Quilts of Valor
Under Our Wings
Catherine Roberts began the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) from
her sewing room in Seaford, Delaware. She hit upon the idea that linking quilt-toppers with machine quilters in a national effort could achieve
her goal of covering all returning service men and women touched by
war. These wartime quilts, called Quilts of Valor (QOVs), would be a
tangible reminder of an American’s appreciation and gratitude. Since
2003, QOVF has become a national grassroots community service
effort, connecting the home front with our wounded combat warriors
and veterans.
QOVs are stitched with love, prayers and healing thoughts. Combat
troops who have been wounded or touched by war are awarded this
tangible token of appreciation that unequivocally says, “Thank you for
your service, sacrifice and valor.”

A Quilt of Valor is a generous lap-sized quilt made of quality fabrics
and beautifully quilted. After it has been bound, washed, labeled and
wrapped in a presentation case, it is ready to be awarded. The impact
it delivers is unequivocal. As one recipient said, “My quilt isn’t another
military medal to be placed in a box and sit on my shelf. I was moved
to tears.” Sgt. RC, US Army, Iraq ‘05
So the answer to “Why Quilts of Valor?” is, “It is a wonderful form
of national service and anyone can do it!” As of February 2011 over
37,000 quilts have been awarded, but many more are needed.
Under Our Wings is a program to team experienced and novice
quilters together to make a Quilt of Valor. Quilters Corner will be sponsoring three Under Our Wings workshops in May. We will provide
classroom space, coffee, tea, snacks, and dessert at lunch. We are
proud to be participating, and hope you will join us. Call the shop to
register for a workshop day as a coach or a novice.

BLOCKS OF THE MONTH
DOUBLE STARS
QUILTING SCHOOL
CELEBRATING COLOR
LESSONS FROM THE LAKE
We’re revisiting one of our most popular
block of the month series ever in today’s
fabrics. This pieced quilt is for those of you
who love every color in the rainbow. Each
month for nine months you’ll receive a packet
of bright batiks to complete this 52” square
quilt. Sashing, border, and binding fabric is
included. Pattern + kit $14/month, pattern
not available separately. Month 10 is a free
bonus packet containing sashing, border, and
binding!
It’s not too late to join! School started in February, so you’ll have only a little make-up
work to do. Increase your quilting skills with
this nine-month educational series. This quilt
is from the same designer who crafted the
Schoolhouse quilt that everyone loved and
learned so much from in 2009. Each lesson
presents a technique: triangle papers, freezer
paper, machine blind hem stitch, paper piecing, quarter square triangle and more. Eight
different blocks are presented with borders
and binding instruction in month nine. Kits
$14/month, pattern $6/month.
For a demo of the lesson and to see what’s
new at QC, join us the second Saturday of
each month at 9:15am. Those who attend this
optional meeting will receive 10% off all purchases for the day!

NEW BOOKS
NEW FABRIC
In Simplify, Camille Roskelley shows you how
to use pre-cut jelly rolls, fat quarters, and more
to add fresh, new style to your home. Enjoy the
simple things in life with colors and patterns your
whole family will love. We have two samples from
this book. Brynne sewed Dream Big in Moda’s
French General fabrics; it would look great in
anything from batiks to Jo Mortons. Kristin made
the baby quilt Little Man in girly colors.
By popular request, we now have a large
collection of Color Works premium solids by
Northcott. We started with 50 colors; we’ll have
even more by the time this newsletter is mailed.
Come in and feel them. We chose Northcott
for the superior quality of their cloth. Northcott
declares that it makes “Cottons that feel like silk”.
This spring will bring a whole line of reproduction
fabric designed by Jo Morton called Carolina.
Our collection of red, taupe
and tan fabrics from French
General will be refreshed
with our picks from two new
lines: Pom Pom de Paris,
and FaLaLaLaLa.
For children, we’re looking
forward to Eric Carle’s new
fabric, Grouchy Ladybug.
Other fabrics coming in are
called Cute as a Bug and Teddy B.
New lines that will be fresh for the season are
Hydrangeas, Just Wing It by MoMo, and Summer
Breeze.
Holiday fabric will arrive in May and June.
We’ve ordered several
advent calendars: angels,
trains, houses. Holiday
lines will include: Joyful,
Laurel Burch’s Holiday
Celebrations, Over the
River, Holiday Splendor,
Winter Magic, Kate Spain’s
Flurry, Ready, Set, Snow
by Me and My Sister.
We continue to keep our batik shelves refreshed
with frequent shipments. We tell the UPS man
that you eat fabric for lunch!

Quick to Sew Hostess Gift Ideas
Are you planning trips to visit family or old friends? You will need some
hostess gifts you can make in a hurry. Cyndi visited her sister-inlaw’s family in Japan earlier this year. She knew giving gifts is part of
Japanese culture. She needed a useful item that would be decorative,
quick to sew and not require much room in her suitcase. Cyndi decided
on place mats. She made sets of five because four is considered an
unlucky number in Japan.
Katie is always stitching some type of dog training aid. One of her
favorites is a dog treat pouch that can attach to clothing or a belt. (It
would also be handy for keeping tissues, lip balm, or small toys handy). She keeps several pouches
on hand for useful gifts for her dog training buddies, as well as an assortment for her own use. With
three dogs to train, she continually has some pouches filled with treats and some in the wash.
Linda is quite the cook and doesn’t go anywhere empty handed. She is skilled at throwing something
together to bring along. With her recent discovery of the Ten Minute Table Runner, she arrives with a
nice present as well as a dish to share.
Merrie and her daughter Autumn helped the Armstrong dance team sew cute lined bags to help keep
toe shoes clean or to keep costume accessories together. These bags have room to add a monogram
or an embroidery design. These simple bags are suitable for organizing sewing supplies, small items
in your suitcase, and many other uses.
Stop in to see these gift ideas and many others we have available. We have free project sheets with
the purchase of fabric for all of the items mentioned. We’ll also have free instruction sheets for more
quick-to-sew items at our Quick Projects to Make from Dish Towels event on Saturday June 11;
see page 7 for more info).
Rhubarb Coffee Cake
Linda has an almost unlimited supply of rhubarb in her spring garden. For this quick and yummy
recipe she chooses the smallest and brightest red rhubarb stalks and dices them into about 1” pieces.
Set oven to 350°. Grease and flour a 9”x13” pan.
1-1/4 C sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 C all purpose flour
2 eggs, beaten
1 C sour cream
3 C diced rhubarb
Crumb topping:
1 C sugar
1/4 C butter
1/4 C flour
Cinnamon for dusting
Using a large bowl, combine sugar, soda, salt and flour. Stir in eggs and sour cream until batter is
smooth. Fold in rhubarb and pour into prepared pan.
Using a small bowl and a fork combine the crumb topping ingredients until crumbly and sprinkle over
the top of cake. Dust with cinnamon.
Bake for about 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
