Meet the Swirly Girls, Susan Emory. Susan is a
fifth generation quilter, graphic designer, wife and
mother. Susan previously owned Quilter’s Corner
in Midlothian, Virginia. After designing quilts for the
store for many years, she decided to form a quilt
design business.
In 2008, I teamed up with Christine Van Buskirk to
form Swirly Girls Design. Christine’s engineering
background and attention to detail worked well with
my graphic design experience and artistic training.
Susan became the sole owner of Swirly Girls in
2014 and continues to design creative patterns
with clearly written and illustrated instructions.
Swirly Girls Design has been featured in several
magazines and my patterns are sold worldwide. In
addition to design, Susan has hosted many
Schoolhouse programs at International Quilt
Market and provide trunk shows and workshops for
quilt shops and guilds.
“Perfect Ten”, a lap size quilt made from ten fat
quarters, is my most popular pattern. In addition to
quilt patterns and books, she designed the
Monogram Buttons for Dill Buttons and have
collaborated on two rulers for Creative
Grids. Susan also designs fabric for Michael Miller
Fabrics and created the Clubhouse Quilt Club, a
progressive quilt program.
Susan is actively involved in the quilting industry, a
member of the International Association of
Creative Arts Professionals, a founding member of
Richmond Modern Quilt Guild and an Aurifil Thread
Specialist. Susan is excited about meeting us!
It’s going to be a fun-filled evening with Susan.

Quilts are awesome!!! On a bed, they keep us
warm, on the walls, they help design a room,
on a table they set it just right, around a
sleeping baby, it snuggles the baby oh so
gently, around a toddler, it gets pulled,
dragged, and lovingly overused. I’m sure you
can find more reasons why quilts are
wonderful.
I appreciate all aspects of quilting, and enjoy
learning all I can about the art of traditional and
modern quilting. Our February guest is Susan
Emory of Swirly Girls Designs. To follow her
theme for the evening, I would really like to see
your quilts, if you have made a Swirly Girls
quilt pattern, bring your quilt to show, whether
it’s a quilt top or fully complete, whatever size it
may be.
Join us to be inspired and to re-explore the
incredible art of quilting.
Our guild exists to promote and share the art
of quilting in whatever form the individual views
it as. Let’s celebrate, acknowledge and
explore all the different forms of quilting our
quilt guild friends have to offer.
We are all artists – our medium just happens
to be cloth.

Block Of The Month & Christmas Blocks
Page 4
Karen Elizondo
“Block of the Month” is a program we’ve had in our guild for years to introduce our members to new blocks.
Personally, creating a square in a square block intrigues and intimidates me. This is a challenge I’ll share
with the Guild. I’ll present a new block each month to challenge each of us. I’ll have two blocks in the
newsletter each month so you can work on the current month and the next month’s block if you like. Bring
your blocks to the Guild meeting each month to share your accomplishment and encourage other members
to participate. We’ll have a show and tell of sorts. I’ll present 12 different blocks this year that you can
make, or if you fall in love with just a few of them, you can make a quilt by repeating those blocks. You will
keep the blocks you make each month and at the end of the year, we’ll each have a new quilt. Use the 12”
directions for each block. To further my challenge, you can make two blocks each month. One in
Christmas fabrics and one in your choice of colors. The Christmas block can go to the Guild for our
Christmas quilts and you can keep your other block or donate it to our Service Projects. We can finish the
year by displaying our “Block of the Month” quilts for everyone to enjoy at our Christmas party. The
members can vote for their favorite “Block of the Month” quilt and the winner will get a gift certificate. We
will continue to put together Christmas quilts with the Christmas blocks everyone makes. Our Christmas
Party will be a double display of “Block of the Month” quilts and Christmas quilts with a drawing for the
Christmas quilts. Happy Quilting! Karen

BAQG is Celebrating 30 Years
1984~2014
BAQG is Proud to celebrate 30 years of Quilting!
Well the holidays are past now so it’s time to “get to work”. 2014 is a BIG year for BAQG, as we are
celebrating 30 years of stitching. Our celebration will be held Friday, May 2, 2014 here at St. Mark’s
beginning with dinner at 6pm. It will be an evening of FUN and we want you to plan on being bringing
family, friends and neighbors. This year the format will be much like the 2012 fundraiser:
• Dinner & Social time
• Door Prizes
• Brief History Program of the past 30 years
• Live Auction
• Fabric Basket Raffle
• Donation Quilt Drawing
Here is your hardworking committee for this event:

Dinner tickets will go on sale at the February guild meeting. The dinner will be ALL YOU CAN EAT
Spaghetti Dinner, which will include:
• Spaghetti & Sauce
• Tossed Green Salad
• Garlic Bread
• Iced Tea/Water
• Birthday Cake
Catering will be chaired by the incomparable, Bebe a.k.a. Barbara Sarria. Her team will be serving this
great meal for us. Dinner Tickets will be $10 per person and can be purchased from Pam Marek & Vickie
Ewell at the next meeting. Final sales for dinner tickets will be April 25, 2014.
Of course for any party or celebration, we need to decorate and Brenda Winfield has agreed to handle
that task. She did such an amazing job at the quilt show, this will be a piece of cake for her.
Lee Ann Adams has agreed to create a history display of the past 30 years with scrapbooks and photos.
If you have photos or history articles you would like to share, please label the back with your name and
bring to the meetings up until the April meeting. They will be returned at the conclusion of the evening
on May 2.

BAQG is Proud to celebrate 30 years of Quilting!
Jayne Clifton is has graciously agreed to be in charge of the Live Auction and once again, her entertaining
husband, Gary Clifton has agreed to be our Auctioneer for the evening so we know it will be a great time.
Donations are needed so while you are making something quilty this new Year…make 2! We need
completed quilts in all sizes and themes:
Bed size quilts
Wall hangings
Table runners
Bed runners
Miniatures
Baby quilts
How many of you are in a BEE? If you represent a local bee, we have a challenge for you. Gather your bee
members now, choose a pattern and get together and make a quilt for the auction. NOT a member of a
bee??? Then feel free to get a group of BAQG friends together and create one a work session to make a
quilt for the auction. I have a jillion patterns and I’d be glad to help organize a sew in. We will be
searching for quick and easy patterns with simple blocks and we can use help to create these quilts
especially for the auction. Watch the newsletter and guild emails for more information. The deadline to
turn in these completed items is April 25th. Invite your friends and neighbors and tell them it’s a great
time to get a hand crafted quilt and support our organization at the same time. It’s our goal to have 30
items up for auction.
We will be trying something a little different this year…instead of raffle baskets, this time we will be
doing FABRIC BASKETS. Annette Kuder has agreed to chair this position. We are accepting 100%
QUILT SHOP QUALITY fabric in a 1 yard cut. Your fabric donation can be any shade of the colors
requested, any size prints, stripes, polka dots or solids …we just want good quality and are aiming for 20
(1 yard cuts) of each color in a basket. BAQG members are known for the generosity when supporting
our guild and we look forward to what you will contribute to this cause. Go to your stash or this is a
good excuse to go check out the “sale” fabrics at your favorite shop. We have a little handout reminder
of the colors requested for you to take home and they will be in the newsletter as well. You are welcome
to bring any of the colors, even if the month has already come and gone, anything from the list will be
accepted up until the April meeting.
November-Brown & Tan
January- Blue & White
March-Yellow & Orange
December- Red & Green
February-Pink & Purple
April-Black & White (together in 1 fabric)
The finale of the evening we will be the drawing of the 2014 DQ. We have Jane Ott & Kathy Thompson
teaming up to handle the Donation Quilt Ticket Sales this year. The 2014 Donation Quilt will be hitting
the road to travel to area guilds, quilt shops and social events. It’s imperative we take our quilt to as
many places possible. If you could please just give of your time taking our quilt around, see Jane to get
on the schedule. We need held in the following places:
February 5 @ 7pm- Coastal Prairie Guild
March 15 @ 9am-Cactus Quilts Saturday Sampler
March 17 @ 7 pm- Lakeview Quilters
March 19 @ 7 pm-West Houston Quilt Guild
March 28 & 29-Bay Area Shop Hop
April 26-San Jacinto Day @ The Monument
As a reminder, it’s part of your membership responsibility to sell or buy $25 worth of tickets…You actually
get 30 tickets in a packet as they are $1 each or 6/$5. If we all do our duty, according to last years
membership records, I think we were close to 100 members. If each member would just sell or buy their
allotted tickets; that would be an easy $2500 in sales.
There are many more jobs to prepare and execute this special evening of celebration. Please say YES when
called upon to help. Together we can make this a successful night of fundraising while we celebrate 30 years
of QUILTING.

Block Makers Needed
Lisa Green
The Patchwork Pipeline BAQG
Page 8
30th Anniversary Celebration and Fundraiser. We need
YOU to donate blocks to create this awesome SCRAPPY
quilt. It’s just simple 4 patches and half square triangles
that is made of 2 blocks. You may make as many as you
wish: we need 50 of each block. Any extras will be
packaged and all participants will be eligible to win the
extra ones. Just be sure to put you name on your bag when
you turn in your blocks. For better accuracy, make them
oversize then trim to finished size. You can turn your
blocks in at the February meeting but the absolute
deadline to turn in blocks is March 3rd. Limited copies of
this pattern available at the February meeting.
We want this as scrappy as we can get it. We are
requesting fabrics for tone on tone creams, beiges, tans
using small scale prints or shirtings. Just make sure you
use lights and darks in the four patches have a good
contrast…medium dark fabrics may be used for the half
square triangles.
Making the 4 patch units
• For 1 four patch, cut (1) 2-1/2” x 5-1/2” rectangle from a light fabric cut (1)
2 ½ x 5½” rectangle from a dark fabric. Sew a light to a dark along the long
sides using a scant ¼” seam allowance. Press towards the dark fabric.
• Cut the strip set into (2) 2 ½” segments. Place the segments right sides
together with seams butting up. Pin at the seam to secure and sew
together. Press seams open. Repeat for the 2nd four patch block using
different fabrics.
Making the Half Square Triangle (HST) Units
You will need (1) 5¼” light & (1) 5¼” dark square (good contrast is important).
Lay the dark fabric right side up on the ironing board…spray with starch. Lay the
light fabric on top of the dark one, aligning the edges and press. The pairs should
now be smooth, crisp and lightly stuck together and ready to sew. Draw a diagonal
line down the center. Sew ¼ “ away from drawn line on both sides of line. Cut on
the drawn line. Press towards the dark. Square your 2 HST to 4-1/2”. These will be
for Block A…repeat this step with different fabric for Block B.
BE SURE YOU PLACE THE LIGHTS & DARKS IN THE CORRECT POSITION!!!
UNFINISHED BLOCK SIZE-8 ½” SQUARE

Thank you to everyone who made a block for Kathy Thompson’s
President’s block. 12 beautiful blocks were turned in at the January
meeting. We now have 19 blocks! Seventy-two blocks are needed to
make this quilt. Let’s keep making blocks.
We no longer have the brown fabric for the stem but you can purchase
it unless you have it in your stash. The brown fabric is a Kona Solid
brown. If anyone needs instructions, Connie Schofield can email it to
you. There will be no instructions available at our next guild meeting.
The leaf colors can be green, yellow, red, pink, gold or brown
indicating Fall, Summer, Spring or Winter seasons.
Please submit your blocks to Tracy Williams by mail (do not use the
address in last year’s directory) or at our guild meeting. If you decide
to mail it, call Tracy for the mailing address.
Thank you to everyone for your participation. Let’s show Kathy how
much we appreciate her hard work by making a block.
