Two Kisses
for Maddy
Kathy Dempsey
Bernadette Melnyk, PhD, RN, CPNP/PMHNP,
FAANP, FNAP, FAAN
Millions of dollars and thousands of hours are lost
each year due to the inability to get employees to
move forward with healthcare changes. Why do 75%
of all change efforts fail? Largely because people feel
left out of the process and lack the skills, knowledge
and motivation to adapt to the organization’s new
systems, processes and procedures. Can you imagine
what your organization would be like if everyone could
lead and master change? Healthcare organizations
that equip their people to SHED faster and quicker will
be the ones that survive and thrive. This interactive
keynote session is packed with practical strategies
for immediate implementation!
This presentation will describe the state of EBP
across the U.S. and key strategies for advancing
and sustaining evidence-based care. Implications of
findings from a recent national study on EBP with
chief nurses also will be highlighted.
Matt and Liz Logelin were high school sweethearts.
After years of long-distance dating, the pair finally settled together in Los Angeles, and they had it
all: a perfect marriage, a gorgeous new home, and
a baby girl on the way. Liz’s pregnancy was rocky,
but they welcomed Madeline, beautiful and healthy,
into the world on March 24, 2008. Just 27 hours
later, Liz suffered a pulmonary embolism and died
instantly, without ever holding the daughter whose
arrival she had so eagerly awaited. Though confronted with devastating grief and the responsibilities of
a new and single father, Matt did not surrender to
devastation; he chose to keep moving forward—to
make a life for Maddy.

Critical care obstetrics is now a
subspecialty of both medicine and
nursing, with its own unique accompanying body of knowledge and clinical practice issues. This presentation
will provide an overview of essential
concepts and current issues related
to critical care obstetric nursing. Emphasis will be placed on a collaborative model of care and the role of the

NE3 - Maternal Health
Initiatives
Karol E. Watson, MD, PhD
Michael C. Lu, MD, MS, MPH
This session will focus on cardiovascular health in women across the
lifespan. Highlights will include discussion of cardiovascular vulnerabilities in women at all ages, the impact
of lifestyle interventions and the role
of pharmacotherapies in treatment of
cardiovascular disease.
Approximately 4 million women give
birth annually in the United States.
An estimated 52,000 will experience
severe complications, including 500
and 600 maternal deaths, of which
half have been identified as preventable. Also troubling are the significant racial and ethnic disparities in
maternal mortality which have persisted for more than 60 years. During
this session Dr. Lu will review current
initiatives that address these very
alarming and costly trends in maternal morbidity and mortality. Improved
systems of maternity care, public
awareness and education related to
the familial and societal burdens of
maternal morbidity and mortality,
and use of clinical guidelines and
protocols for obstetric emergencies
are part of the maternal health initiatives that are intended to improve
the health, safety and well-being of
mothers in the United States.

Movie Screening:
The American Nurse
Featuring AWHONN member
Naomi R. Cross, AD, RN
THE AMERICAN NURSE is a heartwarming film that explores some of
the biggest issues facing America—
aging, war, poverty, prisons—through
the work and lives of nurses. It is
an examination of real people that
will change how we think about
nurses and how we wrestle with the
challenges of healing America. THE
AMERICAN NURSE is an important contribution to America’s ongoing conversation about what it means to care. The
film follows the paths of five nurses in various practice specialties including Jason Short as he drives up a rugged
creek to reach a home-bound cancer patient in Appalachia. Tonia Faust, who runs a prison hospice program where
inmates serving life sentences care for their fellow inmates as they’re dying. Naomi Cross, as she coaches an ovarian
cancer survivor through the Caesarean delivery of her son. Sister Stephen, a nun who runs a nursing home filled with
goats, sheep, llamas and chickens, where the entire nursing staff comes together to sing for a dying resident. And
Brian McMillion, an Army veteran and former medic, rehabilitating wounded soldiers returning from war.

The President’s Party: Gala on the Sea
Monday, June 15 • 8 – 10:30 p.m. • Long Beach Convention Center
Long Beach is home to many attractions and experiences, but none as historic and majestic as the retired ocean liner,
the Queen Mary. Now it’s time to bring the signature royal galas, deck parties, evening receptions and midnight mixers
to AWHONN and the Long Beach Convention Center. The President’s Party is THE celebratory highlight of the AWHONN
Convention. Whether you want to showcase sparkling jewelry and evening attire or break out your cruise wear, you will
find a perfect fit at the Gala on the Sea party. So set sail for a night of light hors d’oeuvres and drinks, live music,
dancing and massive moments of fun in distinctively different party-within-a-party rooms.
The Royal Ball
Despite the lyrics of the recent popular song that laments
“we’ll never be royals,” everyone has the blue-blooded
lineage tonight. Set in the largest of venues, The Royal
Ball celebrates the heyday of the Queen Mary, when regal
gowns and formal wear were set against the backdrop of
sophisticated décor and ambiance. This royal gala setting will take you back to a time when ocean travel was
indeed luxurious and featured high-end live music, exotic
cocktails, festive dancing and timeless style.
Cabin Fever
Need somewhere to go to really party the night away?
Cabin Fever is the intimate but lively club-like setting for
the partygoer who prefers the spirited sounds of a dynamic
DJ. At Cabin Fever, you’re at the center of the action.
20
The Ocean View
Need to enjoy a bit of the Long Beach ocean breeze?
The Ocean View gives you the exclusive, outdoor-only
experience. With networking tables, comfy seating
and seaside-inspired cocktails, The Ocean View will
be the sought-after place to cool off, chill and enjoy
the night.
The Captain’s Reception
At times, we may need a break from the energetic music
and dancing. Set in an open-space area, just outside The
Royal Ball, The Captain’s Reception is the ideal venue
to reconnect with colleagues, meet and mingle and recharge while enjoying refreshing beverages in a relaxed,
stress-free environment.

About Long Beach
2015
AWHONN
Convention
June 13–17
They say there is nothing new under the sun, but we suggest that you spend a little time in Long
Beach. Over the past decade, the city has invested over $1 billion into its downtown waterfront,
transforming it into one of the most dynamic seaside destinations in the country. Rent a bike
and make like one of the locals while taking in the sights. Shop and dine in beach-chic Belmont
Shore, or get ferried around in your own gondola in Naples. If nothing else, you can always hit
the hot, sandy beach the city is named for—that never gets old.
Long Beach by day is an experience unto itself, but as the dazzling LED light installations
start to glow over Ocean Boulevard, the city takes on a whole other character. Fortunately, the
best in Long Beach’s nightlife is never more than a few steps or a short bus ride away from
the convention center—in fact there are more than 120 restaurants within just an eight-block
radius! Take in stylish nightclubs, live music and artisanal bars that line the city’s downtown,
up and down Pine Avenue, the Promenade, Broadway and all points in between.
