Introduction to Islamic Art
This short, practical introduction to Islamic art will look at the richness and diversity of geometric and floral patterns
from the Islamic world. Students will learn about principles of Islamic design through recreating and analysing
beautiful traditional patterns. We will also consider elements such as brushwork and paint techniques, colour
harmony, regional variations, and traditional methods and materials. Students will have the opportunity to create a
final piece in a media of their choice.

Introduction to Islamic Manuscript Illumination
For centuries, Muslim artists have used gold, ink, and brightly coloured paints to illuminate and beautify sacred
manuscripts. This course will give students the opportunity to learn about traditional painting and gilding techniques
used in Islamic manuscript illumination, as well as the geometric and floral patterns that underpin the illuminated
borders. We will also look at the the artistic and historical context within which this art developed. Students will use
traditional skills and techniques from the Islamic world to recreate beautiful illuminated patterns.

Introduction to Islamic Floral Design
Along with calligraphy and geometry, floral design (or "islimi") is considered one of the key visual languages of Islamic
art. Spiralling and intertwining leaves and flowers have graced the manuscripts, ceramics, architecture and textiles of
the Islamic world in materials as diverse as gold, clay, silk and stone for centuries. This practical course will introduce
students to the fundamental principles and conventions underlying Islamic floral patterns. Students will be encouraged
to use knowledge gained on the course to create their own unique designs in their choice of media.

Introduction to Islamic Geometry
Students will have the opportunity to explore geometric patterns from the Islamic world. By drawing and analysing each
pattern, step by step, we will gain an understanding of the fundamental geometric principles that underpin these designs.
We will also consider the influence of regional variations, colour harmony, and traditional methods and materials used in
creating these patterns. Students will have the opportunity to produce a final piece in a media of their choice.
