Steuben County Arts Trail
Welcome to the 3rd Annual
Steuben
County
Arts Trail
W
elcome to Arts in Bloom, a county-wide open
Studio and Gallery Trail, where you get to meet
the artists, watch them create, and learn what inspires
their amazing work. The collective of artists who make
up Arts in Bloom is quite diverse and covers a broad
spectrum.
As a free community event, the goal of Arts in Bloom
is to make art accessible to the entire region, and to aid
in the understanding and appreciation of the art being
created in our own backyards. Through interaction with
the artists, our trail also endeavors to educate those in
attendance as to the creative and technical processes by
which art develops.
As you visit the different studios and galleries, you will
experience many different forms of art, much of which
is for sale. When you find that special piece, don’t be
shy about taking it home with you as a reminder of your
adventure on the Art Trail. And keep in mind, our artists
work all year long, and are happy to discuss personal
commissions or purchasing at any time with you by
appointment.
We hope the artists of Steuben County will inspire you,
and that you enjoy your time on the Arts in Bloom Trail,
and exploring the back roads of Steuben County.

One of the most interesting and exciting aspects of interacting
with artists is to watch them work. Demonstrating a wide variety

A retired public school English teacher, I took up painting
people, landscapes, and still lifes in oil seriously nine years
ago. I work on site and in my attic studio and find color and
composition endlessly fascinating. Happiness for me is the
ability to concentrate for long periods of time.

I’ve been painting a series of portraits placed in fantasy

Our Arkport home is a showcase for Jay’s paintings. Well
over 100 framed original oils
hang on the walls. Unframed
paintings, prints, and note
cards are also available. Sizes
range from 5”x7” to 22”x 28”
(unframed) and framed original art can be purchased
for $100 and up.
The paintings feature landscapes, still lifes, and a variety of other subjects that catch Jay’s eye, whether he
is here in New York State or traveling. Trips to Europe,
Maine, Vermont, Cape Cod, Florida, and Montana have
all yielded new subject matter for his paintings.
The first floor of the house is our gallery. Jay’s studio,
located on the third floor, will be open to Arts in Bloom
visitors. Additional paintings, as well as the opportunity
to see the artist at work, await those who wish to climb
the stairs. Demonstrations will be ongoing throughout
the day on both Saturday and Sunday.
Jay was raised in Hornell, taught English at Ithaca High
School in a previous life, and opened his studio in Arkport on his birthday in August of 2006. Painting for Jay
is his way of understanding and appreciating the world
around him, a way of slowing things down to observe
life more carefully.

Why Buy Art?

Why Buy Art?
Art Makes Memories
by Brett Steeves
Why should somebody spend money on art? Why is art
important? All artists eventually ask of themselves, “what
kind of value am I creating for other people?”
Many know why they make art. There’s not a shadow of a
doubt in their minds that what they’re creating is the physical
embodiment of their personal joy, spirit, and essence. But
why should somebody pay for that? What value is their art
creating for their collectors? Well, here are some thoughts on
the matter...
Art Transforms
Nothing can compare to art when it comes to instantly
transforming a space at home or at work. Weigh it out in
comparison to sitting in a room with empty walls and you’ll
quickly get a feel for how it breathes color and creative
inspiration into the space. The opportunity to be uplifted and
inspired this way is a great reason alone to collect original art!
There is no other like it
You’re buying something truly special. More and more of
everything in our lives is mass-produced. It has never been
more difficult to find unique objects to which we have a
personal connection. When you buy an original work of
art, you can be rest-assured no one else in the world owns
something just like it. There is only ONE original. How many
other things can you say that about?
artsinbloom.net
Giving or receiving the gift of an original piece of art is an
exhilarating experience that touches the heart. It spoils that
special someone by providing a luxury item that was created
by the hands of someone who cared about it. It most assuredly
was carefully chosen. It wasn’t plucked from a shelf next to a
dozen others just like it.
Personal Expression
Trinkets and mass-produced decorations are easily dismissed
as fleeting expressions of your interests, at best. When you
choose an original piece of art, you are “speaking out loud”
about your personal tapestry. The things that make you who
are and who you’d like to remember to be.
“Art helps you mind
the gap between
the life you are living
and the life
you dream of ”
