St. Alban Roe
Catholic School eighth
graders have experienced an
Adventure In Medicine by
participating in a program by
that name.
Part of learning the parts of the
body, and in this case, the heart,
requires memorization, which is
hard—the vessels, the chambers,
the pathways!

But using an app called
ThingLink made it easier.
Students learned to label the
essential parts of a heart
diagram, attach videos of heart
sounds, vascular disease and live
hearts beating.
The experience of handling real
surgical tools and an actual
specimen of a heart took the
term “hands-on” to a new level!
Teacher Colleen Leahy
reported, “We learned firsthand why we will never become
couch potatoes!”
At left, eighth graders use the
NOVA Elements app
to construct 3-D compounds as
they begin to investigate the
importance of bonding in
compounds—ionic bonds,
covalent bonds, metallic bonds.
The next generation of
physicians starts here!

Four South City Catholic schools joined together for the first annual 7GP Poetry
Reading at Our Lady of
Sorrows Catholic
School. Seventh graders from
St. Joan of Arc, St.
Raphael the Archangel,
and St. Stephen
Protomartyr Catholic
Schools joined OLS students
to celebrate poetry and strengthen
community. Students from each
school read their own poems as the
audience snapped their fingers in
appreciation.
After a pizza lunch, the four winners of the 7GP Poetry Contest, a national
competition open to seventh grade budding poets, and established here in St. Louis
five years ago, read their poems. Each received a certificate and gift card for their
efforts, and in appreciation of their representation of their schools.

St. Charles Borromeo Catholic
School is rightly proud of third grader,
Kennedy, creator of Kennedy's Komfort Cases, a
non-profit effort providing children in need with
comfort and love.
We pray for the repose of the
souls of all the faithful
departed, and especially for,
Richard A. Lodes, (January 20,
2015) brother of St. Joseph’s
Academy theology teacher, Andy
Lodes (Katie) and St. Joseph
Catholic School (Manchester)
primary teacher, Karen Baerveldt
(Brad). Mr. Lodes was an alum of
CBC High School,
During Catholic Schools Week, each
school family at St. Charles Borromeo is asked to
create a Catholic
Heritage Project to capture
and embody the true nature of
Christian service.
Kennedy's project has
grown steadily, and keeps her
busy on weeknights and
weekends. Using financial donations from friends and
family, she carefully chooses material, sews a pillow case,
prays over the finished project, and sends it to a child who could use some comfort
in his or her life. Kennedy has a Facebook page dedicated especially to her
ongoing project, and was recently interviewed by ON-STL!

Students in Mrs.
Blankenship's third and
fourth grade class at St.
Anthony Catholic
School in Sullivan
created a quilt in honor of
Black History Month.
Each student chose and
researched a famous AfricanAmerican citizen, wrote a
short summary of his/her
achievements and
contributions, and drew a representation of the chosen person, which became one
piece of what became a quilt. After being on display for the school community,
this quilt will be sent to President Obama.
