SHAKESPEARE GILD
King Lear Comes To Arden
June 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 26, 27 at 7:30 PM • June 14 at 5 PM
Frank Stephens Memorial Theater, Arden Delaware
One of Shakespeare’s great tragedies, King Lear has been performed for more than 400
years. It is a play about politics and family, but mostly about family. King Lear and his three
daughters make up one family; the Earl of Gloucester and his two sons, the other. Their
challenges and the decisions they make propel this riveting story, one that moves swiftly from the first
moments. Foolish and fatal choices are made, loyalty is tested, and chaos ensues.
Wilmington actor Greg Tigani takes on the role of Lear, a venerable king, whose mental and physical faculties
are taxed to the point of breaking. His world is full of steadfast friends and implacable foes; he rules a people
who look to the stars to define their destiny. Arden veteran Dan Tucker plays the Earl of Gloucester, whose tale
is ultimately horrifying and tragic. Wilmington brothers Rob and George Tietze play Gloucester’s sons Edgar
and Edmund, and Kerry Kristine McElrone, Emma Orr, and Lily Ozer appear as Lear’s daughters. The story is
timeless, the characters are unforgettable, and the outdoor stage with boulders and trees is perfect for a summer
evening’s Shakespeare encounter.
Performances are June 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 26, and 27 at 7:30 PM., and June 14 at 5 PM. Tickets for nonmembers are $12; for members, seniors and students, tickets are $10; for children under 12, $5. Reservations

Alvin Youngblood Hart Band and Damon Fowler Band
Saturday, November 7, 201, 8 PM
Tickets $23 or Members $18 - On Sale Now!
Alvin Youngblood Hart, described as the “cosmic love child of Howlin’ Wolf and
Link Wray,” is a master of the blues and beyond. He is a Grammy Award
winner, a WC Handy Blues Winner, and a two-time Living Blues award winner.
He has even won the Downbeat Critics' Award for Best Blues album. He
performs so much more than traditional blues, however, and with his scorching
trio, 'Muscle Theory,' he'll take you on a transformative musical journey that you
can dance to.
Whether with his own band, or as a member of Southern Hospitality, Damon
Fowler is a swamp blues-rock master. The contrast between his laid-back vocals
and his intensity on guitar has made him one of the most in-demand performers
on the blues circuit. Armed with an outstanding new album produced by Tab
Benoit, Damon brings his party-ready band to Arden. Dancing is suggested. We'll
provide the dance floor.

SCHOLARS GILD
The History of Etiquette: Why we do what we do when it comes to the social graces
Tuesday, June 16, Bratten Room in Lower Gild Hall, 7:30 PM
Please join the Scholars Gild at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, June 16, where we will be joined by
Ms. Lisa Strong Chase. Lisa will take us on a journey from the early customs of etiquette in
the time of Erasmus, through King Louis XIV’s court, where the word etiquette actually
originates. A bit of time will be spent on our first President, George Washington, considered
by many to be the father of etiquette and social graces in this country, as he wrote “Rules of Civility and
Decent Behavior,” when he was a teenager. She will also speak on how the social graces have changed over
time.
Although many people believe the social graces are passé and outdated, Lisa will use our journey to remind us
that a daily practice of good intentions, kindness, opening doors for other people, and showing signs of respect
for others is the basis of a good and decent society; otherwise, we would be hurtling faster into complete
societal upheaval and chaos. Through interactive exercises with the audience, Lisa will open the group to the
experience and provide an opportunity for discussion of social graces for today.
Ms. Chase is a native of Tennessee, who grew up in Virginia, where she graduated from Hollins University,
magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation, she moved to North Carolina, where she was a public
relations professional and free-lance writer. She earned her MBA from the University of North Carolina –
Greensboro. Ms. Chase spent 15 years working in North Carolina and in Virginia as a development and public
relations professional prior to moving to Delaware in 2002.
Building on a curriculum she developed of the importance of etiquette, Lisa became a licensed Junior Cotillion
Director through the National League of Junior Cotillions in 2005, and spent the next 8 years teaching more
than 800 elementary and middle school-aged children manners and the social graces, along with ballroom
dance (strictly for middle schoolers). In this capacity, Lisa became an award-winning director through NLJC.
Today, Lisa is the youth coordinator and educator for the Presbyterian Church of Dover; and she works with
non-profits in the areas of capacity building, grant writing, and public relations. In her free time, Lisa enjoys
being with her family and friends, cooking, gardening, ballroom dancing, Reiki practice, and meditation.
Drummer’s Circle
The Arden Drummer’s Circle, sponsored by the Concert Gild, meets every third Sunday of each month at
1 PM (generally running about 2 hours or so). Beginners and professionals alike are invited to join with
us. We often play some common rhythms and then we improvise. Bring a drum or two, and/or percussion
instruments. In fair weather, we meet outdoors of the Gild Hall, but in cold or rainy weather we move
into the Lower Gild Hall. We also sometimes have one or two evening events during the year that often
take the place of the monthly event.
To join the e-mail list, send an e-mail to Allan Kleban, [email protected]. People on this list will be
notified by e-mail if times or dates change, or if another performance in the Upper Gild Hall prevents us
from playing. Also see our Facebook site, Arden Drum Circle, for more

LIBRARY GILD
Three exciting new reads in the library…
The Precious One / Marisa de los Santos.
Booklist starred February 1, 2015 (Vol. 111, No. 11)
Taisy Cleary has spent the majority of her adult life estranged from her father, Wilson, a difficult, demanding college professor. Now
in her late thirties, Taisy is shocked when her father calls and asks her to visit. Is he trying to mend their relationship from his
deathbed, or does he have ulterior motives? Despite her twin brother Marcus’ misgivings, Taisy agrees to visit Wilson, his second
wife, Caroline, and their only child, 16-year-old Willow. Willow doesn’t know what to make of Taisy’s sudden appearance, which
coincides with her move from home school to high school, and she fears that Taisy will replace her in her father’s eyes. Meanwhile,
Taisy has fences to mend with her first love, Ben. De los Santos alternates between Taisy’s and Willow’s points of view, slowly
revealing a variety of family secrets. Tenderhearted, brilliant Willow has her own hidden concerns as a close friendship with a
teacher develops into a full-fledged romance that she is too naive to handle. Emotionally potent, painfully honest, and, at times,
delightfully funny, de los Santos’ (Falling Together, 2011) latest is a must for fans of intelligent, thoughtful women’s fiction.
The Alphabet House: A Novel / Jussi Adler-Olsen; translated by Steve Schein.
Publishers Weekly November 24, 2014
First published in Denmark in 1997, Adler-Olsen's debut is a very different sort of thriller from his Department Q series (The Marco
Effect, etc.): it recounts the harrowing odyssey of two British airmen shot down behind enemy lines during WWII and subsequently
held captive, under assumed German identities, in a hellish mental hospital for SS officers. Only one of the two can actually speak
German, and their struggle to survive electroshock therapy, experimental drugs, and brutal treatment from staff and fellow inmates
makes the first half of the book punishing reading. A long-deferred day of reckoning arrives for several characters some 30 years
later during the ill-fated 1972 Munich Olympics. Although the daring (if far-fetched) plot, sustained suspense, and caustic view of
society all hint at the author's later work, this meticulously researched historical journey won't be to every taste. (Feb.)
Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania / Erik Larson.
Library Journal February 1, 2015
Starred Review. When veteran captain William Thomas Turner accepted the pinnacle position within Cunard Steamship Company,
commander of the RMS Lusitania, he never imagined the danger that lay ahead. Bestselling author Larson (In the Garden of Beasts;
The Devil in the White City) traces the liner's final voyage by intertwining narratives of Turner with those of notable passengers such
as Boston bookseller Charles Lauriat, trailblazing architect Theodate Pope, and suffragette Margaret Mackworth. Hardest to shake
are descriptions of impulsive Captain Schwieger and his disheveled German crewmates torpedoing vessels, reveling in the shrill of
explosions; and imposing British spymaster Blinker Hall stealthily monitoring Schwieger's U-20 as it discreetly, or so it thought,
hunted targets. Rounding out the primary cast is a trio of political players: an ambitious Kaiser Wilhelm, a disciplined Winston
Churchill, and an infatuated (and ergo distracted) Woodrow Wilson. Using archives on both sides of the Atlantic, Larson describes
the Lusitania's ominous delayed departure and its distressing reduced speed. He vividly illustrates how these foreboding factors led to
terror, tragedy, and ultimately the Great War. VERDICT Once again, Larson transforms a complex event into a thrilling human
interest story. This suspenseful account will entice readers of military and maritime history along with lovers of popular history.
Also new are Blood on Snow by Jo Nesbo and Bittersweet by Susan Wittig Albert.
So stop in Sunday from 2:30 to 4, Tuesday from 5:30 to 7, Wednesday and Thursday from 7:30 to 9.
Regarding the upcoming Arden Fair, we ask that you hold ALL donations for the book sale until July and
August. With the extensive work going on in the Lower Hall we will not have access to our usual storage.
Thank you for your forbearance.

We will be holding auditions for leads and new chorus members for this panto
written by Stuart Ardern on Sunday, June 14 from 6:30-9 PM and Tuesday, June 16
from 7-10 PM. This British comedy is definitely NOT a silent pantomime! The story
of “The Panto of the Opera” revolves around Madame Zola, the new owner of the Paris Opera house, who
discovers that her premises are threatened with closure by a villainous English Lord, that she is under perpetual
scrutiny from a Health and Safety inspector, and that the Opera House is haunted by the mysterious Phantom,
who seems to be giving singing lessons to Christine, a newcomer. So make your plans now to come join in the
general absurdity of this delightful panto version of “Phantom of the Opera.”
Anyone wishing to schedule an audition should contact Nicole Servais by e-mail (preferred) at
[email protected] or phone at (302)750-4687. Additional information, including descriptions of the
main roles, and links to audition music and dialog, are available at www.ardensingers.org

PM. Stage direction by Ken Mammarella and music direction by Helene Furlong.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The Gild Hall Needs Your Help!
You have all received the latest fundraising letter for our largest and last major renovations project. Because
of the complexity of the project, it took a while to find out how much it all costs. We now have contracts
totaling $235,000 and the cost is rising because of the need to replace rotted floor joists. We have raised
$122,000 and still have a long way to go and not much time left. Construction began on May 13 and will be
done in August.
Please help by making a contribution today!
The Gild Hall needs a new foundation on the lower level as well as new flooring and a renovated kitchen. We
have come a long way in recent years in renovating the Gild Hall so that it is structurally sound, energy
efficient, much more functional as well as being more attractive. I hope that you are as pleased with the
results to-date as I am.
Once we finish the job in 2015, every single room and system in the Gild Hall will have been improved,
rebuilt, or replaced since the year 2000. Many structural issues have been discovered and fixed properly with
some expected to last for 100 years or more.
This renovation is only possible if we can raise the money. The Gild Hall is critical to the programs you enjoy
as an Arden Club member. Thanks in advance for your support.
