PENSAMIENTOS DEL PARROCO
It is a known fact that sheep are not the smartest of God’s
creatures. While they might be cute and cuddly, they lack the
intelligence to know when to stop eating or when danger may
be approaching. Sheep learn to trust the shepherd for their
very survival. So, when Jesus calls himself the shepherd,
what is saying about us? Jesus realizes that like sheep we too
need to be guided.
Es un hecho conocido que las ovejas no son el más inteligente
de las criaturas de Dios. Si bien pueden ser lindos y tiernos,
carecen de la inteligencia para saber cuándo dejar de comer o
cuando el peligro puede estar acercándose. Ovejas aprenden a
confiar en el pastor de su propia supervivencia. Así que, cuando
Jesús llama a sí mismo el pastor, lo que se dice sobre nosotros?
Jesús se da cuenta de que como ovejas nosotros también necesitamos ser guiados.
In inviting us to place our faith in Him, Jesus recognizes that
there are and will be many obstacles to living our faith. From
hostile forces within our society, to family and friends who
question what we believe, many obstacles will be placed on
life’s path that can easily cloud our ability to hear the Shepherd’s voice. Hearing the Shepherd’s voice reassures us that
in His presence we are cared for and protected. Living our
faith is never easy as this present era increasingly producers
many challenges to what we believe. Being a faithful Christian is not easy. But, if we keep our hearts tuned to the voice
of the Shepherd we will find the peaceful strength necessary
to live in and witness to Christ. We do need a shepherd, the
Divine Shepherd, to keep us on the correct life path, the way
that leads through Him to the Father. The heart of the Father
is the only pasture where our lives find hope, our tired souls
find rest, and our goodness is celebrated and honored. Today,
Jesus reminds us that “I am the good shepherd, and I know
mine and mine know me.” In knowing us, He discerns what is
best for us. May our faith lead us to hear His voice and to
deepen our knowledge that because we belong to Christ we
are blessed beyond imagination. This is our Good News for
today.
On another note…tickets for the Parish Raffle will be available today in the Church plaza. Please be generous in selling as
many books as possible. The proceeds will benefit the ministry that our parish does for the Lord.
The parish pastoral offices have moved from the modular
building to a new space created in the former school building.
While most of the major items like furniture and files are in
place, other items are still being put into place. The renovation is modest, but the parish has a better facility from which
to engage in the ministry of the Lord. The entrance to the new
Parish Office is through the single red door, under the canopy,
closest to Pine Street and facing the Church. Thank you to so
many who supported this much needed project. The parish
mailing address and telephone number will stay the same as it
is presently.
Lastly, thank you for being a great parish. Have a blessed
week in the Lord.
En que nos invita a poner nuestra fe en Él, Jesús reconoce que
hay y habrá muchos obstáculos para vivir nuestra fe. De las
fuerzas hostiles dentro de nuestra sociedad, a la familia y amigos que cuestionamos lo que creemos, muchos obstáculos se
pondrán en el camino de la vida que puede nublar fácilmente
nuestra capacidad de oír la voz del Pastor. Al oír la voz del Pastor nos asegura que en su presencia se nos cuidado y protegido.
Viviendo nuestra fe nunca es fácil, ya que esto era actual
productores cada vez más muchos desafíos a lo que creemos.
Ser un fiel cristiano no es fácil. Pero, si guardamos nuestro corazón en sintonía con la voz del Pastor vamos a encontrar la
fuerza de paz necesario para vivir y testimoniar a Cristo. Nosotros necesitamos un pastor, el Divino Pastor, para mantenernos en el camino de vida correcto, el camino que conduce
a través de Él al Padre. El corazón del Padre es el único pastor
donde nuestras vidas van a encontrar la esperanza, nuestras
almas cansadas encuentran descanso y nuestra bondad es celebrada y honrada. Hoy, Jesús nos recuerda que "Yo soy el buen
pastor, y conozco la mía y las mías me conocen." En lo
sepamos, él discierne lo que es mejor para nosotros. Que nuestra fe nos lleva a escuchar Su voz y profundizar en el conocimiento de que porque pertenecemos a Cristo somos bendecidos
más allá de la imaginación. Esta es la Buena Noticia para hoy.
En otra nota ... boletos para la rifa de la parroquia estarán disponibles hoy en día en la plaza de la Iglesia. Por favor, sean
generosos en la venta de tantos libros como sea posible. Los
ingresos beneficiarán el ministerio que nuestra parroquia hace
para el Señor.
Las oficinas pastorales parroquiales se han trasladado desde el
edificio modular para un nuevo espacio creado en el antiguo
edificio de la escuela. Si bien la mayoría de los principales artículos como muebles y archivos están en su lugar, otros elementos se siguen ponen en su lugar. La renovación es modesto,
pero la parroquia tiene una mejor facilidad de la que para participar en el ministerio del Señor. La entrada a la nueva oficina
de la parroquia es a través de la única puerta roja, bajo el dosel,
más cerca de Pine Street y frente a la Iglesia. Gracias a tantos
que apoyó este proyecto tan necesario. La dirección postal de la
parroquia y número de teléfono será la misma, ya que es en la
actualidad.

Treasures from our Tradition
Many of our customs surrounding critical illness come from antiquity, and yet attitudes have certainly changed. Death
was an all too-familiar presence then, and people tended to see it as a natural and unavoidable part of life, not a personal catastrophe. People tried to review their lives, settle their affairs, say farewell to their dear ones, and welcome the
deathbed vigils and prayers that assured them of God’s love and forgiveness. What people most feared was sudden
death. It was dreaded and never discussed.
The faithful filled the catacombs with consoling images of the good shepherd carrying the sheep to safe pasture, or
the faithful in glory seated at banquet tables. The prayer texts from the time are consoling and positive, and many inspired our modern prayers. The care of the dying flowed directly from Roman pagan practice; it was home based and
family centered. Pagans didn’t especially fear death, but they were terrified by the dead. Christians, on the other hand,
consoled their sick with psalms of joy and faith in the Resurrection. The goal was to assure the sick person of God’s
love, and that the ties that bind the dead and the living would endure.

Living God’s Word
GOD’S WORD TODAY
What does it mean to
gather together in the
name of Jesus? Today’s
scriptures give us a hint.
Saint Peter tells us that it
was in the name of Jesus
that the crippled man
was healed. The psalm
reminds us that Jesus is
the stone rejected by the builders that has become
the cornerstone. And Jesus himself reminds us in
today’s Gospel that he is the good shepherd who
lays down his life for the sheep. So today we gather
in the name of the one who is healer, a rejected
stone that became the cornerstone, a good shepherd,
and ultimately the one who laid down his own life
to save us from our sins. Let us absorb the richness
of the Lord Jesus made present in the proclamation
of today’s readings.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD
This Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally referred to as “Good
Shepherd Sunday.” Today we listen to the words of the Lord as
he refers to himself as the “good shepherd who lays down his life
for the sheep.” It is sometimes so difficult for us to grasp the reality that anyone would lay down his or her own life for the sake of
someone else. This is especially true in a society that places high
value on power and personal advancement, often at the cost of
“trampling” on other people in order to climb the ladder. Today’s
scriptures point to the one we are called to emulate—the one who
lays down his life for his sheep. Today’s scriptures challenge us
to discover ways to bring life to those around us—to build up rather than to tear down.

Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe
Imágenes antiguas de Cristo lo mostraban como un pastor joven cargando una ovejita en sus hombros. Él mismo se presenta como el buen Pastor (Juan 10:11). Esta imagen que nos conforta con el amor de Cristo, es en realidad una imagen
radical. Hay que saber dos cosas sobre el pastor palestino de aquella época: 1) los pastores eran considerados sucios,
peligrosos y ladrones, y 2) cuando cargaban una ovejita era porque ellos mismos le habían quebrado la pierna.
¿Porque Jesús se describe como uno de ellos? Jesús ve más allá de las apariencias y los estereotipos, y se asocia con
aquellas personas que la sociedad de su tiempo odiaba y marginaba. Por voluntad propia decide estar entre los pobres y
despreciados. Si Jesús viniera a la tierra en nuestro tiempo, se describiría a sí mismo como el buen inmigrante.
En cuanto a la ovejita sobre el hombre: en casos extremos, de ovejas rebeldes que se alejaban del rebaño, los pastores tenían que quebrarles la pierna para cargarlas sobre los hombros. De esta manera las amansaban para que no se alejaran de él. Dios no hace esto en nosotros, pero tampoco nos evita el sufrimiento. Antes bien, nos ayuda a llevarlo de manera heroica, como lo hizo con el santo Job.

LA PALABRA DE DIOS HOY
Vivamos la Palabra
¿Qué significa reunirnos
en nombre de Jesús? Las
Escrituras de hoy nos dan
una pista. San Pedro nos
dice que fue en nombre
de Jesús que el paralítico
fue curado. El salmo nos
recuerda que Jesús es la
piedra que desecharon los
constructores y que es ahora la piedra angular. Y el
mismo Jesús nos recuerda en el Evangelio de hoy
que él es el buen pastor que da la vida por sus
ovejas. Así es que hoy nos reunimos en el nombre de
aquel que cura, que es la piedra fundamental, el buen
pastor y finalmente el que ha dado la vida para
salvarnos de nuestros pecados. Absorbamos toda la
riqueza del Señor Jesús, que se ha hecho presente en
la proclamación de las lecturas de hoy.
La piedra que desecharon los arquitectos, es ahora la piedra angular.

El Padre ama a Jesús, el Buen Pastor, que da la vida por sus ovejas.

EN BUEN PASTOR
El Cuarto Domingo de Pascua tradicionalmente se conoce como
el “Domingo del Buen Pastor”. Hoy escuchamos las palabras
del Señor cuando se llama a sí mismo “el buen pastor que da la
vida por sus ovejas.” A veces es tan difícil para nosotros comprender la realidad de que alguien esté dispuesto a dar su vida
por alguien. Esto es muy cierto en una sociedad que pone tanto
énfasis en el poder y en el avance social, con frecuencia a expensas de “pisotear” a otra gente para escalar a la cima. Las Escrituras de hoy nos muestran a quién debemos imitar –al que da
su vida por las ovejas. Las Escrituras de hoy nos retan a descubrir la manera de llevar vida a los que están a nuestro alrededor
–a construir y no a destruir.

BIBLE STUDY ON PRAYER

Prayer is an important aspect of our faith lives. Without prayer
and the sacraments we are not equipped to live as Christ
instructs us. Beginning Thursday, April 30 we will begin a
six week Bible Study on Prayer.
These classes, offered at St. Peter Chanel in Hawaiian Gardens
and given over a 10-Week period, will greatly intensify your spiritual life and your desire to go to Heaven. Come and learn the real
purpose of your life, and how to achieve it through selfknowledge, self-discipline, deep prayer, and discernment of spirits. You’ll see miracles happen in your life!
