About African Revival
African Revival is a growing, ambitious charity with around 20 staff based at offices in
London (UK), Gulu (Uganda) and Kalomo (Zambia). We believe education is the key to
overcoming poverty, and our vision is an Africa where every child has equal access to quality
education. Known for our holistic, responsive and innovative approach, we work with
primary and nursery schools in Uganda and Zambia, two of the poorest countries in the
world, to allow every child to fulfil their potential. We don’t just build classrooms, we
empower whole communities – pupils, teachers and parents – to transform government
and parent-run schools into thriving learning environments that build brighter, better
futures. Established in 2004, we are now looking for a step-change in growth in income to
deliver our strategic vision.
Job Purpose
We are looking for a passionate, motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team in
our field office in Gulu, to support us with writing funding proposals, reporting and
gathering content for our communications. Working as a team with another volunteer, we
are looking to give our beneficiaries an active role in our communications, and we need a
capable and independent volunteer to help us do that. We are also looking to make our
funding sustainable through repeat institutional funding. We are keen to foster a mutually
beneficial volunteering partnership, and for the successful candidate to help shape their role
description and also have opportunities to pursue their particular interests and utilise their
skills.
Responsibilities may include:




Supporting the UK and Uganda teams with funding proposal writing and research
Identifying in-country calls for proposals
Assisting in report writing for donors (individual and institutional)
Visiting remote project sites for content gathering – including taking high quality
photos and video; conducting interviews with pupils, teachers and community
members; gathering case studies





Writing engaging high quality stories for use across a range of outlets including our
website, social media, donor reports and proposals, newsletters and other supporter
communication channels
Conducting relevant research to strengthen our case for support
Working with the programme team to maximise future opportunities for content
gathering
Responding to ad hoc requests from the UK-based Fundraising & Communications
team for specific supporting content
Gathering stakeholder input as part of a brand strengthening exercise being
undertaken by African Revival in 2015
You don’t need to have an extensive background in all of the areas listed above, but
experience in communications and fundraising would be an advantage. A good eye for
detail, a creative flair and the ability to take high quality photos and video as well as the
ability to build rapport quickly during interviews is fundamental to this role. Any filmmaking, graphic and website design experience would be a distinct advantage. Knowledge
of, and an interest in, international development and education would also be a bonus. Ideal
candidates will be self-motivated, organised, dedicated and able to work efficiently on an
individual and a collaborative basis.
