OUT SPOKIN’ FOR RIDE LEADERS BCC ‐LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS MEMBER CLUB Issue Ride Leader Special Edition 5.2015 Out Spokin’ for Ride Leaders BCC -League of American Bicyclists member club WWW.BCCUTAH.ORG Ride Leader Update By Don Williams LCI 253, Road Captain We are heading into another busy ride season and another year filled with rides galore. The board thought it would be helpful to pull together a few reminders and quick tips to help things run smoothly. RIDE LEADER EMAIL GROUP RIDE CANCELLATION Let us review the Guidelines to see if there is a way we can get a ride or two in and still be safe in the process – in between raindrops. DRY ROADS REMAIN OUR GOAL Ask yourself, if it gets my bike dirty – was it dry enough to ride? Remember ‐ your attendance at A2Z automatically enrolls you in the email group [email protected]. May 2015 and we have 119 rides scheduled so far this month, with a total of 21 rides cancelled as of May 17th. This surpasses last May’s total of 20 cancellations for the entire month out of a total of 140 rides. If you need someone to step in or sub, post a request to this email group. It notifies all those who attended the A2Z sessions. GO – NO GO ANNOUNCEMENTS should come 2 hours prior to the start of the ride – many times that is a tough one. Out Spokin’ for Ride Leaders is a special edition for Bonneville Cycling Club members that have completed the 2015 A2Z Rider Leader training. It is published on an as needed basis. Please submit questions to [email protected]. OUT SPOKIN’ FOR RIDE LEADERS BCC ‐LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS MEMBER CLUB | Issue RIDE LEADER SPECIAL EDITION 5.2015 GO TO THE START Even after cancelling, Ride Leaders need to go to the ride start. Especially where the weather is iffy and could go in either direction or when rides are cancelled with less than a two hour notice. We had 5 members go to Sunday mornings ride who missed the No‐Go announcement, 4 rode, 1 missed the ride start , 1 member turned around in route, and at least 1 stopped putting on his riding shorts when the cancellation notice hit the mailing list. No word on the alternative form of clothing chosen… DELAYED START TIME With the weather patterns we’ve seen lately – it is a viable option Laurie Googasian’s Sunday afternoon ride delayed the start a few minutes and got a ride in. Even on a weeknight ride it is possible to delay the start – anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour and be able to ride on dry roads. Routes may have to be shortened due to limited daylight. WHAT HAPPENS IF RIDERS STILL SHOW? If the conditions were safe enough to ride – mileage will be awarded as discussed previously in the A2Z sessions. Older members will remember Mike Hawed and Doug Jensen riding through the international center where the snow was so bad, Doug actually ran into a curb and fell. This would not have been considered an acceptable use of the go no‐go rule. Ride Leader credit will not be awarded on a go no‐go ride. The substitute ride leader has not fulfilled all the functions worthy of ride leader credit, unless you have to fill out an incident report. If the ride is a Series Ride, no series credit will be awarded to riders. INCIDENT REPORT FORM SCHEDULING A RIDE 7 day notice is in effect. MAY RIDES Looking at the short term ‐ we need an in‐town ride on May 30th. After this weekend’s storms, the Little Red Pre‐Ride has been re‐ scheduled for May 30th. It is a great route obviously but a 90 minute drive with a 70 and 100 mile option. We have members that will be staying in town. Let’s accommodate those looking for something closer to home or those wanting to ride a shorter route. Use of the incident report form has come on‐line since the Polar Bear A2Z session, and has been made available to our ride leaders at Club rides. The form should be carried with you whenever you lead a ride. A copy can also be found at the end of this newsletter. In case of an incident requiring an ambulance, or a serious fall that could require an emergency room trip after the ride, fill the form out completely and forward without delay to [email protected] and [email protected]. We need to have this information on file so the Insurance Company can be notified immediately. Remember rides must be posted 7 days in advance, so hopefully we can get something on the calendar in the next couple of days. FOR 2015 – ALL local “SERIES” ROUTES continue to require a marked course and be a different course from regularly scheduled daily or weekly club routes unless approved by the BCC Board. Answers to your questions regarding Series Rides and marking and most other questions can be found at http://bccutah.org/calendar/ride‐leader‐ guidelines 2 | Page OUT SPOKIN’ FOR RIDE LEADERS BCC ‐LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS MEMBER CLUB | Issue RIDE LEADER SPECIAL EDITION 5.2015 What is this month’s theme SOCIAL DAYS OF SUMMER For June, we focus on Social Series Rides. We need to up the number of Social Series Rides this month. At press time, we have a Social from Cotton Bottom on a different route and back for burgers, rather than waiting until September. Another event will be Legacy to Pages Lane and the new Steak‐n‐Shake in Centerville, for a shake –and a ride back. This will probably be scheduled on a mid‐week evening, I suspect no later than the 23rd. We expect 6 to 10 Social Series rides. Those already scheduling rides for June might be open to inserting Social rides in place of normal weeknight rides in some instances or infilling the schedule on dates that work . The recurring social routes were discussed last week. Differing start and finish points over a similar route will actually be a different route. We need to come up with 8 to 10 new routes with leaders to keep the Social Series rolling. We also need route ideas and good stop locations to keep the social intent of these rides in place. QUICK NOTES JULY IS ADVENTURE MONTH I have a couple of ideas for bringing out some mothballed routes and a couple of new ideas for July 3‐ 4‐5, 18‐19th and the 24th. These will be Metric and Super distances probably. If you have any ideas on these, contact the road captain at [email protected]. *RIDE LEADER NEEDED We need a leader for the July 12 Upland Roller route from Warship. Mary Margaret says Don is taking a vacation this summer. RIDE CANCELLATION If you truly need to cancel a ride, it is a three‐step process. 1) Post a note to the email list [email protected]. This is one of the many reasons it is important for all our ride leaders and members to subscribe to the email list. 2) Post the cancellation to the club calendar. Post it just like you scheduled your ride originally, but put CANCELLED in the title – and 3) Most importantly, go to the start point to inform those riders who aren’t continually plugged into the matrix that the ride is cancelled. This is easier when actual rain or snow is falling to back up your reasoning. BIKE MONTH Bike Month bingo continues for the remainder of the month. The Board will be deciding awards for members submitting their bingo cards with a minimum of 5 squares filled in. Encourage participation! CUE SHEETS Please remember to list your phone number on the cue sheet. Keep your phone on during the ride. This is a great way for lost riders, someone having mechanical trouble, or a rider that needs to cut the route short to connect with you. EARBUDS The use of earbuds remains against the policies of BCC and as such is not permitted on club rides. 3 | Page OUT SPOKIN’ FOR RIDE LEADERS BCC ‐LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS MEMBER CLUB | Issue RIDE LEADER SPECIAL EDITION 5.2015 NO-DROP RIDES No‐Drop Rides were discussed at the second A2Z Ride Leader Training. No‐Drop Rides may appeal to riders that are newer, slower, and unfamiliar with group riding or those trying to meet other riders. Look for opportunities to indicate some of our weeknight and Social Series rides are “no‐drop.” On these rides, the group will either stay together so no one gets left on their own or they will have designated regroup points where everyone can get back together. In all cases, a no‐drop ride is swept, meaning no rider is left on their own. To make a no‐drop ride truly work, a group of riders (not just the Ride Leader themselves), would have to commit to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for the new rider(s) to feel included and welcome. Many of us may be fans of open pace rides, but as an all‐inclusive member’s club, let’s find ways to get new members involved. Put your thinking caps on, and let’s find ways to implement this over the coming month. MARKING YOUR ROUTES How do we make our marks look neat? Intersections that sit on several overlapping ride routes are getting cluttered from the number of marks showing up to signal a turn. Last year, Bee expressed this concern. If you look along Holladay Blvd or anywhere through Layton, a few intersections can be a mess. I’m proposing a Dan Henry with the letters for each route lined up below the Dan Henry rather than symbols all over the intersection. This would indicate a turn and the letter designator in a more neat fashion. If you are re‐marking a previously used course, find the remnants of last year’s faded marks and remark over them. This helps to cut down on marking clutter at popular intersections. DAN HENRY MARKS FYI: Dan Henry is the inventor of directional pavement markings commonly used to guide participants along the route of organized bicycling events. Originally, the markings consisted of a circle with a vertical line from the edge of the circle pointing in the direction of travel (straight ahead, left turn, right turn) 4 | Page OUT SPOKIN’ FOR RIDE LEADERS BCC ‐LEAGUE OF AMERICAN BICYCLISTS MEMBER CLUB | Issue RIDE LEADER SPECIAL EDITION 5.2015 Posting a Ride Instructions to post a ride for our new Ride Leaders – easy as 1‐2‐3. STEP 1 STEP 3 STEP 2 Your name has to match info on file with BCC RIDE NAME Information for riders. Remember not everyone has ridden this ride before. CANCELLED RIDES Post the cancellation to the club calendar. Post it just like you scheduled your ride originally, but put CANCELLED in the title. Where do we meet? Optional, can include links to Map My Ride, Strava, etc. This new code helps us eliminate spam and ensure humans are posting rides! 5 | Page Silent Sports Association Incident Report It is important to have written incident reports on file regarding injuries, property damage or other incidents that may result in a claim against your sports organization. Many such claims allege negligence, and written reports prepared immediately after an incident occurs are invaluable in defending these types of claims. In the event of a serious injury, it is important to ask for written statements from witnesses and individuals actually involved in the incident. One copy of the report should be kept on file with your organization for at least three years since many lawsuits are filed long after the injury occurs. One copy should be forwarded to McKay Insurance Agency – contact information is at the bottom of page two. Attach any additional information that might be helpful in defense of a future claim, such as a police report, doctor’s statement, pre-event inspection report, routine facility maintenance report, photos taken at the time of the incident and written statements of witnesses. This report is to be completed by: An official member of the organization for incidents occurring during covered activities or events. This may be a race director, a bike tour guide, the president of a bike club, etc. 1.
