News from the Principal
The term is well under way with a great vibe around the school. The newly
formed School Board is working hard on school direction, fete planning is on
track and the P&C are expanding their horizons. Staff, parents and
community members are taking up invitations to join in school activities and
the children are reaping the benefits of all of this hard work. Thank you to
this fantastic community for working together in the best interests of our
children.
At the last assembly, I spoke with our children about one of our core values
as selected by our community, ‘Valuing Others’ and the skills they would need
to develop this. Skills such as listening to others’ opinions, trying to
understand how they might be thinking and feeling and how they might be

EVERY DAY
Students are putting together a short film entitled ‘Our School’s a Star’
where we have the opportunity to recognise the wonderful work of many
passionate people and the diverse opportunities they offer our children.
Students involved in this project will be talking to people across the
community to find out what they feel makes our school so special. There are
those who love the Arts - music, dance, visual art; people who promote
mathematics, english, history, science or technology; those with interests in
sports, garden, play or people who are passionate about social development
and collaborative learning opportunities.
I hope you enjoy the newsletter. In this edition, you will see the stories,
achievements, photos and reports from the choir, disco, gardens and Rottnest
to name a few, that have been put together so that you can have an insight
into the wide and wonderful opportunities for your children at Beaconsfield.
We value the work and the people who make this school so special in so many
different ways.

happening. Nikki has put some
great energy into this year’s

information about this event.
RECENT EXCURSION

LOTE News
Dear Parents/Carers,
Our 2015 Indonesian assembly and charitable collection day for our Balinese sister school, SD4 Banyuasri, will
be held on Tuesday, 9 June (Week 8) at 9am. The students of SD4 are in need of art equipment, stationery
and musical instruments. The theme for this year is ‘Sarong Dress Up Day’.
All students from Pre-primary to Year 6 are encouraged to wear a sarong over their full school uniform and to
bring along a gold coin to donate towards SD4 Banyuasri. Please join us for a morning assembly which will
incorporate a short fashion parade. All students who dress up in a sarong are invited to participate in this
parade, then remove their sarongs after the assembly. We will also get to experience some Indonesian culture in
the form of 2 traditional performances. All child(ren) are encouraged to bring in a gold coin to donate even if
they prefer not to dress up on the day.
There will be a special Indonesian canteen menu on the day. Mee Goreng (fried noodles) or Nasi Goreng (fried
rice) and roti kaya (coconut jam toast) will be available to order. Julie Miller and her dedicated helpers are
coming in especially on the day, please support this special canteen menu in celebration of our Indonesian
assembly. See order form below.
If you or anyone you know is travelling to Bali, please consider carrying a few donated items over for the
students of our sister school, SD4 Banyuasri in Singaraja (North Bali). We have 2 ‘Adopt A School’
coordinators in Bali who can pick up the items from your accommodation site and deliver them to SD4. We have
donated items consisting of light paperback books and picture books stored in Room 14 which we have put aside
for the SD4 students. If you have any items at home (preferably clothes and books) in good condition for
children aged 6 – 12 years, feel free to donate them to SD4. Please contact me at
[email protected] or pop in to Room 14 on Tuesday or Thursday for more information.
Thank you for your ongoing support.

Choir news
SINGFEST REPORT
The Choir sang very well last Thursday at the South Metropolitan "SingFest". Beaconsfield was 3rd on stage,
out of the 7 choirs . There were 5 mass songs and various video clips inserted between each stage
performance. This type of program makes it very difficult to predict the exact time that our children will be on
stage, which is why the information had the start and finish times only for the excursion. Out of our 66
children, almost half were new to the choir this year but even so, all of our children looked impeccable and sang
brilliantly, exactly to plan. The entire program was diverse and most enjoyable.
.
NEXT PERFORMANCE
In week 8, on 11 June, the choir will perform the same package a second time, at the Cockburn/Fremantle Choir
Festival. Correspondence for this will be sent home shortly.
.
REQUEST
Is there a musician/parent out there who would like to assist with choir rehearsals on a regular basis, e.g.
weekly or fortnightly? Choir rehearsals commence at 8:00am and finish at 8:40am every Thursday. Your tasks
may include helping a small groups to learn their singing part or to keep in time with their xylophone
pattern. Please see Mrs Clark if this is your calling.
Kitchen Garden News
PROGRESS
This term is racing by and it is great to see lots of things growing so well in the edible gardens. Plenty of
vegetables are being harvested from the garden and cooked in the kitchen. Students made pumpkin soup last
week made with our very own pumpkins! Students also made cheesy scones which was a perfect meal for a cold
and rainy day. Students from the Kitchen garden program recently helped make a light lunch for a number of
invited guests who had a look at our program.
Term 2 Kitchen Garden sessions have started with students from Ms Freel and Ms McCann's classes. It is
wonderful to see students from these classes planting, measuring, digging and observing out in the garden. In
the kitchen students have been practising their knife skills creating wonderful salads of the imagination as well
as weighing ingredients and making Anzac biscuits. Back in class, students follow up with journal writing and
learning lots of new subject specific vocabulary. Kitchen Garden classes will be on Mondays. Parents are
welcome to sign on for sessions and to come along and join in the fun- see class teachers for available dates.
EARTHWORM WORKSHOP
Last week Senior IEC students had the chance to learn more about earthworms with a visit by Kevin from the
Worm Shed. They have been studying invertebrates in Science this semester. A feature of the workshop was
the chance to make a mini worm farm to take home. Master Gardeners got a VIP session to show them how to
set up a fridge worm farm. Look out for our new fridge worm farm in the outdoor classroom area near the
garden shed. Master Gardeners are now involved in looking after the worm farms along with Ms Freel's class.
Garden production will increase with the addition of our new worm farm and there are plans for them to start
selling worm juice and seedlings at assembly and at our upcoming Fete in October– worm juice, a great natural
fertiliser, will be sold in the under cover area after school Mondays and Tuesdays.
One of the roles of the garden teams is to report on the activities for the day. We have some pictures of the
outdoor classroom area and some of our harvested vegetables from last term up there already. Check for
regular updates on our sustainability blog on the school website:http://beaconsfieldsustainability.weebly.com/

ASPIRING WRITERS
Congratulations to Millie D, whose review of ”The White Ship” was published in Alphabet
Soup online.
My all time favourite writer is back again with another wonderful story. The White Ship, by
Jackie French, focuses on a story about a religion, friendship, and fairness, but more than
anything, freedom. This book reflects on how we should behave today. The book faces us
with real life challenges that we should handle the right way. Once you start reading this
book, it will become impossible to put the book down.
The story-line of this novel is the desperation of a search for a place to call home. Michel
lives off the coast of France. Rachel lives on an island too, off the coast of Australia. Forced
to flee, with the the threat of murder, Michel and the other children of the Island escape on
the White Ship, in search for a place to call home. As they sail, Michel realises something.
the gentle blue-green waves of the sea are not what they’re sailing on. The White Ship is
sailing on time itself. Through countless dreams, Rachel and Michel uncover a special bond,
friendship. Over time, the bond becomes stronger; so strong that it could convince the
White Ship to come ashore, and live in Australia. After all, Australia is a free country, right?
As you can guess, Michel and the other children and crew of the White Ship are refugees.
But they are not the only refugees seeking a home in Australia. In fact, a couple of thousand
refugees come into Australia every year! With numbers like these, the Australian
government sends the refugees to detention camps, where they are kept, until they’re dealt
with. After a long and tough journey, like Michel’s, the refugees deserve a better greeting.
This book makes us realise this in such a way, it feels like you’re in the situation.
Rachel is definitely not a city person. Although Rachel boards at Sydney, she isn’t sucked into
the latest technology. She can’t wait to get home, to the island, full of nature. People
shouldn’t be so addicted to technology these days, but be addicted to nature. Michel lives on
an island, and cares for his family more than anything. People, today, should care a lot more
about other things.
What makes this book so special is its unique features. Out of all the books I’ve ever read,
there has never been a plot as creative and imaginative as in this novel. Jackie French uses
her stunning ability to describe scenes and events throughout the story. It is amazing how
the words of the story created pictures in your mind as you read this thrilling book. It really
feels like you’re there. Another unique feature of this book is the way Jackie French wrote;
she has written the story from different views. Sometimes the way the characters say
things, it can be hard to understand what they mean, but after a while you will get the hang
of things. If you don’t, the other qualities of this book will make up for it!
I would recommend The White Ship for ages 10+, or people who can deal with emotions and
death. The genre would be drama, and maybe some murder, adventure and mystery, too. This
novel is definitely an award winning book.
This is Millie’s first book review for Alphabet Soup.
