“Proper Ergonomics and Preventative Exercise for
Common Interpreter-Related Injuries”

Professional Development Session: This workshop will discuss ergonomics and prevention of repetitive strain
for sign language interpreters. The presenter will emphasize the importance of proper sitting posture while
interpreting. Participants will learn about high risk interpreting behaviors, individually identify upper extremity
motor patterning tendencies and develop strategies toward overall improved body awareness for correction of
such when interpreting. Postural and biomechanical assessments will occur. Common interpreting-related
injuries will be discussed. This workshop will promote generalized wellness and instruct participants on specific
exercises as methods of prevention. For those already managing symptoms, there will be a show and tell of the
various night positioning splints available and discussion of other treatment interventions, if indicated.
The Presenter: Gretchen Roman, PT, DPT, OCS, NIC, CI/CT is an assistant professor in the Physical Therapy
Program at Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ, a video interpreter and an ergonomic consultant for
Sorenson Communications. She received her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Quinnipiac
University in Hamden, Connecticut, her Master of Arts in Deafness Rehabilitation from New York University
in New York, New York, her certificate in American Sign Language/English Interpretation from LaGuardia
Community College in Long Island City (Queens), New York and her Doctor of Physical Therapy via distance
learning at Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professionals in Boston, Massachusetts. Her
manuscript, “Workstation Ergonomics Improves Posture and Reduces Musculoskeletal Pain in Video
Interpreters” will soon be published in the Journal of Interpretation.
