Part of learning the parts of the body, and in this case, the heart, requires memorization, which is hard—the vessels, the chambers, the pathways! Students learned to label the essential parts of a heart diagram, attach videos of heart sounds, vascular disease and live hearts beating. The experience of handling real surgical tools and an actual specimen of a heart took the term “hands-on” to a new level! Teacher Colleen Leahy reported, “We learned firsthand why we will never become couch potatoes!” At left, eighth graders use the NOVA Elements app to construct 3-D compounds as they begin to investigate the importance of bonding in compounds—ionic bonds, covalent bonds, metallic bonds. Seventh graders from St. Joan of Arc, St. Raphael the Archangel, and St. Stephen Protomartyr Catholic Schools joined OLS students to celebrate poetry and strengthen community. Students from each school read their own poems as the audience snapped their fingers in appreciation. After a pizza lunch, the four winners of the 7GP Poetry Contest, a national competition open to seventh grade budding poets, and established here in St. Louis five years ago, read their poems. For three hours these third graders stayed in position until a museum visitor (students, parents, etc.) pushed a “button,” and the student stood up and “came alive” for one minute of history. Students and teachers of the Learning Center at Saint Joan of Arc Catholic School met St. James the Greater Catholic School eighth graders, Jordyn W. and Kiki L., at right, have been recognized by the Optimist Club as outstanding students of the year! Each honoree presented a short speech to the audience of proud family members, Principal, Miss Battaglia, Pastor, Father Dunlap, and eighth grade teacher, Mrs. Colvis. Ursuline Academy Archbishop Carlson (pictured at right) after a special Mass he concelebrated with eleven priests associated with the schools and centers administered by the Archdiocesan Department of Special Education (DSE). The Mass at the Church of the Annunziata was prepared by the students and teachers of the schools and centers of the DSE and attended by family and friends. Bishop DuBourg High School welcomed 18 new members to the Academy of Advanced Studies at the annual Induction Ceremony and Dinner. Over the last four years, students in the Academy have come from 30 area elementary schools. The purpose of the AAS is to provide students with a more rigorous program of academic studies. Members have extra graduation requirements and take enriched courses. juniors, Ann Homire, Caroline Adams and Hannah Banker received UMSL's College of Fine Arts and Communication Dean's Award for Creative Achievement in the Arts at a recent presentation held on the campus of the University of Missouri--St. Louis. Senior, Lauren T., delivered an inspiring speech about leadership to her Academy classmates at the dinner, and Bishop DuBourg alum and St. Louis Circuit Attorney, Jennifer Joyce, ’80 spoke to the students, as well. These awards recognize high school juniors who have displayed outstanding talent, leadership and responsibility in their school’s arts programs, and include a $1,000 scholarship to UMSL. —Congratulations! Eureka has received the Governor’s Choice Award in the Youth Art Month exhibit held in the rotunda of the state capitol. St. Mary’s High School senior, Joseph D. has received an honorable mention in the 2015 Missouri Scholars 100! Congratulations, Joseph! The artwork of William K., a second grade student at Most Sacred Heart Catholic School in The Youth Art Month exhibit and program is sponsored by the Missouri Art Educators Association. William used a variety of artistic techniques to represent vibrant poppies in response to Veterans’ Day, and the story of the poppies blooming in Flanders Field after WWI. William, received his award from Missouri First Lady Nixon in Jefferson City earlier this month. —Congratulations, William! Valle Catholic School “Warrior,” Aly B. got a special surprise this week when Valle “Warrior,” alum, Molly Rozier, M.D., ‘04, became Aly's doctor for the week of her stay at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital! Molly is in her intern year for pediatrics at Cardinal Glennon. She will be providing a caring touch at Glennon for the next three years. Around the Archdiocese... St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School is rightly proud of third grader, Kennedy, creator of Kennedy's Komfort Cases, a non-profit effort providing children in need with comfort and love. We pray for the repose of the souls of all the faithful departed, and especially for, Richard A. Lodes, (January 20, 2015) brother of St. Joseph’s Academy theology teacher, Andy Lodes (Katie) and St. Joseph Catholic School (Manchester) primary teacher, Karen Baerveldt (Brad). Mr. Lodes was an alum of CBC High School, During Catholic Schools Week, each school family at St. Charles Borromeo is asked to create a Catholic Heritage Project to capture and embody the true nature of Christian service. Kennedy's project has grown steadily, and keeps her busy on weeknights and weekends. Using financial donations from friends and family, she carefully chooses material, sews a pillow case, prays over the finished project, and sends it to a child who could use some comfort in his or her life. Kennedy has a Facebook page dedicated especially to her ongoing project, and was recently interviewed by ON-STL! —The future of the Church starts here! Notre Dame High School’s WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science Michael Corley, husband of former principal, Pat Corley. Mr. Corley served as principal at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in Washington, MO. (You may contact Mrs. Corley at 10 W. North Street, Eureka, MO 63025-1116 and Engineering) Team competed in the recent sectionals at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley, and proudly brought home the first place trophy with a team score of 496 out of 500! (WOW!!) Francis Einig, husband of Chris Einig, former Principal of Christ, Prince of Peace Catholic School, The team will advance to the April 14 state finals held at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla. This is Notre Dame’s fifth year of participation in the WYSE Academic Challenge, and their third trip to the state finals. May they rest in peace. Amen! Students in Mrs. Blankenship's third and fourth grade class at St. Anthony Catholic School in Sullivan created a quilt in honor of Black History Month. Each student chose and researched a famous AfricanAmerican citizen, wrote a short summary of his/her achievements and contributions, and drew a representation of the chosen person, which became one piece of what became a quilt. After being on display for the school community, this quilt will be sent to President Obama.
