The beautiful building which houses Newtownards Model Primary School received a
£5million refurbishment in 2006 which has transformed the school into a state of the art
centre for education.
A key priority in Newtownards Model Primary School is ensuring that all our pupils,
even our most able, are challenged to attain their full potential. To ensure this occurs,
all our children are closely monitored and any child who is underperforming at any
stage, receives tailored support. With the aid of computerised diagnostic testing, our
teachers have a very detailed knowledge of every child in their care and if required,
individual plans are put in place to ensure these children receive a boost to their
learning.
Another key priority is ensuring that our children are well ‘rounded’. We achieve this by
exposing them to contemporary and established teaching methods and by ensuring
they experience a wide range of creative, artistic, musical and physical activities, inside
and outside school hours.
Each child is valued as an individual and encouraged to acquire an acceptable code of
traditional attitudes, values and beliefs with ‘Respect,’ being a very strong focus.
To help develop our children creatively and physically, a wide range of clubs and
activities are on offer – Choir, Scripture Union, School Orchestra, Junior and Senior
Football, Art Club, Film Club, Basketball, Junior And Senior Netball, Boys Hockey and
Girls Hockey, Drama Club, Needlework Club, Cricket, Computer Club, Recorder Club
and Cycling Proficiency. There are also residential trips for our P6 and P7 year groups
as well as a number of educational visits for each class. Participation in these varied
activities and the wearing of a school uniform helps children identify with and feel part
of our school.
In 2008 Newtownards Model was the first primary school in Ireland to be awarded the
prestigious B.E.C.T.A award, which acknowledges the School as a Specialist I.C.T.
School.
Every classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and classroom
accommodation is augmented by a stand alone computer Suite (Equipped with 30

computers) along with art suite, library, assembly hall, dining hall, learning support
classrooms and offices.
We value the role of sport and physical activity in the development of our children and
our specialist P.E teacher delivers expert P.E. lessons to our P4-7 children. A plastic
multi-activity sports pitch on site gives our children great opportunity to experience a
variety of activities. To develop gross motor skills and to encourage health and fitness
children have timetabled access to an Activity Centre and Outside Gym equipment.
Apart from a vigorous P.E. programme, there are numerous After School Clubs and
very active soccer, hockey and netball teams. A swimming programme allows all our
P5-P7 children to receive swimming coaching for two terms. Lunchtime activities
allow our children to remain active and P3-7 classes can access timetabled football
coaching from an IFA coach.
Participation in music is also highly valued in our school and a specialist Music teacher
teaches music to all our children. In addition to our specialist Music teacher, children
have access to string, woodwind, brass and guitar tutorage and a school orchestra
provides our musicians with the opportunity to display their talents.
An Extended Schools Programme provides a Breakfast Club for P1-7 children and this
operates from 8.00am each morning. A SWAP Club supervises P1-3 children between
2.00pm and 3.00pm and this allows parents with older children in our school to make
one collection at 3.00pm.
The current teaching staff is made up of Principal plus 14 class teachers, 2 part-time
Learning Support Teachers, one specialising in Literacy and one in Mathematics and
our specialist P.E and Music Teachers.
Each P1 and P2 class has a Classroom Assistant to support the teacher while our P3-7
teachers share two timetabled Classroom Assistants.
Children from the locality and many families with a history of being educated at
Newtownards Model attend and enrolment is currently 405 pupils.
The Model Primary School is fortunate to enjoy the positive supportive role of parents in
all ventures undertaken by the school.
Concerts, special services, teacher/parent consultations and curriculum workshops all
benefit from the active involvement of parents, while a hardworking Parent/Teacher
Association provides a varied and worthwhile annual programme.
Many additional resources are purchased for the school through the financial
generosity of the PTA.
The members of the Board of Governors are keenly interested in all aspects of life at
Newtownards Model and actively support and appreciate the work of the Principal, staff
and pupils.

Number of days/Hours of work
8.1
a)
A full-time teacher, other than a teacher employed in a residential
establishment, shall be available for work on 195 days in any year of
which not more than 190 days should involve teaching children in a
classroom situation;
b)
A teacher, other than a teacher employed in a residential establishment,
shall be available to perform such duties at such times and such places as
may reasonably be specified by the Principal, or where he/she is employed
by a Board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school
by the Board or the Principal of any school in which he/she may for the time
being be required to work as a teacher, for 1,265 hours in any year
exclusive of time spent off school premises in preparing and marking
lessons and time spent travelling to and from the place of work;
c)
A teacher may not be required to teach as distinct from supervise children
in a classroom situation for more than 25 hours in any week in a primary or
special school and 23.5 hours in any week in a secondary school;
d)
Unless employed under a separate contract as a mid-day supervisor, a
teacher shall not be required to undertake mid-day supervision.

Staff cover
9.1
Supervising and teaching any pupils whose teacher is not available provided
that:
a)
In schools with an average daily enrolment greater than 222 pupils a
teacher other than a supply teacher shall not be required to provide such
cover after the second day on which a teacher is absent or otherwise not
available or from the first day if the fact that the teacher would be absent or
otherwise not available for a period exceeding 2 days was known to and
agreed by the employing authority in advance;
b)
In schools with an average daily enrolment of 222 pupils or less a teacher
other than a supply teacher shall not be required to provide such cover
after the first day on which a teacher is absent or otherwise not available
for more than 1 day was known to and agreed by the employing authority
in advance;
c)
In schools with a complement of 1, 2 or 3 teachers and in nursery units in
primary schools, a teacher other than a supply teacher shall,
notwithstanding heads (a) and (b), not be required to provide such cover.
Conditions of Service
The conditions of service for this post will be in accordance with the Regulations
of the Department of Education for Northern Ireland.

TEMPORARY TEACHER POSTS
Please note that the post availability indicates how long a post will be vacant at
the time of going to press and does not necessarily indicate the commencement
date of any contract. Temporary contracts may subject to extension or may be
reduced for any valid reason unless otherwise indicated. Certain circumstances
may arise where the successful candidate will not be employed for the full period
of availability eg. Due to incomplete pre-employment checks at the commencing
availability date.
Where a post is available for a full 12 month period and due to unforeseen
circumstances it is not possible for the successful candidate to commence their
contract at the availability date stated, the period of employment will be reduced
and the teacher will be paid on the hourly rate for teachers.
Temporary teachers employed for less than a 12 month period will be paid on the
hourly rate for teachers.

This appointment will be subject to satisfactory references being received. One
reference should be from a person who is able to comment on your suitability to

EDUCATION AUTHORITY
From 1 April 2015 the Education Authority (EA) has taken over the functions of
the South Eastern Education and Library Board.
All appointment processes completed before 1 April 2015 will be unaffected by
the transfer of functions to EA. All staff who were employed by South Eastern
Education and Library Board on 31 March 2015 transferred to EA on 1 April 2015
and are protected on their existing terms and conditions of employment, including
pension, in accordance with the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of
Employment) (TUPE) Regulations 2006.
