Supplementary Literature and
the Advanced Suzuki Cellist
with Carey Cheney (UT)
Challenges sometimes present themselves to Suzuki teachers
when teaching young but advanced cellists. Strong
competency in music reading, and in ear development are
often issues in learning more advanced repertoire. It is
desirable to nurture a sense of inquisitiveness and a feeling of
optimism and confidence in exploring the unlimited
possibilities of being an excellent cellist. Having multiple and
creatively-conceived experiences with many contexts of techniques is helpful
for students to develop focus and attain high skill at this more advanced level.
This 10-hour course for Suzuki cello teachers will present literature and
strategies for integrating advanced techniques into Suzuki lessons, and also in
the development and presentation of Advanced Technique Classes for Suzuki
cellists. There will be much time for interaction and contribution by participants
with in-class demonstrations and presentations. Participants are encouraged to
bring their own materials and ideas to share.
Materials will feature the “Warm-Up Binder” that has five distinct sections of
supplementary materials and activities that give the advancing student extra
exposure to many contexts of shifting, vibrato exercises and contexts, trill drill
activities, thumb position and bowing exercises.
