2014 was an excellent year for Bartels as we celebrated 60 Years of Caring. We were especially
honored with the 2014 Governor’s Quality Award in recognition of our excellent services. We
remained focused on our mission and celebrated our successes and services with concentrated
efforts of supporting local charities, participating in community events and sponsoring a day at
the Bremer County Fair.
As I reflect over six decades of Bartels service to the community, one constant rings true:
the Bartels staff genuinely cares about our residents! In 2014, my family experienced this
loving nature on a personal level. My father, a Bartels resident for three years, passed away in
December. We personally experienced the “Good Life at Bartels” with the compassionate care
he received; not just the excellent direct care staff, but every staff member from housekeeping,
dining services, maintenance, business services and leisure services. Our talented employees
live and breathe the Bartels’ mission on a daily basis; transforming its meaning into “The Good
Life” for our residents. I am so proud of our staff at Bartels.
We made excellent progress towards our strategic vision goals in 2014. We are thankful for the
generous, committed friends of Bartels that have served as loyal supporters over the past years.
It will continue to take a concerted effort from our constituents to keep the hopes and dreams of
a better future at Bartels alive. We are committed to continue the Lord’s work of caring for our
residents to better meet their individualized needs – to make Bartels the best possible place to
live and work. Thank you for your continued support. Stay tuned as Bartels continues to make
progress in 2015 towards better serving community needs.

It is my pleasure, on behalf of the Board of Directors, to formally express our appreciation to the Bartels leadership, staff, and volunteers who inspire us. We are proud of our dedicated staff who have provided compassion,
comfort, healing and hope to the residents we have served 24/7; 365 days a year for the past 60 years. Your

Eisenach Village...Independent Living
Eisenach Village is a new type of active adult community with a
focus on freedom...freedom from the everyday chores and home
maintenance, and freedom to experience the lifestyle, leisure and
learning that the community offers. Eisenach Village is located
just north of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community
Campus and west of the Wartburg College Campus.
Eichhorn Haus...Independent Living
Eichhorn Haus is a retirement lifestyle, filled with friendships, social activities, security and, best of all, few
responsibilities. You’ll enjoy the independence you want, with the assurance of a continuing care community to
serve your future health needs. Located on the Bartels Campus, Eichhorn Haus features one-and two-bedroom
apartments.
Linden Place...Assisted Living
Linden Place offers private apartment living with a blend of personal support and health care services to help
you stay active and independent. Three options of personal service plans, attentive staff, a wellness program,
transportation and dining are offered at Linden Place. You’ll enjoy the independence you want with the security,
companionship and reassurance that comes from being a part of a continuing care community.

or for long-term nursing care, residents and patients of

Evergreen Arbor...Memory Care
Evergreen Arbor is a dedicated center of care for those with
Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. It is a spacious,
nurturing home designed to give residents the freedom to safely
explore on their own, join in familiar activities or relax at their
leisure. Evergreen Arbor is a licensed memory care program with
an emphasis on each person’s health, quality of life and wellbeing.
Skilled Care & Rehabilitation
Your first step toward home...
Bartels Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation is a community of care, support and encouragement. We provide
nursing care and rehabilitation to help patients with recovery following a hospital stay. Skilled Care is often a
necessary transition for those recovering from a stroke, heart attack, surgery, fracture or other health conditions
before returning home from the hospital.
Bartels At Home
Our history of quality, Christian services now extends into your home through our in-home services program,
Bartels-At-Home. To ensure your safety and security, Bartels-At-Home caregivers are compassionate and caring
staff that have been thoroughly screened and professionally trained to meet your needs with Home Helper
Services, Personal Care Services and Peace of Mind Services.

Quality Care
Rod Roberts, the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals
Director, presented the 2014 Governor’s Award for Quality
Care in Health Care Facilities to Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community. Deb Schroder, Bartels President & CEO, accepted
the award and praised the Bartels staff for the dedicated work
done each day to better serve the Bartels residents. She also
acknowledged Bartels pet-therapy lab, Lucy, for her gentle
spirit and loving personality that brings warmth and joy
to the residents. The Governor’s Award for Quality Care
was established to recognize long-term care providers that
provide – in the nominator’s opinion a high level of care to
their residents. This year’s Governor’s Award recipients were
selected from a field of 16 nominated facilities. Since the first
awards were presented in 2001, a total of 50 awards have been presented to 44 individual facilities.
The facility was nominated by a family member of a Bartels resident “The Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community in Waverly has 60 years of providing the highest in quality physical settings, services, and care for
its residents,” the nominator wrote. “The Community provides a full-range of living needs from independent
apartments and homes, assisted living, skilled nursing and rehabilitation, nursing, memory care, and in-home
care. Residents are able to remain as community members – to be part of family traditions and community
traditions,” the nominator added.
One of the services provided by Bartels – and dear to the heart of the nominator – was the implementation of
a pet therapy program. “Bartels is now home to Lucy Lola Lorraine, a very lovable and highly-trained black
Labrador. Lucy has grown very accustomed to approaching people in wheelchairs, on crutches, and in hospital
beds and has the ability to help calm and soothe agitated individuals while lifting the spirits of those who might
be sad or lonely,” the nominator explained. “The pet therapy program is just one example of Bartels’ everchanging environment as it responds and adapts to the needs and desires of the residents, and, thus, “offering
them the best of physical, emotional, and spiritual care.”

Celebrating
60 Years!
Many exciting things happened, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community, as we celebrated our 60th anniversary in 2014.
In honor of this milestone, Bartels chose to give back to the
community through a variety of events. Monthly, the Bartels
staff hosted potlucks with a focus on community causes.
January kicked off the local campaign by recognizing the
need to fight against hunger and poverty. Bartels hosted its
third annual Souper Bowl of Caring. This annual nationwide
endeavor helps address hunger needs in local communities.
“It began as a youth program in 1990 with a prayer requesting
that we enjoy the Super Bowl Football game, along with being
mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat.” says
Pastor Allen Bidne, Bartels Chaplain. “Our efforts at Bartels now includes not only the young, but the young
at heart.” With tables set up across the Bartels campus, including at Eisenach Village, Bartels residents, staff
and visitors collected approximated $400 in food items and raised $109 to be donated to the Waverly location
of the NE Iowa Food Bank. In the following months, nearly $3500 was raised to give to the American Heart
Association, the Waverly Fire Department, Retrieving Freedom, Inc., the Waverly Police Department, Bremer
County Relay for Life, Waverly Pet Rescue, Waverly Health Center Emergency Dept., the W-SR United Way,
the East Central Iowa Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and the W-SR Area United Way Adopt-A-Family
program. Charles Infelt, declared the week of May 11-17, 2014 as Nursing Home Week at Bartels Lutheran
Retirement Community. Bartels adopted the national theme of “Living the Aloha Spirit” and, in keeping with
their Resident First Philosophy, demonstrated the qualities of patience, kindness, harmony and good feelings in
caring and respect for others. Bartels sponsored a summer Concert in the Park, and, in August, sponsored a Day
at the Bremer County Fair. The Bartels Chef did cooking demonstrations, Bartels staff and volunteers distributed
free popcorn and ice cream and Deb Schroeder, the Bartels President/CEO, baked a pie for the annual pie
auction held during the youth scrambles.
Thank you to our Bartels friends and families, our vibrant community and our faithful donors for all of the help and
encouragement given to Bartels during 2014. We’re proud to serve the community!

Rock Around the Clock
Poodle Skirts, Saddle Shoes and Rock ‘n’ Roll music filled
the Good Shepherd Chapel at Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community! A 50’s Sock Hop was held for the residents of
Woodland Terrace. Women residents were adorned with Polkadot scarves and cat eye glasses and men donned soda jerk hats
to endorse the party theme. Records hanging from the ceiling,
pink and white carnations to resemble a strawberry soda were
used as table centerpieces and an inflatable jukebox completed
the decorations. A pink Thunderbird, oversized glasses and an
Elvis Presley microphone served as props as residents posed
for pictures. The party menu included burgers, hot dogs, potato
chips and Jell-O cubes. Homemade chocolate or vanilla malts,
topped with whipped cream and a cherry, topped off the meal.
Residents enjoyed dancing with staff to favorite tunes from the
1950’s performed by J.D. Francis. Great food, drinks and music
were enjoyed by all.
Little Free Library
One of the most important lessons, parents can teach their children is a love of reading; a lesson well learned
by the children of Arnold and Helen Imbrock. As a tribute to their parents, and with a passion for reading,
the Imbrock family installed and dedicated a Little Free Library on the campus of Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books; a “take a book, leave a book”
gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories.
“This library is in memory of our Dad and to honor our Mom.” says Rachel Imbrock. The Little Free Library is a
testament to our parents’ love of sharing, and more importantly, giving to the community. We hope people find,
use and love the library on the Bartels campus.” Dan Imbrock, a carpenter, stepped up to the plate to design and
build the structure. If you look inside the library you will see a heartwarming family touch; a heart surrounding
“Arnie + Helen 1947”.
“It’s exciting to have Waverly’s first Little Free Library on the Bartels campus. It’s about reading, it’s about
community, and it’s about working together! I hope our community friends will share in the spirit of it,” stated
Barb Bridges, Vice President of Marketing & Development at Bartels. The Little Free Library can be found at
Bartels Blue Entrance off of 5th Ave NW. and is officially registered at www.littlefreelibrary.org

Weddings Through the Ages
The Leisure Services Team at Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community hosted a Weddings Through the Ages event.
Residents and guests glanced back at the most popular wedding
trends, attire, and more, from the early 1900s through presentday weddings. Vintage fashions, elegant styled gowns of the
1940’s, short wedding dresses reminiscent of the 1950’s and
the modern day beaded dresses were displayed, along with
wedding photos through the decades. “A wedding begins a
journey; a journey called marriage.” said Bartels’ Chaplain,
Pastor Al Bidne. Represented were the various items that
marked the beginning of the journey by brides and grooms
though the ages. In keeping with tradition, wedding cake,
nuts/mints, punch and coffee were served.
Intergenerational programs
Intergenerational programs were an annual focus at Bartels. The Adopt-a-Grandparent program with
Wartburg students, Little Friends with St. Paul’s 5th grade students, and Common Chord with St. Paul’s
2nd grade students, provided joy for residents throughout the year. The Gifts of Joy Christmas program
gave youngsters the opportunity to provide Christmas presents for residents during the holidays.
Grant funds from the Guernsey Foundation were awarded to enhance the wellness program with new
exercise equipment for residents of Eichhorn Haus and Linden Place. The Shell Rock Music Association
awarded grant funds to support the Bartels music therapy program, and funds awarded from the Elsie
Mitchell Crosby Foundation and The Northeast Iowa Community Foundation helped to purchase new
equipment for nursing and Nu-Step wellness equipment.

Horticulture therapy
Spring flowers bloomed at Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community, thanks to the help from CUNA Mutual Group
volunteers. “We wanted to do something that not only we
would benefit from, but would also be a gift to the community.
Flower planting quickly made it to the top of the list and Bartels
was also an easy choice when it came to a location.” says Matt
Schaefer, CUNA Mutual Administrative Specialist. CUNA
Mutual generously provided the flowers and volunteers to plant
assorted annuals around the Bartels campus. Teresa Krueger,
Woodland Terrace and Evergreen Arbor Administrator, adds,
“We are so grateful for the time and effort that CUNA Mutual
volunteers offered from their busy work day to plant flowers for
our residents, visitors, and staff to enjoy!” Horticulture therapy
activities are important to the residents at Bartels. Many of
the residents plant flower gardens and vegetable gardens, and
others enjoy tending plants in Bartels Greenhouse. “One of the
greatest joys in life is planting seeds and watching them grow. Gardening rewards us through stimulation of our
senses and our feeling of accomplishment.” says Diana Oltmann, Horticulture Specialist at Bartels. “We also love
the help we get with annual plantings from the St. Paul’s students.”
Bartels Baking Group
The Bartels Baking Group, under the direction of Barb Wagner, meets weekly to prepare recipes that are family
favorites. The group also likes to experiment with new recipes and techniques. “My mother is an excellent
cook, and had me in the kitchen at a very young age rolling pie crusts and baking bread. Any knowledge that I
have in cooking and baking can be credited to her and to 4-H. Sometimes on Monday afternoons during our
baking session, takes me back to days of 4-H demonstrations” says Wagner. The women and men who attend
this group are experts in the subject of food. They have shared their specialities and interests, but all agree that
meals and baking were a part of their daily routines. They took pleasure and pride in providing balanced meals.
“Our families sat down together at every meal,” one resident shared. “We didn’t do fast food. Meal time was
the beginning and end to our busy day.” The group gathers recipes from church cookbooks and family recipes.
They have learned that recipes can be found through online searching. Each month recipes are selected based
on resident choices/suggestions, monthly holiday or “whatever someone is hungry for.” “I have enjoyed working
with the residents, and helping them bring back memories from the kitchen and create new ones. Baking group
is their (residents) group. I have learned from them and they from me, and I thank them for letting me be a part
of their group” concludes Wagner.

Celebrating
Through Worship
Dear friends in Christ: When you take a look at the pictures
in the hallway outside of Good Shepherd Chapel, you will find
pictures of people, of our Corporate Churches and of the early
years at Bartels. The people have changed and the buildings
have changed, but one thing has remained the same: Bartels
has offered the ‘good life’ for over 60 years because of that
foundation upon which the Bartels campus has been built. It is
not the land…it is a single cornerstone. In Ephesians 2:19-22
the Apostle Paul wrote- ‘So then you are no longer strangers
and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and
members of the household of God, built upon the foundation
of the prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in
whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into
a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.’ The Apostle
Paul described a household of God. Within this household, a variety of saints have lived and served. Within
this household, a variety of saints yet live and serve. The people of Bartels, the churches of Bartels, and the entire
Bartels campus is built upon one cornerstone. It is Jesus Christ. And with that living cornerstone firmly in
place…this household of God will continue to serve in His name. Thanks be to God!

While a student at Wartburg, I visited my grandfather’s sister, Margaret Josephine
Wintz, a Bartels’ resident. At nearly 95 years old, she was the family matriarch and
had the family’s strong memory genetics. I always left richer than when I had come
and regret that I did not ask her more questions. Now, 43 years later, my visits to
parishioners continue to enrich me personally and professionally. St. Paul’s long
Bartels ties are an extension of our ministry. We are truly privileged to join hand in
hand with people and places of Bartels as God’s work unfolds with such loving care.

Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community
and Corporate Churches
Since 1954, Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community has
served as a Christian-centered home for more than 2500
residents. Church sponsorship and support have been at the
core of Bartels’ success and commitment to serve older adults
in need, regardless of their income.
Bartels’ corporate churches truly are “partners in caring”
for aging members of our community. Through volunteer
commitments, gifts of support and participation in annual
meetings, the corporate churches impact the direction of
Bartels and help ensure continued Christian services for our residents.
Corporate Churches pledge to:
• Include Bartels as an extended ministry of the congregation
• Elect delegates to serve as representatives at Bartels’ annual meetings to conduct Bartels business and elect
members of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community Board of Directors. This Board has governing
responsibility for Bartels’ operations and for appointing the Foundation Board of Trustees
• Support the Bartels mission with ongoing participation through volunteers and voluntary financial support
within the limits of their resources
• Sponsor a Bartels Sunday annually through a bulletin insert, delegate report or fellowship presentation
• Accept an active role in the congregation’s shared projects with Bartels
• Assist in facilitating communication between Bartels and members of the congregation
Bartels pledges to:
• Carry out its mission in accordance with Christian care
• Serve as an educational resource on issues of the elderly
• Provide Bartels’ facilities for corporate church use
• Communicate pertinent information to corporate church congregations
• Have an active role in shared projects with congregations, delegates, pastors and congregation members

Through
Growth
Eisenach Village Growth
Exciting development and growth was the Eisenach Village
banner for 2014. There were eight new commitments and
eleven closings in 2014. Six new homes were built, including
the first duplex, and two existing homes were re-sold, bringing
the current total number of homes to 46. There were a lot of
new neighbors in 2014.
As the most unique independent-living community in all
of Northeast Iowa, Eisenach Village utilizes the Epcon
Communities concept which provides for beautifully-designed,
attached townhomes. These homes are rich in both features and looks, and are constructed with energy
efficiency in mind.
There are so many amenities that have brought people to Eisenach Village, the most significant being the
lifestyle that can be found there. The architecture and the village design contribute to both privacy and
community, whichever you prefer whenever you prefer it. In addition, the benefits provided by Bartels
maintenance frees you up to spend your time the way YOU want to spend it, doing what YOU want to do.
Social use of the Klubhaus by Village Members continued to increase for both internal events and for hosted
events involving outside guests. Monthly all-village Member social gatherings are popular, and on Holidays
throughout the year, there always seems to be a party going on. Member-hosted anniversary celebrations,
extended-family gatherings, special event receptions, and service organization meetings are becoming more
regular, as are adult learning opportunities.
For those residents who are interested in off-site adult learning, sports activities, or performing arts,
Wartburg College offers special benefits to Eisenach Village residents. In addition, if residents would ever
need any of the health care services provided by Bartels, they would be given priority consideration for
accessing those services.
2015 promises to be another good year of growth and development for the village. If you have any questions

Growth in Music Therapy
2014 fostered many positive areas of growth for Bartels’ music
therapy department, and on a national level, the field of music
therapy has forged ahead with many progressive developments.
A full time music therapist position was re-established at
Bartels in 2014, adding to Bartels’ long history of having a
strong music therapy program to serve residents. As a result,
more residents are able to be reached on an individual basis
to reap the benefits of participation in music therapy. Our
music therapist utilizes music interventions to help residents
address issues such as agitation, anxiety, depression, or
physical inactivity. Weekly group music therapy sessions allow
opportunities for residents to have meaningful interactions
with others and also frequently provide a chance for residents
to recall positive memories. Additionally, group music therapy
exercise sessions were initiated in 2014 to increase residents’
physical activity; in these sessions, residents increase or
maintain their range of motion, balance, and endurance—all while music interventions provide structure for
their exercise. Sometimes residents get so caught up in singing that they forget they are exercising!
On a national level, support for music therapy as a clinical treatment is continuing to grow. Many states have
received legislative protection to make music therapy a licensed profession. In the state of Iowa (and several
others), music therapists are board-certified, but are actively seeking licensure in order to make music therapy
more accessible to all. Several universities throughout the U.S. have added a Music Therapy degree program,
and the number of practicing music therapists in the U.S. continues to grow. Of note is the positive press that
music therapy has received in light of Senator Gaby Gifford’s continued speech & physical recovery, due in part
to music therapy; additionally, research in the Journal of Music Therapy, Music Therapy Perspectives, and other
academic journals continues to show the effectiveness of music therapy as a treatment for individuals living with
Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia.

e grateful for what you have. Being grateful can inspire generosity because it will make you aware of all
of the great things you have in your life. Make a list of those things. You may be surprised just how good you
already have it… and become more apt to share your life with others.
3. Give first. When you receive your next paycheck, make your first expense an act of giving. Often times, we
wait to see how much we have left over before we determine how much we can give away. You just may be
surprised how you won’t even miss it.
4. S
pend time with people in need. One of the most effective antidotes for non-generosity is to make space in
your life for those who actually need your help. After all, it is a very small step to go from knowing somebody
in need to helping somebody in need.
5. G
ive from the Heart. Give simply because you want to give; because you’ve found something you believe in,
and because you want to do good in the world.

the fiscal year. Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community was founded upon the spirit of giving with a 1954 bequest from

The Bartels Memorial Foundation: Established in 1984, this fund strengthens Bartels with funds to meet the needs of today’s
residents and to assure care for residents in the future.
The Bartels Chaplaincy Endowment Fund: Established in 1997, this fund supports Bartels’ Christian mission and commitment
to serving the spiritual needs of its residents and assures the presence of full-time Chaplaincy services at Bartels in the future.
A financial gift to the Chaplaincy Endowment allows you to leave a part of your values and your Christian heritage to future
generations.
The Bartels Good Shepherd Fund: Established in 2009, this is a benevolent assistance fund designed for our residents who
need additional financial aid to cover the full cost of their care. Your gift means helping to keep a promise to our residents and
offers an opportunity to bless others through a generous gift. It’s the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor that adds strength and
kindness to our mission.

Since 1954, Waverly’s only nursing
center has evolved from a “home for
the aged” to a multilevel retirement
community, offering a full range of
health care and retirement living
services on one campus today.
Services, on a 20-acre campus, include
nursing care, skilled nursing and rehab,
Alzheimer’s/dementia care, assisted
living and independent living. With its
Christian-based mission and residents
first philosophy, Bartels gives residents
peace of mind knowing they can move
to a higher level of care when needed
without having to leave the community
they call home.
Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community recently expanded its vision
with the addition of Eisenach Village,
a townhome style living community
that serves active adults over the age
of 55. Eisenach Village is located just
north of Bartels Lutheran Retirement
Community on over 30 acres.
