PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Things seem to be getting back to normal finally and I must admit most of us are happy with that.
The new toilet (next to the old one) is almost finished and the new painter's and craft groups cupboards are
finished. I must thank the tradesmen who managed to work on these projects under quite difficult
circumstances.
We are still having difficulty with our new phone system but I am sure we will solve it in time.
As usual the gallery is looking great and I notice a rotation of exhibited items which is fantastic. Thank you
all for your efforts and enjoy your crafts.
Finally, the June General Meeting is on the 9th of June. At this meeting we will be notifying you all that
two board positions will need to be filled in September at the AGM, one would require some accounting
knowledge. Please give these positions some thought as we need an effective Board to be able to look after
the running of the centre. More will be announced at the meeting.
Regards to you
all,
Paul Murrant
GALLERY MANAGER REPORT
The gallery is looking good with its "Outback" theme in the main gallery. We also have the winter goods on
display.
I would just like to remind members that all goods should be put on display through the appropriate
display managers only. Any goods put out by individual members are likely to be moved or removed. This
ensures that all members have an equal chance to have their goods attractively displayed.
Also, a reminder that we no longer use the bottom lock of the "new" jewellery display. This is because
many members could not reach down to lock and unlock the cabinet. However a couple of times lately this
lock has been accidentally pushed in, locking the cabinet. The key has now been left in this lock, so that all
can unlock the bottom lock if necessary. Please access the cabinet only using the lock in the middle of the
door.

works.
On the weekend 15-16th May, Tricia Reust
Thank you all, happy painting
conducted an acrylic workshop for about 12

members. It was about the use of all those acrylic
mediums we are aware of but never use.
Using two canvases, we made impressions,
poured paint, printed, stuck things to the surface
and out of that chaos we ended up with a
pleasing art work !! My two are hung on the wall
at home !!
Thanks to Nada and to Tricia for opening our
eyes

MONDAY PAINTING
We have had an exciting few weeks.
Congratulations to Nada and Geoff on their
secret wedding. This must be our first Wedding
in the Art Centre.
Our new store rooms are finished, a big thank
you to Robyn who moved the racks back in and
got the paintings arranged. The new painting sink
is up and running and all our supplies are in the
cupboard underneath. Please NO oil paint or
turps or acrylic paint down the sink and please
keep the area clean. We had a very interesting
weekend workshop with Tricia Reust, everyone
had a great time, and produced some spectacular
works of art.

GARDEN
We are slowly getting the storm damage to the
garden underway but the weather keeps foiling us
nevertheless we will persevere. With the 10th
Annual Camellia Show coming up 18th and 19th
July can I ask members to pot up cuttings that we
can put on garden stall for
sale. I have small pots
available if necessary. Don't
our red hot pokers look good
on the hill behind Westralia
Room.

WOODWORK
BONSAI NEWS
Shaping and pruning;
Some deciduous trees grow at an alarming speed
during the four to five month growing season, and can
easily grow completely out of shape in a very short
time. Conifers are normally very much slower
growers and are therefore not so likely to be in need
of drastic pruning at any time of the year. There are,
however, always exceptions to any rule, so keep a
close watch on all your Bonsai trees in order to
make sure that they do not grow out of hand. It is
usually quite obvious which shoots need pruning to
keep their shape.
We have started a program in which we are trying
to learn more about Bonsai.
Each fortnight we are going to study different trees
and their needs.
Wednesday 3rd June we are learning wiring for shape
over winter.
Thursday 18th June repotting deciduous trees.
Each news letter I will try to let you know which
lesson we will be doing.
This is not compulsory to join in, you can still do your
own thing if you want. Enjoy the art of Bonsai.

We had a successful visit from the Gunnedah
Woodworkers on Saturday, 2nd May. While
waiting for the Gallery to open at 10am, the
women accompanying the visiting woodworkers,
filled in their time in the workshop. Most of them
agreed that our set-up was great, and the morning
tea that followed broke all records for quality and
quantity.
For the Show and Tell segment of our May
meeting, Les Grumsen showed us a set of 24
pens, each with a different design and made from
a different timber. The result is a beautiful. Les
also made two clocks: the first has a Huon Pine
base with a top of Tasmanian Myrtle. The other
one has a Tasmanian Myrtle base with a top
made from Mahogany and soapstone.
Col Bridgeman showed us his latest cr eation
which is a box made from Huon Pine. It was a
beautiful creation and the grain in the Huon Pine
was a feature. Graeme Paul demonstrated his
skills with a simple shoehorn, made from three
layers of veneer. Rod Ryder’s fir st attempt at a
segmented bowl was well received. Well done,
fellows!
Graham Miller told those pr esent of his visit
to “Turnfest” on the Gold Coast earlier this year
and brought back some catalogues and brochures
for the Club. Turnfest is Australia’s largest and
longest running woodturning symposium. He
was very impressed with the organisation of the
event and described the quality of the turners and
their presentations as fantastic.

SPLINTERS from the BOARD
for the BOM Meeting held on the 12th May 2015
A copy of the draft minutes are displayed on the notice board in the outer office for your information.
Mathieson Constructions are nearing completion of the second upstairs toilet and redesign of areas in the
Westralia Room..
The design of the sign for the corner of Cultural Close and Shoal Bay Road is progressing. When finalised it
will be forwarded to Port Stephens Council for approval. No DA is required as it is under three and a half
square meters.
The trees and damage caused by the storm is gradually being rectified. There is one tree near the top of the
path to the pottery shed that is still to be attended to.
A resolve to our telephone and internet problems as a result of the storm are being sought.
It is respectfully requested that:Any additional electrical installations be requested through the Board and conducted by a Board approved
Contractor.
That none of our members give any instructions to Contractors or workmen conducting work at the centre.
A nominated Board Member or Special Projects Person is the only person to liaise with these people.
