Heifer International
The 1st Grade Team, along with its scholars, is reading to feed with Heifer International. This fundraiser will not benefit BelovED, instead we are
working to instill in our scholars the love and care for the greater community. Children get sponsors for each book (or chapter or page)
they read from March 30 - April 13. At the end of the program, the
group will pool its funds and donate them to Heifer International to help Heifer assist millions of families around the world feed their
families and reach self-reliance. The goal for each classroom is $300 and
there will be prizes for the top 3
scholars who read and raise the
most! So if you see a 1st Grader in
the hall, on the bus or at the park
reading, feel free to "sponsor" them
and help each class reach their
goals!

McDonald’s Staff/Family Night
To top off Read Across America week, please join us at McDonald’s in Old
Colony Square Mall on Thursday, April 2nd, (Just east of the school on
Grand Street) for our second annual Staff/Family Night where BelovED
teachers and staff will be manning the stations from 4:30-6:30. Yup! we
will be flippin’ the burgers and working the fryers all for our scholars. BelovED will receive a portion of the profits that night, so please come out
and support us. While dining you will be treated to a BelovED-sized party
hosted by our very own Mr. Wells accompanied by DJs, Amira and Kayla.
Come early; stay late and have fun!
BelovED hosts visiting artist Shaun Edwards
BelovED artists will team up with local artist, Shaun Edwards
who will install the mural based on the work of Marc Chagall. On April 17th, Shaun will be attending our 9:30 Community Circle with grade 3 and 4 students. The Jersey Journal and Jersey City cable will be covering and filming our
Community Circle that morning, and they require photo releases of all the students filmed. The releases must be completed and returned by Monday, April 13th in order for the
children to appear on TV. If we do not receive releases,
those children will not be permitted in the filming/
photographing. They will be permitted to be in the room,
but will have to be on the sidelines away from the cameras.
The releases are attached to this newsletter and will be/have
been sent home with your child.

Food Bank of NJ Food Bank Winner
Last Friday, the Community Food Bank of NJ presented
us with an award for the 1,870 lbs. of food we collected
during the Students Change Hunger campaign where
schools across NJ competed with each other to collect as
much food as possible for their local food bank. Beloved
came in 2nd place for the second year in a row in our
division. Way to go Team BelovED!

Absenteeism Rates
Each year the Department of Education – which is responsible for issuing and renewing charters - reviews various metrics regarding the performance of charter schools. One of those metrics is attendance rates and absenteeism. We have worked hard, and have been fairly successful, at achieving
good average daily attendance rates, and we thank you all for your support here. (There is still
room for improvement, but we are in decent standing). However, in regards to chronic absenteeism
– those individual students who are absent 10% or more of the year - we perform poorly. To be
chronically absent, a student must miss 19 days of school, which is quite a lot, and our rate is among
the worst in the state.
We are aware that some of these students are out for extended travel overseas due to various family
emergencies, visa issues, and funerals, to name a few examples, and we are sympathetic to the needs
of our high immigrant population which incurs great expense to take family members to distant places like Asia. Ticket prices are certainly lower in June before school ends and in September after it begins. However much we sympathize, this travel is keeping children away from school over 10% of
the year, which I am certain everyone will agree, is a lot. Our Board of Trustees is considering policies, adopted by many other charter schools, making re-enrollment contingent upon certain attendance standards. No change in policy has been made yet, but it is under consideration, and we wanted to let parents know of this 1). before they make vacation plans and buy plane tickets and 2). to
help them understand why this policy may be adopted.
Perfect Attendance
A great big BelovED shout out to the following scholars who had perfect attendance for the month of
March! What a commitment. These scholars may dress down on Monday, April 13th.

BelovED Spring Gala
Please support the music department’s instrument program
by attending the PTO’s annual
Spring Gala on May 2, 2015.
See details attached on next
page.
On March 31st, Mr. Taylor was honored at the 2015 Teachers Who Rock! banquet in Oak Ridge,
NJ. Mr. Taylor was one of 22 educators in the state receiving this award for serving students and
the school both in and out of the classroom. Joining Mr. Taylor at the banquet were Ms. Valk, Ms.
Giblin, Ms. Archer, and Ms. Link who chose to attend and celebrate Mr. Taylor's accomplishment.
Re-registration
This week we will be sending re-registration forms to all of our currently enrolled students for next year. Students need not re-apply each year
after they are admitted, but they must re-register. We are also sending
the Transportation Questionnaire which must be completed for each
child, even if your child does not ride the bus. We receive some transportation support from the Jersey City Board of Ed based on the number of students who live beyond 2 miles from the school, so please everyone must complete the form. Both forms are due when we return
from break on Monday, April 13th.
Contact Information
Please be sure to keep your contact information current. If your address, phone or email
has changed, please notify Ms. Smith at [email protected] or call 201-630-4713.
