History
Radicalism in Canada's Twentieth Century
This course examines the history of radicalism in Canada. Students
will study the origins and the development of "radical" social
movements, labour militancy and domestic terrorism in Canada, and
they will explore how “state enemies” have been defined over the
course of Canada’s twentieth century. Other themes include:
espionage, counterintelligence, surveillance.(C)
Prerequisite: 12 credits in history including 6 credits at 2000 level.

European Nationalisms
This course will explore how nationalist constructions within Europe
were propelled or influenced by culture in the modern period. It is
hoped that this exploration will help students achieve a deeper and
more precise understanding of nationalism that will allow them to
situate it as both a cultural and historical phenomenon, as well as how
it informed some of modern Europe’s most salient events during the
course of the “long” European 19th century and beyond.
Prerequisite: 81 university credits. Reserved for students
registered in the Honours with specialization, Joint Honours or
Major in History.

Immigration and Ethnicity in Canada
This course will explore the history of immigration in Canada,
focusing on the period between Confederation and the Canadian
Multiculturalism Act of 1988. This course has been organized
thematically and examines issues such as historical trends, the
migration process, the immigrant experience, and domestic issues. By
the end of this course, students can expect to have a strong
understanding of the history and historiography of immigration and
ethnicity in Canada. Students will also gain a better understanding of
the sources used in immigration history, and gain experience
expressing their ideas in both formal and informal contexts.(C)
