUR SYSTEMS (BOTH DI2 AND CABLE) IS NEAR HIDDEN WHILE STAYING EASILY SERVICEABLE. CONTINUOUS FIBER TECHNOLOGY CONTINUOUS FIBERS ARE USED ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE STRAIGHT BLADE FORKS CREATING A STRONG AND STIFF FRONT END FOR INCREASED STABILITY AND CORNERING CONTROL. CARBON DROPOUT OUR IN-MOLD COMPRESSED CARBON DROPOUTS ARE BUILT WITH A REPLACEABLE ALUMINUM DERAILLEUR HANGER. THIS ENSURES A STIFF UNION BETWEEN THE WHEEL AXLE AND FRAME WHILE ALLOWING EASY REPLACEMENT OF THE HANGER IF IT BECOMES DAMAGED.
