Wedding Package 2015/6 Welcome to the Belmont Hotel Belmont House was built to the designs of the architect Thomas Jackson. He and his partner Thomas Duff had the bulk of their practice in South Down, both being very prolific architects. Jackson was the architect responsible for many buildings in Belfast including the Old Museum, 1831, the superbly romantic St Malchys’s RC Church, 1840, the Cliftonville Estate modelled on Clifton, Bristol, 1840, and the Scottish Amicable Life Assurance Co. building, 1863 to list but a few. Born in Waterford in 1807 he lived until 1890, his son taking over the practice which lasted until 1908. As well as Belmont House, he also designed Milltown House, the house of John Smyth who married Anna McClelland thereby linking the two houses. Jackson may also have been responsible for Bellfield and Brookfield House as all four are connected by family ties and each bear a marked similarity to one another. Belmont House was built, according to a date stone, in 1838. It is a three bay, two storey ashlar faces Georgian style mansion built of fine grained sandstone. The windows of the ground floor have had their glazing bars replaced with plate glass while those of the upper storey retain theirs. The roof is slated with moulded caves and cornice on paired console brackets. The most interesting feature of Belmont House is the imposing single storey ionic portico with fluted columns, more or less the same as that of Milltown House. Jackson designed the house for Robert McClelland who built the “Bann Weaving Factory” in the townland of Tullyear in 1865. The house remained in the possession of the McClelland's up to the 1900’s, when it was bought by W. Anderson Smyth (Jumbo). It was once owned by the Finney family, and is now in the possession of Mr Robert Bonar who runs it as a Hotel giving people a chance to sample what it must have been like to live in such a house. The architects and designers involved in the refurbishment of the Belmont Hotel, have created a modern décor in sympathy to the original décor of Belmont House. The Hotel is located beside the Famous Bronte Homelands and is close to a host of leisure facilities such as golf, tennis, pony trekking, scenic walks, fishing and local council provided recreation facilities.
