An Australian charity creating and delivering innovative food education programs for children and young people with disadvantages, chronic illness, disabilities, mental disorders, and those who care for themselves or others. The Foundation exists as a not-for-profit health promoting charity in the form of a Public Company and has been endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office to apply charity tax concessions. As such, we are governed by our Constitution. The most important clause, establishing our goals, aims, objectives and direction is.... Our charitable purpose: • Promoting an understanding of food, health, nutrition and healthy food choices by children and young people in order to prevent and/or control childhood obesity and/or the diseases medically linked or associated with childhood obesity including, but not limited to Type 2 Diabetes, Asthma, Coronary Heart Disease and Depression. • Facilitating, coordinating and supporting the development and dissemination of information for the education of children and young people in relation to food, health, nutrition and healthy food choices; • Developing resources for use by children and young people who may be impoverished, sick or disadvantaged, or for use by schools or other relevant persons or institutions who can deliver food education initiatives which promote an understanding of food, health, nutrition and healthy food choices; • Monitoring, evaluating and disseminating research knowledge in an accessible form so that it can be better used by policy makers, practitioners and educators. Our audience In broad terms the role of food education is twofold - it can impart food based knowledge (including nutrition) and life skills, as well as providing a nexus for the integration of other learning. Food education experiences provide children with an opportunity to discover; reflect and understand about themselves, their peers and others within their community. Food education activities develop knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes required to make appropriate food choices in order to lead healthy, active and fulfilling lives whilst advocating a holistic approach by encouraging various concepts of food - physical, cognitive, emotional, social and spiritual. By implication, food education should be learned at home or at school, but what of those children who miss out because they are ill, have learning difficulties, or leave home. These are the children and young people we are primarily seeking to help and, to that end, we have identified our target audience as those children and young people who are: • Homeless, at risk or disaffected • Providing primary care for someone else • • Living in isolated or rural areas Living with mental illness or addiction • • Teenage Mothers Living with cancer or chronic illness Current Projects CanTeen We are working with the fantastic folks at CanTeen because their members are a group of young people who will benefit from food education initiatives specifically designed to promote and understanding of food, health, nutrition and healthy food choices. • • We are currently helping the national office and the member advisory committee develops a series of recipes and we have conducted cooking classes or food related activities for nearly all the State Branches. • The aim is to create facilitators manual for the camp coordinators and provide a database of willing food professionals who would like to cook with or for this special group of people. We would also like to help them find benevolent suppliers of organic and quality food products so their camp food is interesting and nutritious. • The resources we develop for CanTeen will also be available for use by anyone providing support services or those trying to engage young people. www.canteen.org.au Barilla • Barilla is celebrating its 130th birthday with the launch of an Australian celebrity cookbook. • Each time the cookbook is downloaded, Barilla Australia will donate $1 to our charity of choice, The Children’s Food Education Foundation. www.barilla.com Tasting Australia • The Children’s Food Foundation proudly supported the Learn about food for life!
