Student Grants Silent Auction!
Please bring a basket or item(s) to add to the Student Grants Silent Auction. Baskets could be
themed on family or individual activities or focused on the area of the state where your
PTA/PTSA is located. Items can simply be an item something that others will want such as
books, gift cards, arts and crafts, gardening items, etc. During the convention, the Student Grants
Silent Auction will remain available for bidding until Saturday afternoon. Following the
Saturday’s afternoon break, successful bidders will be announced and return home with their
treasures acquired while supporting students.
The monies raised from the Student Grants Silent Auction are used to help students attend camps
and workshops during the summer and fall. Please look for the Alaska PTA Student Grant
application in your convention packet and encourage students to apply by the May 15 postmark
deadline. The application is also available at www.alaskapta.org and in the Alaska PTA E-News.
Last year, over $900 was raised during the Student Grants Silent Auction and was used to help
students attend music and sports camps from Nikiski to Fairbanks. Additionally, Randal
Buckendork of BP kindly donated $1,000 to the Alaska PTA Student Grant Program through the
BP Fabric of America program. BP supports their employee's community and nonprofit efforts
though the BP Fabric of America program, matching employee donations, volunteer hours and
fundraising efforts. Special thanks to Randal Buckendork and BP Alaska for this generous
donation and support of the Alaska PTA Student Grants program.
Finally, Alaska PTA Student Grants are supported by the proceeds from the Alaska PTA
Excellence for Children and Commitment to Children Awards programs. Please consider
honoring someone with one of these prestigious awards. Information can be found in your
convention packet and at www.alaskapta.org.

Don’t forget to visit the Exhibitor Hall!
Please take a moment to visit with the exhibitors who helped make the 2015 Alaska PTA
Convention happen. Without the financial support of sponsors, exhibitors and you – the Alaska
PTA Convention would not be able to provide this educational, leadership and networking
opportunity for local units and members.
Alaska PTA follows the standards of National PTA for fundraisers. The 3-to-1 Rule: For every
fundraiser activity, there should be at least three non-fundraising projects aimed at helping
parents, children, or others advocating for school improvements. Fundraisers can be necessary to
provide the money to complete the activities that will help a local PTA accomplish their goals.
Some of our exhibitors offer a chance to discover new fundraising opportunities.
Note: Updated guidelines to standards, the 3-to-1 Rule title & definition from

National PTA Reflections Program
2014-2015 Reflections Program Theme:
“The world would be a better place if ...”
Reflections, an arts recognition and achievement program, was established in 1969 by National
PTA Board Member Mary Lou Anderson. Since that time, more than 10 million students have
participated in the program; its longevity and participation figures attest to its strength. The
excitement and enthusiasm that the program generates for children, parents, schools, and
communities is unmatched. The goal of the Reflections program is to celebrate all children’s gifts
and talents, and to give children who have never tried creating a work of art a chance to
experiment. Reflections offers the opportunity for PTAs to showcase the importance of the arts in
education. The program can also enhance a school’s arts program by giving students a sense of
achievement and recognition.
National PTA believes all children deserve a quality arts education and encourages students to
pursue artistic expression through participation in its annual Reflections Program. Students in
preschool through grade 12 are encouraged to submit works of art in six areas: literature, musical
composition, photography, dance choreography, film production, and the visual arts (which
includes art forms such as drawing, painting, print making and collage). Students participate in
the Reflections Program by submitting entries to a local PTA or PTSA. Entries are first judged at
the local level, where selected works are chosen to represent the PTA at each subsequent level –
council, region and state. Once entries reach the state level, the Alaska PTA selects entries to
represent Alaska at National PTA. Awards of Excellence and Awards of Merit are recognized at
the annual National PTA Convention and displayed in a virtual gallery on National PTA’s
website.

for smooth transitions from high school to postsecondary education. Focus will be given to: Parent
Accounts, PLCPs, School Sort, Financial Aid Sort, and the Application Tracker.
102.
Smart Snack: Nutrition Standards for all Foods Sold In - This workshop will discuss the USDA
rules establishing nutrition standards for snacks and meal standards as a part of the policy
improvements enacted in the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Together, these improvements are
designed to promote a healthy school environment. Collectively these policies, and others, will help
combat child hunger and obesity and improve the health and nutrition of the nation’s children.

school diploma? How are industries like Alaska’s maritime, oil and gas, and healthcare, working with
the State of Alaska to help students become workforce ready? This session will provide you with an
overview of industry workforce development plans, and introduce you to some of the classes available for
those still in K-12 that help build students’ awareness and enthusiasm for the industries offering

Schools of Excellence - Unite Your Families and School… Walk through the process from sign up to
your celebration of this prestigious award. This workshop will help your PTA and school work together
to engage all partners in our children’s education. Through National PTA’s School of Excellence, your
school and PTA will work together to increase family engagement in student learning and school
improvements. Access all the tools you need to track the difference you are making at your school when
you partner with families. Research shows strong family-school partnerships make the difference in a
child’s education. No matter what their family income or background may be, students with involved
parents or caregivers are more likely to earn higher grades and test scores, attend school regularly, have
better social skills, graduate and go on to postsecondary education.
202.
The many faces of advocacy! - Advocacy was the cornerstone of PTA’s founding in 1897. Nearly
116 years later, we continue to fight for our nation’s children each and every day. Explore how PTA

today’s PTA advocate.

203.
Bylaws: Understanding, Reviewing, and Updating - Local unit bylaws outline the basic purpose

PTA run smooth and answer questions.

National PTA E-Learning - National PTA E-Learning courses allow you to gain the knowledge and
skills needed to effectively serve your community. As a PTA member, you have access to a wide selection
of online learning courses that allow you to develop the skills that matter most to you. Each online
course includes interactive activities and assessments to make the learning process more engaging.
National PTA E-Learning courses cover a wide range of PTA-related topics that help you be a better
leader.
301.
Learn about Boardman ship as an officer of your PTA/PTSA – The fundamental role of the board
is to govern. Although some responsibility can be delegated to officers or committees, ultimately it is the
board of directors that is responsible for the PTA. As stewards, the board has specific legal
responsibilities. Those responsibilities fall on the board as a whole - as a team - although every individual
board member is still responsible for ensuring the board fulfills its duties. The Duty of Care requires
board members to be reasonably informed about what the PTA does, to participate in decision-making,
and to act in good faith. The Duty of Loyalty requires board members to act in the best interest of the
association. The Duty of Obedience requires board members to comply with all local, state and federal
laws. Strong boards understand their responsibilities.
302.
Strong Public Schools through Educator, Parent, and Community Partnerships - Every school
has them: engaged, passionate parents who are great advocates for their children and public schools.
Some schools even have organized and highly functioning PTAs that effectively address school and
parent concerns. Imagine if every public school in Alaska had an engaged PTA that had effectively
engaged the community around the issues important to your school and students. This session will
cover information about the National and State PTAs, and will begin a dialogue about where local
PTA’s and the State PTA’s legislative priorities overlap. Members will learn how they can build a
strong partnership with educators, families and the community that will benefit the children and their
education.
303.
Financial Forum - IRS Workshop - Informed PTA Executive Board members play a crucial role in
maintaining the health of their local unit. This workshop provides information about what your local
unit board members should know to keep your local unit out of financial trouble. This workshop provides
valuable information about filing your annual taxes, preparing audits, what items are “red flag”
expenditures – which could lead the IRS to your PTA/PTSA?
304.
Strategies for Engaging your children or students - The goal of this presentation is to provide
teachers and parents with resources that will assist them in teaching their students/children the tools
needed to be effective learners and family members, therefore, helping them grow into effective members
of the community. This presentation will consist of a PowerPoint and lecture. Strategies presented will
include effective ways to: organize, study, take notes and maintain collaborative correspondence between
the family and school.
