Circular No. 132/ 2012-2015
Date: 25/03/2015
Dear Comrades,
Unfortunate incident of suicide committed by Mr. Sohanlal Saini,
Officer at SBP, due to harassment of Management
The entire officers fraternity is shocked and outraged at the harassment meted out
to Mr Sohanlal Saini, a young officer of State Bank of Patiala, Rampura Phul Branch, which
drove him to commit suicide. These incidents are not isolated and are now being seen
across many Banks, due to the callous attitude of the Managements with utter disregard to
the aspirations of the officers who form the backbone of all these Banks.
We strongly condemn these heinous acts and warn that we will rise together as one
huge behemoth if such incidents occur in future and will leave no stone unturned when it
comes to the welfare of its members. We also demand speedy and appropriate action on
the culprits after dispassionate inquiry and call upon the SBP Management to take
remedial steps to arrest any such untoward incidents in future.
Yesterday, at 5.30 PM, flash Candle light demonstrations were held at all the Head
offices of the Associate Banks to condole the unfortunate death of Mr Sohanlal Saini.
ABOA Unit SBT express its sincere condolences and join the family members of this
unfortunate victim in their hour of grief.
We reproduce, hereunder, the text of ABOA Central office letter addressed to the
Managing Director, State Bank of Patiala, dated 25/03/2015, on the captioned subject

Dear Sir,
Re: Unfortunate incident of suicide committed by Mr. Sohanlal Saini, Officer due
to harassment of Management
The unfortunate suicide committed by Mr.Sohanlal Saini has come to the entire Bank
Officers fraternity in Associate Banks as a bolt from the blue shaking the morale of
officers all over. The sad news of death descended pal of gloom not only to his kith and
kin but has come as rude shock to all officers in Associate Banks exposing the gaping
holes in our HR System. The sad, untimely and tragic suicide of a budding officer has
nipped a promising career, aspirations and hopes built around his employment by his
parents. The incident has left deep scar on our functioning and is a sad reflection on the
efficacy of Management of Human Resources besides reputational loss to your
esteemed Bank.
The time tested methods of counseling is given a go by and Human Resources is being
handled like inanimate, life less objects. The efforts of time, energy and application of
mind that we are putting for upgrading non performing assets is hardly seen when it
comes to handling Human Resources. The Management, instead of motivating the
officers is resorting to deliberate demotivational exercise. It is high time that we feel that
we need to revamp and bring a paradigm shift in our HR Processes with the changing
environment more so against the backdrop of acute shortage of officers and mounting
pressures.
The ill-conceived policies have brought a grinding halt to the recruitments for over 2
decades of time. Of late, the recruitments has started only from 2010, with large influx of
young and a whole new generation of officers.
It is our failure to understand the hopes and aspirations of the whole new generation of
officers recruited now with whole lot of difference in their out look to life.
As such, we strongly condemn the lackadaisical and callous attitude of Management
functionaries whose actions and conduct have created compelling circumstances for an
young officer to take his life and urge upon the Management to take appropriate action
on the concerned officers after dispassionate inquiry and call upon the management to
take remedial steps to arrest any such future untoward incidents of this nature.
ABOA dips its flag in the found memory of Mr. Sohanlal Saini, the ill fated officer and
offer its heartfelt condolences to the members of their family. We request the
Management to give necessary courage to their family members to withstand the
emotional upsurge and to over come the grim reality of shock and dismay for this most
unfortunate mishap.
Awaiting your reply.
With regards,
Yours faithfully,
