Civic Engagement Van Driver
Position Description 2015-16
Civic Engagement Van Drivers serve a 1-year allotted term, mid-year review
permitting. Drivers are compensated at a pay rate of $8.00 per hour. They
report directly to the Van Coordinator and/or the CCE Assistant Director.
Generally speaking, drivers’ responsibilities include driving for OUr Atlanta
visits, transporting students to service projects, and participating in service
projects, as requested.
Position is open for general student employment & federal work study
General Responsibilities

Serve as a driver for CCE sponsored/affiliated events
Maintain an updated schedule of your weekly driving availability; communicate
availability changes directly with the Van Coordinator and/or CCE Assistant
Director
Communicate efficiently with CCE staff during a trip or service project; provide
updates, as requested
Ensure liability waivers are signed and collected from each passenger prior to
campus departure
Monitor gas levels of vans, record mileage during each use of the CCE vans
Specific Responsibilities
(1) Days of Service Each academic year, the CCE provides and successfully executes 4
campus-wide days of volunteer service. The CCE also provides smaller service projects
throughout the year.
As a driver you will:
• Transport student volunteers during Oglethorpe’s 4 major days of service:
Orientation Day, Atlanta Day, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and OU Day
• Actively participate as a volunteer in the 4 major days of service
• Attend Team Captain Orientations conducted by the Center for Civic Engagement
(CCE) Staff in August 2015
• Drive and serve in smaller service projects throughout the year
(2) OUr Atlanta trips These trips serve as cultural, social, and academic immersive
experiences into Atlanta. Some are designed to connect specifically with a course; others are
planned simply to expose Oglethorpe students to Atlanta attractions, conferences, and
lectures.
As a driver you will:
• Transport classes and instructors to various sites in Atlanta
• Communicate with CCE staff during trips, providing updates as requested
• Accommodate instructors as requested

Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
Must be age 21 by August 1st of the starting term

Must be in good academic standing; minimum 2.8 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale
Available to work for the CCE for the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters (August
2015 – May 2016)
Available to drive Fridays from noon to 5pm
Must have completed the 4 Civic Engagement Petrel Points graduation requirement
Strong knowledge of civic engagement and CCE projects & programs
Outstanding communication, creativity, flexibility, motivation, patience,
responsibility and time management skills

• Technical skills and certification in van driving through high-quality training and
road-experience
• Familiarity with Atlanta philanthropic, cultural, academic, and social spaces
• Leadership through facilitating service and class trips
• Communication skills with students, faculty, staff, and community partners
• Knowledge and background of signature non-profit partnerships
• Networking with signature partner leaders
• Understanding of various social issues and how they are being addressed
