The program integrates classroom theory with learning experiences in the community. Students are able to apply, expand and refine knowledge and skills acquired through a related curriculum course. These experiences assist students in exploring and preparing for future careers and in making a successful transition to post-secondary education, apprenticeship or the workplace. Cooperative education courses have three parts to them: pre-placement, integration and experiential learning. It is mandatory for students to attend inschool pre-placement days before the actual work experience begins as well as school integration days throughout the month of July. Students will complete an online course component as well as assignments related to curricular expectations. Due to the condensed nature of the course, it is expected that students participate daily so that course requirements are fulfilled. Summer co-op teachers will arrange all work placements for students. Every effort will be made to accommodate students in placements that are easily accessible by public transit. SHSM students’ placements will be directly related to their sector. Applicants Applications for Summer Co-op are open to all YCDSB students over the age of 16. Co-op is a necessary component in all Specialist High Skills Major programs, and as such, preference will be given to those applicants who are currently enrolled in SHSM.
