April 2015 SCHOLARS GILD “Vaccines: A Look at Their Past and Future” Tuesday, April 21, 7:30 PM Bratten Room in Lower Gild Hall Please join the Scholars Gild as we welcome Dr. Laurence C. Eisenlohr of Thomas Jefferson University to our April 21 discussion of vaccines, their history and future promise. Vaccines have made an enormous contribution to the field of disease prevention since 1798 when Edward Jenner demonstrated that immunization with a poxvirus from cows protects individuals from smallpox. Through use of a similar but essentially benign virus, this horrific disease was officially eradicated from the human population in 1977. In the second half of this century, vaccine developments have led to significant progress against several infectious diseases. These include poliomyelitis, measles, rubella, mumps, cholera, pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus, rabies, and yellow fever. And finally, after over a century of trying, we are making headway with vaccines against cancers that are not attributable to an infectious organism. Progress in this area has been slower because the goal is much more difficult: focused attack against “self.” Headway can be attributed to a relatively recent shift from empirical to rational approaches in vaccine design. Dr. Eisenlohr will review these topics and attempt to give the audience a flavor for how his laboratory is contributing to even more informed and rational approaches to vaccine design. Dr. Laurence C. Eisenlohr received his BA in 1979 from Haverford College, subsequently earning a Veterinary Medical Degree (1983) and a PhD in Immunology (1988) from the University of Pennsylvania. Following post -doctoral training at the National Institutes of Health, which ended in 1992, Dr. Eisenlohr became an independent investigator at Thomas Jefferson University where he is now Professor and Vice-Chair of Research in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. He is also Co-Director and Head of Admissions for the MD/PhD dual degree program. The Scholars Gild discussions are held at 7:30 PM on the third Tuesday of the month (except July and August) in the Bratten Room, Lower Gild Hall. If you would like to receive e-mail notifications and reminders, contact the Scholars Gild via [email protected]. Title your e-mail “Scholars Gild Request” and include your name, comments, and request in the body of the e-mail. LIBRARY GILD Overdue Library Book Keeping You From the Library? APR 2015 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR 3 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Own a Piece of Gild Hall History For many years, a large antique Coca Cola Cooler has been in the Upper Hall next to the sink and refrigerator. The compressor still works and it cools. We need this space for our new range hood exhaust pipe for the renovated kitchen below and no longer have room for this historic cooler. In addition, we need funds for our Renovations project. This 1950s’ era cooler is available for sale for $1500. It is 6 feet wide, 29 inches deep and 3 feet high. It is red and white with raised Coca Cola lettering that say “Drink Coca Cola” on each side and “Have a Coke” on the doors on top. It also has a bottle cap opener. It has four doors on top that are removable to access the huge storage space inside. One door handle is missing but can be purchased via a website. The cooler was manufactured by Westinghouse. It is Model WH-22T and was one of the largest horizontal coolers made. It holds 538 bottle of soda. I have photos and the serial number. It is a great addition to a recreation room. If you are interested, contact me at [email protected] as soon as possible. If we do not sell the cooler by the end of April, we will offer it for sale to Collectors throughout North America in May. In addition, our two Garland gas range/ovens are for sale for a total of $600 or a reasonable offer. One of them has 6 burners, a griddle top and two ovens. The other has 4 burners and an oven. All burners and ovens work. They are 30 years old. They could be used at a hunting/fishing lodge and be converted to run on propane. The Garland range/ovens are available in mid-May. Gild Hall Renovations Fundraising Update Our campaign is going well but we still need MORE DONATIONS to fund this critical project. I am pleased to report that so far, we have raised $110,858. The list of donors since early January will be included in next month’s article. We are finishing the planning stage for this big project. Since we have a commercial kitchen, we need architect and engineering work completed to secure permits from the State Board of Health, Fire Marshal, and County Building Code Enforcement. Engineering work includes: structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing. The new range hood and fire suppression system have been designed and the new kitchen equipment (stove, ovens, dishwasher) have been ordered. Once the planning is complete, our General Contractor will be able to give us the final estimate for the entire job. Our last dinner this season is May 2. Afterward, we will move the equipment and supplies out of the kitchen, pantry, and Lower Hall so that the construction work can begin in mid-May and be completed before the Arden Fair in early September. We need to do this project NOW because the range hood and fire suppression system are far out of compliance with current regulations and would not have been permitted to operate much longer. In addition, the foundation of the lower level has issues that need to be fixed properly. Once we know the total cost of the project, we will move into our final fundraising campaign. Look for a fundraising letter in a few weeks. Please consider giving generously! We need to complete this critical renovation project this summer and cannot do so without your support! Remember that your donations are fully tax deductible. Steve Cohen, Arden Club President 4 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR APR 2015 CONCERT GILD WVUD 91.3FM Presents FATOUMATA DIAWARA with Kinobe and Jaja Saturday, April 11, 2015 - 8:00 PM, $25 General (Members $20) At the center of the music is Diawara's warm, affecting voice; spare, rhythmical guitar playing; and gorgeously melodic songs that draw powerfully on her own often troubled experience. Born in Côte d'Ivoire, raised in Mali, now based in Paris, Diawara has had a life covering a whole gamut of contemporary African experience. Lera Lynn at Gild Hall in Arden Friday, April 17, 2015 - 8:30 PM, $14 General (Members $12) Born in Houston, Texas, Nashville-based, Georgia-bred singersongwriter, Lera Lynn's music may be hard to categorize, but that is likely why she appeals to so many. While the music business likes to wrap everything up in neat little packages, that isn't always possible. Lera's music has frequently been filed under "Americana," "Folk," and "Country." XPN welcomes LOWER DENS with Thunderhank Friday, May 8 - 8:30 PM, $12 General, (Members $10) Lower Dens, the Indie shoegaze pop Titans from Baltimore have a new album, Escape from Evil, out 3/31. It's getting a lot of best of 2015 buzz. Delaware's own Thunderhank opens. Drummer’s Circle The Arden Drummer’s Circle, sponsored by the Concert Gild, meets every third Sunday of each month at 1 PM (generally running about 2 hours or so). Beginners and professionals alike are invited to join with us. We often play some common rhythms and then we improvise. Bring a drum or two, and/or percussion instruments. In fair weather, we meet outdoors of the Gild Hall, but in cold or rainy weather we move into the Lower Gild Hall. We also sometimes have one or two evening events during the year that often take the place of the monthly event. To join the e-mail list, send an e-mail to Allan Kleban, [email protected]. People on this list will be notified by e-mail if times or dates change, or if another performance in the Upper Gild Hall prevents us from playing. Also see our Facebook site, Arden Drum Circle, for more information. APR 2015 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR 7 ARDENSINGERS The Sorcerer Performances are fast approaching for our Spring 2015 show, “The Sorcerer,” which will be performed April 24 & 25 and May 1 & 2, 2015 at 8 PM and April 26 and May 2 at 2 PM. Stage direction is by Ryan Goulden, with music direction by Helene Furlong. Alexis, son of Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre, has lectured in many venues that true love should break down all artificial barriers, such as rank, wealth, beauty, and age, but the response of his listeners is a great disappointment. Despite the misgivings of his betrothed Aline, Alexis engages the great John Wellington Wells, from an old-established firm of family sorcerers, to work magic and bring the ideal of true love to reality. Topsy-turvydom ensues when Alexis extends his scheme to the entire village! This production will be set in modern times while still remaining respectful and true to this classic work. The major themes of the show related to social classes and expectations that “matters of the heart” should stay within one’s own class will be viewed through modern lenses by incorporating an ensemble of wealthy aristocrats, low-born workers, and traveling circus / carnival performers along with an element of spectacle and magic (both wonderful and cheesy) that will make this a truly special production. Tickets purchased at the door on performance dates are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors (65 and above), and $7 for children (17 and younger, or full-time students). Advanced purchase ticket prices are $17 adult, $14 senior (65 +), and $5 child/student (to qualify, payment must be received ahead of time). For more information about the show, to download a ticket order form, or to purchase tickets online with a credit card, please visit www.ardensingers.org.
