Amen. GIVE THANKS FOR » new life with God now, and the promise of his kingdom » the witness of the Church throughout the ages FIRST READING Isaiah 25.6-9 Pew Bible page 662 Israel longed for the day of the Lord: a time when he would act in power and glory and vindicate his people. For Christians that day has come through the resurrection of Christ. PRAY FOR » Sian, Emma and Mark, who were confirmed yesterday evening in the Abbey » reconciliation where there is division; hope where there is despair » the Church’s witness to our risen Lord » the peoples of Ukraine and Nigeria, Iraq and Syria, Palestine & Israel; and all seeking to end terror and conflict » Churches Together in Abbots Langley » Tiny Tots and its leaders » those who live in Gable Close, Gade View Gardens and Gallows Hill SECOND READING Acts 10.34-43 Pew Bible page 126 The resurrection of Christ is of a piece with his life, death and (later) ascension. Jesus’ whole life was about reconciliation - to God and to each other. Through defeating the power of sin (death), Jesus made it possible to know the new life of the Kingdom now. This is the good news he entrusts to his disciples. GOSPEL Mark 16.1-8 Pew Bible page 52 Mark’s account of what happened early on that first Easter morning is muted. It is not until later that a longer, and to our ears, perhaps more satisfactory, ending was added. Instead, we are left wondering: how were the women going to roll away the stone? Where are the other disciples? If we experience the shock of Good Friday, for these women it is Easter day that brings the shattering truth of new life. They were amazed and terrified, as well they might be: the empty tomb opens a future they had considered closed. It means that Jesus is the Christ, and that his words are true. POST COMMUNION PRAYER: God of Life, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection have delivered us from the power of our enemy: grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of Today love and resurrection his risen life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
