CSI Baseball has speed, power
and pitching for the 2015 Season
Competing in one of the toughest regions in the country year in and year out can be difficult but rewarding. CSI Head Baseball Coach Boomer Walker hopes this year’s squad has everything it takes to battle for a
Scenic West Athletic Conference title.
Understanding the grueling season and the level of play it takes is key. So the fact that the Golden Eagles
return 10 players from last year’s squad will be huge down the stretch.
In addition to experience, this year’s team has speed, power at the plate and a deep bullpen with solid starters.
“The conference is very deep again this year,” Walker said. “Every team has the ability to win at home and
beat anybody, which adds a lot of parity to our conference. It should keep the race tight until the last week of
the season.”
On the mound, CSI will look to returning pitchers Braxton Deveraux, Tyler Burdett, Mason Hilty, Makay
Nelson and Zack Draper. The Golden Eagles will also have redshirt freshman returners Pat Machibroda and
Damon Jones. Newcomers include Trey Dennis, Parker Loutensock, Cole Skinner, Demetrious Small and
Tyler Coleman.
Behind the dish will be returners Mikey Ortega and Bodie Cooper as well as freshman Jordan Freese.
Sophomore infielders include Cody Schmidt, Cody Jenkins and Harrison Ramey. They will be joined by a
very talented freshmen group of Jake Boyd, Sam Gerhold, Ethan Ibarra and Cole Walters.
In the outfield, Walker will look to sophomore Dugan Shirer to lead a young athletic group of freshmen,
Golden Eagle
Baseball
2015 Outlook
including Nate Gardner and Quentin Marcelin, Kody Garvin, Joey Rossi and Cameron Coombs.
“One of our strengths will definitely be our pitching,” Walker said. “We have guys that have the ability to
throw a lot of strikes and not beat themselves on that side. As a whole our pitching staff is athletic and well
rounded. I would say we are competitive with a lot of experience.”
As far as position players and hitting goes, Walker said the team will have good foot speed and should have
the ability to put runs on the board.
“We are going to have to put pressure on defenses to generate offense,” Walker said. “We will also have the
ability to drive balls in the gaps and show occasional power.”
The winner of the Scenic West Athletic Conference will host the Region 18 Tournament. The winner of the
region tournament will host this year’s district playoff and the top two teams at the tournament will advance
to the playoff.

Boomer Walker
Head Coach
12th Season
It was only natural that Boomer Walker would someday wear a coach’s
cap at Southern Idaho. After assisting the Golden Eagles for nine years
Boomer took over as head coach in 2004. In those 11 years, Boomer has
amassed a 336 wins and just 246 losses. In 2006 and 2007, the Golden
Eagles battled for the regular season championship going into the final
weekend of play. In 2009, The Golden Eagles played in the Region 18
Championship and advanced to the district playoff.
Boomer was barely walking when his dad, former head coach Skip
Walker, started coaching at CSI. And Boomer has always been a part of
the program. He was a 12-year-old bat boy when he witnessed the Golden
Eagles’ national championship in 1984.
Boomer starred for Twin Falls High School, leading the Bruins to a
state championship in 1988. Then, he wore the gold and black himself
when he played at Southern Idaho from 1989 to 1992, winning all-region
honors as a shortstop in 1992. After playing at Northeast Louisiana
University, Boomer worked as a student assistant in 1995, gaining valuable
coaching experience.
In 1996, Boomer returned to Southern Idaho to re-unite with his father. The two still work together but Boomer is
the head coach and Skip continues as a hitting instructor.
Boomer said it doesn’t feel much different to be in the head coach’s shoes instead of assisting.
“I’ve been around here forever so it doesn’t feel any different,” Walker said. “I still feel pressure to keep this
program on top, but not any more pressure than before. I’m not naive to think I can accomplish what my dad did.”
As far as changes in the program, Boomer said they are very subtle.
“My overall philosophy of CSI Baseball is the same. People who have been around the program for a long time
won’t see a whole
lot of changes,”
he said. “I would
say the only
difference is that
my approach
is not as old
school.”
When
Boomer isn’t
coaching from
the dugout,
he enjoys
waterskiing and
playing softball.

President Jeff Fox
Dr. Jeff Fox was named the fourth College of Southern Idaho
President in October of 2013, with an official start date of January
2014. He started at CSI as an Associate Professor of English in 1987;
in 2006, he attained the rank of Professor of Merit. He received
his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in English from California
State University at Sacramento and his Ph. D. in Higher Education
Leadership from the University of Idaho (his 2008 dissertation was on
community college presidencies.)
From 1987 to 2000, he taught a variety of courses including
literature, humanities, composition, and Japanese language. Fox
was appointed as Director of the Academic Development Center in
2000, and in 2003 he became Chair of the English, Languages, and
Philosophy Department. Fox was selected as CSI Academic Teacher of
the Year in 1995, and he was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award
from the J. A. & Kathryn Albertson and CSI Foundations in 2000.
In 2008 after a national search, Fox was appointed Executive Vice
President and Chief Academic Officer.
He and Evin, his wife of 31 years, raised their two sons in Twin Falls.
Athletic Director Joel Bate
Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate took over Golden Eagle
Athletic Director responsibilities in January 2007.
Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived
on the CSI campus in 1993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with
student-athletes and coaches on a daily basis.
Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden
Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled
a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA
Academic All-Americans. Two players went on to play professional
basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy
Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors.
Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly
High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English
department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball,
track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place
state finishes.
Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State
University and his master’s degree in English at the University of Idaho in 1986.
Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls.
