2015 Summer School Cooperative Education The Thomas Merton Summer School Cooperative Education Program provides an excellent opportunity to grade 11, 12 and adult students to earn a secondary school credit, while at the same time gaining valuable employment experience. Co-op placements are not guaranteed. It is highly recommended that students secure a placement prior to registering for summer school co-op. Locations may change depending on enrollment numbers. REQUIREMENTS All students must complete a summer school application form to be signed by their parent/guardian and their school guidance counsellor. Forms are available at your high school guidance office or online at www.mertoncentre.com. All students must provide a current Transcript or Credit Counselling Summary (available in your school guidance office). The Summer School Cooperative Education program is an excellent way for students to combine school based classroom learning with the opportunity to experience the practical aspects of employment and the expectations of employers in a changing working world. KEY ASSESSMENT TASKS Pre-Employment Classroom Component Interview with co-op supervisor (co-op placement must be approved) Prepare for work placement, begin development of PPLP (learning plan for placement), Resume, Cover Letter, Application Form, Safety Quiz, Ethics, SelfEsteem, Workplace Issues, Safety Presentation, Employee Rights/Responsibilities Report, Project and Presentation Integration Component Log/Journal with evidence of Learning, Exit Resume, Cover Letter, Reflective Learning Assignments, Research Project – Trends and Opportunities Placement Component Performance Appraisals by Employer/Co-Op Teacher Skills such as work habits, team work, organization, initiative and working independently will contribute to the student’s overall evaluation.
