THE PRAYERS AND BIBLE READINGS
FOR OUR PRAYERS
COLLECT: Almighty Father, you have given your only Son to die for our sins and to rise
again for our justification: grant us so to put away the leaven of malice and wickedness
that we may always serve you in pureness of living and truth; through the merits of your
Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
GIVE THANKS FOR
» the communities of faith which have
encouraged and challenged you
» the witness of Christians through the
ages to the good news of Christ
FIRST READING
Acts 4.32-35
Pew Bible page 118
Acts recounts the history of the early Church in Jerusalem. It is not a complete account,
and it may be somewhat idealised. Nonetheless, it is clear that the first Christians saw
themselves as a community: believing together and living a common life, in which
possessions were held in common. The care for the needy would come to characterise
the early Church, although it is doubtful that the holding of all things in common became
widespread.
PRAY FOR
» a greater awareness of, and concern for,
the needy among us
» an increase in knowledge and love of God
» the peoples of Ukraine and Nigeria,
Iraq and Syria, Palestine & Israel; and
all seeking to end terror and conflict
» Owen and Camilla Khonje who were
married here yesterday
» those who worship at The Baptist Church
» Seekers (Sunday school) and its leaders
» those who live in Gallows Hill Lane (inc
Breakspear School), Garden Road and
Glenmore Gardens
SECOND READING
1 John 1.1-2.2
Pew Bible page 236
The community to which this letter was addressed was divided over the issue of Jesus’
humanity. Against those who asserted that Jesus only appeared to be human and to
suffer, the author attests that Jesus could be seen and heard and touched: that he was
truly human, as well as being truly divine. He showed the vocation of all Christians:
holiness, or perfect union with the Father. This is not something we can achieve by our
own efforts (‘if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves…’) but through the grace of
God offered through the cross of Christ.
GOSPEL
John 20.19-end
Pew Bible page 110
The risen Christ has appeared to a group of disciples and breathed the Holy Spirit onto
them, giving them peace. When Thomas hears of this, he doubts them, stating that he
will not believe what they say without seeing some evidence. On seeing Jesus, with
wounds that he could touch, Thomas makes one of the most complete affirmations of
faith that we find in the gospels: ‘My Lord and my God’. He has seen the risen Lord with
his own eyes; for those of us who follow, we must rely on the testimony of those first
witnesses so that we too may come to believe in Jesus and ‘have life in his name’.
POST COMMUNION PRAYER: Lord God our Father, through our Saviour Jesus
Christ you have assured your children of eternal life and in baptism have made us one
with him: deliver us from the death of sin
and raise us to new life in your love, in the
Heavenly Father
fellowship of the Holy Spirit, by the grace
of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Amongst the charities we support financially
and with our prayers, this week we pray for
the work of the Citizen’s Advice Bureau.
The CAB provides free, independent,
confidential and impartial advice to everyone
on their rights and responsibilities. They
value diversity, promote equality and
challenge discrimination.
Give thanks for the CAB and its volunteers
who help the 2 million people who turn to
them for advice each year.
